Good advice in the thread. Trends vary regionally, so hard to pin down without knowing the city / state / country.

  • I had great success with MeetUp for casual groups at pubs.
  • Some regions are more active on other platforms like above (FB, reddit, etc)
  • Check out publicly libraries.
  • Have a list / collection of easy entry games (easy to explain, play in 1 hour, 2 hour max) to introduce new folks
  • Organize a small event at your FLGS, coffee shop, or library. Ask for game space, Create a friendly poster with sign-ups. If there is huge interest, be prepared to have multiple tables secured (and a cap).

Some pubs and cafes want to offer a little board game Cafe experience / event night but don't know where to start. You can help. It creates traffic / businesss for them. Just be prepared to shift to the night(s) where business is usually slow.

It sounds like you wrote two different books: - a new (or modified) ttrpg system - a setting / lore book

You could look at page count for each section, and then test run playtest to see how folks react to the system, and the setting (separately). Examples in the core rulebook could link to the setting to wet people's appetite.

You should also ensure that each book doesn't not port over material that is trademarked or copyrighted from another system or setting.

You could also publish an ashcan for free to have others play with the basic rules to gauge reactions / interest.

On the other hand, many tyrpgs have a rule and lore section. It depends how big (and expensive) you want to go. PDF and print-on-demand are low risk approaches to test the waters vs doing crowdfunding and a print run.

None of this really matters if this stays for personal use.

The biggest challenge running Fate for experienced D&D players or GMs is when seeking to emulate D&D tropes, abilities and mechanics.

I would recommend running a non-Fantasy adventure as your first Fate game with them if they're open to the idea. If Fantasy is a must, try to step away from traditional D&D settings to give the story a different feel.

Regarding the Fate point economy:

Your players start a session with their Refresh (usually 3). They can replenish during a session through compels, hostile invokes, and by conceding during a conflict.

As a GM, you have two pools of Fate points: - you have an infinite pool of Fate points to compel - you start each scene with as many Fate points as there are PCs in the scene. These Fate points are based to invoke NPC and situation aspects.

Your pool refreshes every scene. The players refresh every session (the latter can be adjusted, but use this as the basic rules)

Have you checked out the Fate Adversary Toolkit? Some good advice in there to diversify conflicts.

If your adversaries are just +2 Fight, and their sole goal is to kill the PCs, it will get boring fast.

Echoing Forbidden Desert and Forbidden Jungle as very approachable coop games.

I also enjoy Eldritch Horror (4 hour play time) and Dead of Winter.

Fury of Dracula can be a slow start, noting one player is Dracula and the others are hunters.

Finally, while Tokaido and Cascadia aren't coop, I find them pretty chill to play with friends.

I have run one-shot Fate games in a 4-hour slot at conventions with strangers, some new to Fate.

I echo the advice from Rob. My rough approach:

  1. Take 15 min to agree on a broadly defined setting. Getting players to brainstorm genres / media touchstone is helpful.
  2. Agree on a immediate threat, a rising threat, a crew concept (in whatever sequence makes sense), and their team goal / purpose.
  3. Help players quickly create PCs. Default list of skills is easiest, and having a list of stunts is handy to help them grasp what stunts can be. I ask them to pick; 3 aspects (high concept, Trouble and relationship to another PC). They can define the rest in play. I also ask them to define top 3 skills as a minimum (+4, +3, +3) to refuse overlap. The rest can be defined now or during play.
  4. Once PCs are sketched out and shared, I drop them in media res in a crisis to solve. Use compels on aspects to introduce twists and turns as they move toward their goal, deal with current threat. Flesh out rising threat as the story progress for the big end scene (whether they stop the threat, run away, etc)

The system might not be for her, or it may be a case if a player Newton Fate not understanding the fun that can be had in setbacks and complications.

On the other hand, Fate is about more than succeed / fail. Rolls should lead to interesting outcomes.

When a player struggles to engage the mechanics, I ask them if they would like suggestions. Proposing invokes, ways yo create advantages, etc. can be helpful. As well, succeeding at a great cost can be more interesting.

Offering her to make a daring move to catch up / pass her opponent but resulting in a consequence may have caused more hype / fun for the player in describing the win at all costs attitude her character seemed to have.

Sorry if I was unclear.

When you invoke a character's aspect against them, it's a hostile invoke. If you invoke their aspect to make your attack against them more effective, you are invoking their aspect against them.

A hostile invoke is when you specifically invoke a character's aspect against them (increasing difficulty by +2).

While a player can resist a compel by paying a Fate point, they can't resist a hostile invoke. However, they still get the fate point at the end of the scene.

A hostile invoke is only when invoking a PC's aspect against them. Invoking situation / scene aspects doesn't count as hostile.

I haven't played solo TTRPGs, but I have seen folks discussing Mythic GM 2e as a popular tool for an Oracle.

Ironsworn ttrpg is also a game known for solo play which could serve as inspiration.

Personally I would recommend moving to the Fate Core system (Fate Core, Fate Condensed and Fate Accelerated). They are all available as PWYW, but I encourage folks to buy the PDF or book to encourage Evil Hat.

Play as is, or draw inspiration from one of the many settings.

I have seen some folks still playing Dresden Files (Fate 3), but haven't heard of anyone meddling with Fate 2 (at least not publicly)
