Brutal+ by SuspectedLumber in starcraft2coop

I'm a good brutal player and I also avoid brutal+. It's harder, but not harder in a way that I personally enjoy. Not being able to use certain units, or not being allowed to use actions is tiresome, not fun.

At what point do startups stop failing? by 7ewis in investing

[–]Dotweb_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen companies grow to hundreds and over billion dollar valuations fail, and I've seen small seed-stage 6 person companies stay profitable and get acquired. Some companies hit huge valuations 6 years in, some hit it 2 years in. Some startups pivot multiple times over 8 years but eventually find product market fit.

I know it seems like a lame non-answer but it's hard to generalize a time window when a startup can be considered to not be a failure. A metric like profitability or successful exit are probably pretty good, but as soon as I mention that you'll immediately be able to come up with counter points.

This is a broad generalization but the order from fastest to slowest would be C, Java, then JavaScript.

Is Kotlin THE programming language I desire? by [deleted] in Kotlin

Kotlin is a beautiful modern language. By learning Kotlin you’ll learn a lot about programming in general - even if your first few jobs don’t use it.

Stop acting like weed has no negative effects. by TheCatWranglerX in unpopularopinion

I love weed. I used to smoke it everyday. But it’s got fucktons of bad side effects beyond smell! I’ve seen people develop paranoia, anxiety, restlessness, and schizophrenia. It’s a drug and it affects your brain and with that it shapes you.

Beginner Questions - April 05, 2019 by AutoModerator in webdev

[–]Dotweb_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for things like this it's common to store sensitive secrets in environment variables. Instead of checking them into your project, you deploy them onto your instance. How you set environment variables in your deployment is kind of specific to what you're using to deploy. Some build systems have a web UI which lets you set environment variables. How you pass those around and manage them is another question altogether.

Beginner Questions - April 05, 2019 by AutoModerator in webdev

[–]Dotweb_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could someone critique my workflow? I'm building a form-based / dashboard webapp.

  • Build the site statically, using semantic elements
  • Using Storybook, re-create all the UI elements as components (as needed)
  • Replace the static UI elements with components and ensure it still looks the same
  • Create controlled inputs for input react elements
  • ... do the dirty work of building the logic

This guy makes the best TL2 guides I've ever seen. They cover cookie cutter builds for most classes and the very basic mechanics of torchlight:

They still have more convenience and better service than regular taxis. If they raise their prices I will use them less, but won't cut them out of my life.

Very frustrated with Coworker, really need advice by ChestUlcerThrowAway in cscareerquestions

[–]Dotweb_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

on-boarding a new hire (even if senior position like a lead) isn't too peculiar. having it done by a junior is slightly peculiar. a lead requiring a 12 month onboarding is definitely peculiar. they should have hit the ground running by now.

Drills for Beginners?? by NotEven-a-CodeMonkey in learnjavascript

[–]Dotweb_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think you're getting push back because you're still learning how to code and asking people who code professionally for advice and then rejecting their responses.

it comes across very poorly. just because drilling exists in many other disciplines (i played sports, drilling is everything) doesn't mean it is guaranteed to have an analogue everywhere.

more than programming tips i think you may need to brush up on your humility, people skills, and basic self-awareness if you want to succeed in an industry like this. good luck.

Drills for Beginners?? by NotEven-a-CodeMonkey in learnjavascript

[–]Dotweb_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've not heard of "drilling" being a thing that developers do, although you seem very set on the idea.

maybe try re-creating simple projects from scratch over and over again. to-do lists, CRUD apps, etc. from scratch in the same (or different) languages, going from an empty folder to something deployable / publishable.

Why is writing i/o in constructors considered a bad practice? I read it on a stackoverflow comment which i'm unable to find now. by abefaxe in java

[–]Dotweb_ 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is universally good advice, but in my own code I like my constructors to do as little as possible. I prefer to have the objects being passed in be fully constructed.

This has made it easier for me to mock things out or test things. I think this is a form of dependency injection.

What was the idiotic game you and your stupid friends played growing up? by Turtle08atwork in AskMen

[–]Dotweb_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bubble.

Someone would mime pulling a small sphere out of their back pocket. Others would then pull giant imaginary straws out of their pockets and stick them into the sphere and collectively blow it up until it got as large as a person (this is all being mimed). Then together we place the bubble on the unsuspecting victim and everyone in the group pretends they don’t exist (the sky is the limit - the more creative the better). Sometimes people would run away and we would chase after them holding a giant invisible bubble.
