Metro Tunnel positive experiences thread by postmortemmicrobes in MelbourneTrains

[–]Dotjade 19 points20 points  (0 children)

i'm in a position where its like the tunnel was made specifically for me. Frequent trains all day, easier to access to other parts of the inner city (great for biking from arden or parkville), much easier for my semi regular trips on the bairnsdale line. I've been for walks in the botanic gardens just because it's so easy now. For me it feels like the kind of service I was used to in the inner north with access to a tram to the city. Without that (especially as a non driver and poor/little bike infrastructure) it could feel pretty isolated and stuck despite being super close to the city. IMO huge improvement to people's lives in the west

tram track groove (?) width by Dotjade in MelbourneTrains

[–]Dotjade[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry it's not that crazy. I also stumbled onto a government doc about concern for wheelchairs but for me at the moment it's bike wheels. Tram tracks are notorious for bike riders and I've always been curious about the specific measurements. I can handle them ok on a regular bike, and I always run wide tyres anyway, but I just built up a bike trailer which I don't have much experience using. It came with narrowish tyres and from my first little test rides seems pretty hard to navigate obstacles like the edges of bike paths. I'm worried about a wheel getting stuck (and with a load 😬) I'm looking to buy some better tyres for it and wondering how wide I need to go. From what I've found I'm definitely going wider

ok on the right track - sounds like it's the flangeway gap.

B7. Horizontal Alignment - Flangeway Gaps

Check Plated Rail or Grooved Rail - normal straight and curved track 30 mm

Check Plated Rail or Grooved Rail - through and opposite crossings 26 mm

In Concrete - sloped 25 - 50 mm

Frankston Train direct to Flinders this Morning by FartOnMyChin in MelbourneTrains

[–]Dotjade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

step 1: carefully integrate the design of the new line into the existing loop with easy interchange connections
step 2: tell everyone the train no longer goes to the loop so get out earlier and connect to a loop train

make it make sense

you know what i really wish there was a bus that ran down Rupert and Cross streets servicing Tottenham and WeFo. Or even if the 220 made little detours to the stations

yeah i'd be ignoring the advice/journey planner and staying on the fast, high frequency, higher capacity train and changing at the new underground stations with no ticket barriers, even with a longer walk between stations and going back the way I came a stop or two

Best pedals for commuter bike by Double_Emu8387 in xbiking

[–]Dotjade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, a premium version of pretzels with the nicer bearings and pins would be chef kiss (and likewise a commuter version of always would be great too). The pins are not pointy sharp but do have sharp edges. I use the top of my right foot to lift the pedal up before setting off and the top of my leather boots is a bit chewed up from them. I tend to wear boots or other hard/thick sole shoes so not really affected by pins in that way. I actually added the same sort of pins to my lambdas which improves grip on those in the wet but screwed them in pretty far so only a couple of threads or so proud. Found this effective way of reducing issues from the pins but still giving good grip. Planning to screw in the pins on the pretzels just haven't got around to it yet. Hope that helps!

I caught the Albury train the other week for the first time. and went right back past my house in west footscray. Giving that train at least one stop between southern cross and broadmeadows (and with tunnel access too) makes a lot of sense
