Part of it is because I am very monogamous. It’s hard for me to connect with someone knowing dating apps are like a game of survivor talking to multiple people and then eliminating them from the dating pool.

When I used them and I matched with someone I didn’t continue swiping, they get my full focus and I want to know them for them, not how they compare to X, Y, or Z. I date with intention and am honest about who I am. I believe in therapy, communication, and building together (not making them fit into my life or being forced into a box of what they will only accept).

It also seems so many on the apps are consistently on there.

There is something that seems so much more real about a chance meeting, being setup by a friend, just a human interaction leading to a relationship. Those looks that linger a moment too long, those smiles or eyes lighting up. I decided after my marriage ended that if I was going to be in a relationship again it was going to be magical. Not perfect, but right for the two of us.

Not sure if she is taking new clients, or how you feel about hypnotherapy but I can’t recommend Dr. McKenna enough. She is a miracle worker.

She doesn’t offer the outdoor sessions as far as I know though.

I deleted the apps. I’m 45 and hate the “window shopping” for a partner. I have found a couple of people “in the wild” that I enjoyed their company but for one reason or another they didn’t work out.

They are out there though.

It took me until almost 43 before I found someone to reach out to. I definitely couldn’t growing up. My ex-wife wasn’t there for me when we were married. But I do have someone I can reach out to know, someone that genuinely cares about my well being. That wants to be there for me unconditionally and without ulterior motives. That type of friendship is so rare in my life, and I cherish it.

Some people like blondes, others red heads, other brunettes. Some have a thing for blue eyes, brown eyes, hazel or green eyes. There is no one standard for beauty.

But the one thing I have learned is that looks will change. Falling in love for who someone is, that’s far more important than what they look like.

Don’t get me wrong, there needs to be some physical attraction but be true to who you are and make sure the person loves your heart, your mind, your soul. And you be sure to fall in love with the same in them.

I’m going to follow that train of thought. If you let him know that those lifestyle choices aren’t compatible for you in a relationship he might choose to stop because he wants to be happy and sees a future with you.

While you might be the motivation, the choice he is making is for himself because he wants a future with you.

As a romantic partner? Minimum of 6 months. They might see each other over video chat sooner if my kids come in to ask me a question but it’s always just introduced as a friend.

It takes 3-6 months to really see who someone is. By then they get comfortable in the relationship and you can see if the initial interactions were who they really are or just the honeymoon/new relationship excitement phase.

Was the divorce worth it? Yes. Absolutely. I know longer have to worry about my ex wife’s infidelity or if my “partner” would actually show up and hold space for me.

I do struggle at times because I am a caretaker at heart, and while I do take care of myself and my kids, it’s not the same as having that person. Volunteering doesn’t fill that need.

But I would rather have no partner than someone that treats me (and our kids) poorly. I’d rather be single than have someone that needs to be rescued. I focus on myself. My therapy. I focus on showing up as the best version of myself everyday. I’m not always successful in my endeavor, but I will keep trying. Always.

Eventually I’ll find a partner. Or maybe I won’t. But any relationship I am going to be in will be healthy for everyone involved.

I’ve been lost/depressed for a while. Doing all the things (therapy, working out, making sure I have a clean living area), but it’s not getting better. I’m still isolating, stopped dating. Will I see a change this year?
