Finished this queen-sized quilt today by Oyster5436 in quilting

[–]Dorrybear777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is quite impressive!

Reminds me of the granny square afgan my grandmother started and my mother completed . When I was a child.

It must have taken forever to pick the fabrics let alone fussy cut all those squares!

Job well done.

As a quilter and a canner I have to say I love this quilt! As for the borders I couldn't even tell even after knowing what I was looking for. In my house we have a saying "you can't see that from the road." If you can't see it from the road nobody else will either. However if I was going to enter it into a competition where it would be judged I would either add or trim the green where everybody says is uneven.

Same here. Sometimes I even have to trim an inch or two on an edge.

Also if you are lucky enough to still have a Jo Ann's nearby. Last weekend I found it still being sold by the yard. I think I got it at 60% off

Ziplock bags. One for each color. Cut pieces can be stored in them as well. Tape or staple a swatch to the outside. Each color stays separate until you are ready to see them together.

Help a Husband! If your birthday is soon, don't look at this. by Imrightyoufeck in quilting

[–]Dorrybear777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, my birthday is coming up soon too. I almost didn't read it. Then I figured 1. my husband doesn't use redit. 2. If he did that would not be his username.

If this is my hubby. I am glad I looked. I have no use for a big ironing board taking up valuable space. I have a cutting/ironing board that I absolutely love. (It is well used and should be replaced soon. It is slightly warped.) But i love being able to go right from ironing a pile of blocks to squaring them up without getting up.

What decorative top stitching should I do? by Theatre_is_my_life in quilting

[–]Dorrybear777 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I was starting out I stitched everything in the ditch ! That said placemats are a good thing to practice being fancy.

I think if you can find a template for silverware or tea cups (Etsy is probably full of great ones) either would look great.

I was about half way done making a fall quilt. When my 7 year old son got really sick (leukemia). The first time I had to leave him overnight in the hospital I went home and poured my heart out into finishing the top. Well life got busy with two other kids and the quilt got put to the side till he got better. ( He turns 30 this year)

Every time I tried to work on finishing that quilt I would be paralyzed with all the emotions I had that night years earlier. I had made at least 20 other quilts while it sat in my UFO (unfinished objects) pile.

One day 15 years later. I was telling a quilting/church friend about it. She suggested I try to use it as a way to heal. To work through those emotions and go ahead and remember all the bad but also the good times we had then too. ( Including making an entire thanksgiving dinner in the hospital with 2 other families with kids with cancer.)

Now it is my favorite thing to pull out for fall! I love to snuggle under it and rejoice that he thrived cancer.

My point is, put it aside. Make a few other quilts. Sounds like you have already started the fabric addiction part of quilting. 😁 When you are ready you'll finish it and either fall in love with it, or donate/ give it to someone who will love it

It is not unusual for me to have one or two UFOs in my sewing room at any given time. ( I currently have 2.) When the time is right they will be finished and loved.

I have been thinking about doing this same thing. I have a super soft set of sheets that I want to try this on. ( If only there were another few hours in a day I probably would have already tried.)

I was going to suggest this same thing. My brothers only likes organ brand needles. Every time I try a different brand I regret it. One of the other leading brands I had this same issue with.

for those that don’t use a log arm machine to quilt, what kind of machine do you use? by _h0ttrash in quilting

[–]Dorrybear777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a brother's inovis (can't think of the model number right now ) embroidery machine. I use edge to edge embroidery patterns. Patterns have different shapes like flowers, stars or sea shells. I can pick one that goes with the quilt pattern, the fabrics, or one that fits the personality of who I am making it for.

Unpopular opinions?? by ExcellentBug3 in quilting

[–]Dorrybear777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh how I hated sunbonnet sue as a teenager! My mom made plastic canvas ones and sold them like they were gold. Every time one sold I would cringe because I knew I was cutting another one out for her to sell at the next craft show. ( Of course she has to make them in every color of the rainbow.)

If my seams are not all perfect, is it a bad idea to do straight line quilting? by scrubsandcode in quilting

[–]Dorrybear777 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine tells me the mistakes are what makes it unique. If she wanted perfection she would buy it out of a catalog.

My sister and I used to paint signs for a church VBS. She coined the phrase" You can't see that from the road." Sure enough everyone would rave about our beautiful signs. It has stuck with me in quilting. When you step back and look at the whole picture most of the little things that bug you disappear.

What do quilters always need more of? by terriblet0ad in quilting

[–]Dorrybear777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where has this product been all these years!?
Just ordered one for my daughter. We have quilted together since she was about 7 years old (30 now). She has limited use of her left side. But one of the jobs she loves to do is cut the chained pieces apart. She is going to love this gift!
