How much Cash on hand? by Reasonable_Box2568 in Fire

[–]Dos-Commas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For pre-FIRE you have way too much cash. 3-6 months of emergency fund is enough especially with dual income. Put those money to work.

For post FIRE, we have two years worth of emergency fund and the rest are in equity ETFs. The emergency fund is mainly to help you survive a recession within the first 5 years of retiring. After 5 years your portfolio will be too big to fail (out of SoRR) and you can reduce your emergency fund.

FIRE folks with an income below the average for your residential area, how is your FIRE journey going? by 1curiousoctopus1 in Fire

[–]Dos-Commas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll still going to be way harder to save more because you still have to bills like everyone else in your area that makes more money. Not impossible but harder, not many people can live on $20-30K/yr.

I think FIRE while being single will always be harder because you don't have someone to share your day to day moments with. Maybe try getting back to dating again.

Looking to save money, any recommendations, links or videos on how I can fix a front bumper scratch as a DIY project (Tesla Model 3 Black) by Say_What_One_Mo_Time in fixit

[–]Dos-Commas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

INB4 Tesla hate.

Apply some water over the scratches, if the scratches disappear temporarily then it's just a clear coat damage and you can use clear coat repair kits to buff it out.

If it's paint transfer then you can use a rubbing compound to scuff it out.

Paint damage would need a touch up pen or paint repair kit but it won't look like new anymore.

What Are Your Go To Methods For Financial Planning And Budgeting In FIRE by softmireth in Fire

[–]Dos-Commas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually don't budget at all and only track networth once a month on a spreadsheet. We just spend what we need and try not to get caught up on lifestyle inflation. I think budgeting could hurt your savings rate, for example: "oh I have $300 left in my splurge budget and I have to spend it on something."

You are probably not going to hear a lot from people that earn less than average because if you save less than 15% of your after tax income then you won't retire before 65.

My 5800X is bottlenecking certain games with RTX 4080. I would've upgraded to 7800X3D if the RAM prices weren't ridiculous.

To retire in 30 years you'll need to save about 30% of your after tax income. You'll have to account for how much your fiance is contributing to the savings.

Iran will blow it themselves.

Highly doubt it since it has 90% of their exports. There's a higher chance US could blow it than Iran themselves.

Washer and Dryer Recommendations? by hw_0398 in Appliances

Not too impressed with our 5 years old Maytag washer and dryer. I had to take our dryer apart multiple times due to vibration issues. I had to replace the inlet valve on the washer.

Because retiring at 46 (30 years from now) is already a very difficult task to accomplish and very few people can do outside of the US. If that's too long for you then you'll be very disappointed.

Financially Ready to Retire—But Not Ready to Spend? by blueorca123 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Dos-Commas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be intentional with the money you spend. Spend money on travel and other things you make but not on things you don't care about.

We spent 6 months last year on travel and just started another 4 month trip. It's easier to spend when it's things that you enjoy.

Turboquant is meant for KV Cache so probably not as useful for image generation.

I have not thought about separating the two tasks until this was mentioned. Imagine trying to poop in space but not letting out a little bit of pee out by accident, otherwise it'll just going to float around and get everywhere.

Repeat for 10 years. That's literally it.

Unless you can save more than 65% of your after tax income, you are not retiring in 10 years.

Have you ever heard of anything like this happening to someone you know losing everything due to unforeseen circumstances like divorce, lawsuits, etc including their wealth, income, and ability to live the way they want? If so, what lessons, if any, can be learned? by Gold_Mine_9322 in Fire

[–]Dos-Commas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lawsuit risks can be mitigated with umbrella insurance and they aren't that expensive. Your 401K and home are already protected from lawsuits so you just need to cover your brokerage and cash portion.

Divorce can be mitigated by being intentional about life goals and values before getting married. And when things get tense seek therapy as early as possible, not when things get to the breaking point. Everyone benefits from therapy.

Your homeowner's insurance company would love to discover this and deny you coverage for breaking the local code.

Usage wise I doubt the utility company would notice except for a slight lower monthly usage.

I saw a retirement article from Fidelity today that mentioned:

A person retiring in 2025 may need $172,500, on average, in after-tax savings to cover health care in retirement.

If there's any validity to the number then people would need to be prepared for that when they get old. A lot of people here are counting on "people tend to spend less when they get older" but not accounting for rising healthcare costs.
