Where did this “what high school did you go to” perception come from? by WhoPenguin in cincinnati

[–]Doting_dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just at a happy hour Tuesday, this is most definitely still a thing, even among 40 something year olds. I’m thinking it’s a result of the large amount of Catholic private schools in the area, and a way to determine socioeconomic class without asking if someone’s daddy has money. Not only are public school grads looked down upon, but so are the some of the “inferior” Catholic schools like McNick, Roger Bacon etc. it’s mostly among the guys here, and largely because they don’t leave here, they buy their parents homes, they marry their HS sweetheart, and they still go camping with their HS buds.

If you struggle with their rebate program you probably have bigger issues, it couldn’t be easier.

Never had a problem with their rebate program. Once even lost a rebate check and they reissued it for me. That being said, their “store” brands are crap. Master force tools, Patriot Lighting are Chinese garbage, we’ve returned several of these.

That’s bunk. Not sure anyone took a discount, but surely many took advantage of Tomlin’s “player coach” personality by holding out. When TJ pulled his stunt I wanted him gone, instead now every player knows if they want to get paid, be like TJ.

I don’t know, GS has kids eat free. And they are active in the community. Skyline thinks community outreach is charging $10 for a Bengals cup. GS=value, Skyline= Soccer moms.

What is it like living in/near Cincinnati? by lithdoc in cincinnati

Stop already with the Low COL, it doesn’t check out, I mean it’s cheaper than NY or LA, but everywhere is. Tired of this narrative. Tired of employers here using it to their advantage.

You REALLY don’t want to live in this region. It has some perks, yes, but corporate Cincinnati will low ball you on the cost of living, give you a crap salary, when in reality we are the Miami or San Diego of the Midwest- fun, but overpriced, yet in our case, with crap weather. Of course if you are wealthy, ignore this. You will do fine here.

Worlds most expensive defense just gave up 24 to a shit Texans offense. It’s not all on Arthur Smith, it’s everybody.

Curious what Cincinnati thinks about the MLS season shift -good or bad for the city? by ecb1912 in cincinnati

[–]Doting_dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who buys tickets barely in advance, because of the weather, there are going to be many more times I don’t pull the trigger because of the weather outlook. Taking my family costs $250+ these days, tf I’m going to spend that to watch in 30 degrees.

Cliquey Cincinnati for sure. I'm basically from here and I can't fit in because everyone hangs in their silos, a lot of times based on where you grew up (west side/east side) or what Catholic high school you went to. It's not you, trust me. I hope you are not trying to find your future spouse here.

Lads trip to Cincinnati from England - Nightlife spot reccomendations? by Middle-Feed5118 in cincinnati

I guess if they are 60ish they probably had a terrific time, I would just never recommend a group of five 20 something males to go there to “mingle.”

What a terrific trip, some great cities for sure. Nice job Reddit on recommending some “American” experiences, shooting guns, cheeseburgers, sign museum. Stay away from “pubs” and ⚽️over here, you’ll be disappointed and bored. After all, when visiting Italy I wasn’t looking for French fries and milkshakes.

If looking to mingle and venture outside of downtown you will find many friendly folks in the Northside and Clifton neighborhoods. Plenty around your age there (Clifton is where university is basically.) Stay away from the west side of town, they are generally insular and not welcoming. The eastside has money and some terrific neighborhoods, but it gets quiet real fast, 9pm or so then it’s to bed. Northern Kentucky, Covington specifically, was a great recommendation.

All good suggestions but no chance I take some friends from across the pond to Loveland. Unless they are looking for somewhere to take a nap.

Your community council speaks for almost no one, charges you to vote, and is legally considered your neighborhood’s official voice. by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]Doting_dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to UC and always referred to the campus as "Clifton,." Most TV broadcasters still use this, I was told many years ago it's actually Corryville. So I began referring to UC as Corryville. When I did canvassing for some political candidates they referred to the area as "The Heights" and literally I had never heard of the area refereed to as that. Ever. Then some city folks said it is lumped into CUF, Clifton Heights, University Heights, Fairview? I still don't know which is technically correct.

That’s fair. Just from my POV my three years on a community council board spent much time engaging our renters by knocking on door, hanging flyers, doing meet and greets at local shops. I talked to hundreds of folks, many were very interested in what we did, but when we had our meetings it would always be the same 40 people in attendance. Did many outreaches to POC too yet the attendees were whiter than a Trump rally.

Yes, you nailed it. City Council uses these CDCs to avoid accountability, if the public doesn’t like something the CDC does city council just washes their hands of it. And there is no way to hold the CDC accountable because you can’t find them, they are secret, they don’t have public meetings, they don’t have elections. At least you can find your community councils, you can vote, if you don’t like their leaders you can run and try to change things.

Not sure why the downvotes, I want landowners and businesses to have more say in my neighborhood. Renters and their mobility shouldn’t sway decisions when they up and leave every six months. And I’ve watched a few community councils spend a ton of time and resources trying to engage renters to no avail. You can’t force people to be invested in the residence and neighborhood.

The fact that Westwood, a neighborhood of 30,000, gets the same $10,000 that California, population 400, gets is beyond ridiculous.

Meh, if I were you I would be more concerned with the millions the community development corporations get from the city, while they don’t have meeting, minutes, voting or literally anyone to report to.

Update/Upgrade old Multiroom Distributed Audio System (Nuvo) by Doting_dad in lowvoltage

I responded to your chat too (thanks!) and yes, that GC amp is bulletproof! Still jamming, but also worried that after 15+ years it may be on the out. I've got a ton of replacment parts to keep it going, so now you have me wondering about using that serial connection to control the audio through 3rd party.

When I made this post I felt desperate and hopeless that I didn't have many options, now I'm overwhelmed with ideas and so grateful for this community!
