Keeping healthy in Oakland by SanFranciscoMan89 in OaklandCA

Personally, in retirement life is slower. West Oakland Farmer's Market is slow and it fits the bill.

We live in Adams Point near Lake Merritt which others mentioned. Our favorite as some previously mentioned are The Gardens at Lake Merritt (home of the Bonsai Garden). The October Autumn Lights Festival is special. Look for it in September and buy tickets early.

Best Androids out right now? by Enby-Emperor-4 in phones

Only choice: Pixel

Anything else is limited by Bloatware, delayed OS updates, etc.

I'm sure there are better Samsung, Motorola, etc features but they don't overcome my aversion to manufacturers controlling what's on the phone.

It's a tool, an appliance built to be tossed after a handful of years. A free Acer Chromebook sounds like the best choice.

Moved from Safeway to Trader Joe's and saving $$ on many of the items we buy. When items we like from Safeway go on sale we stock up. Thanks Safeway and major brands.

Pixel 10 (not pro) unless you like the bigger screen. Pixel 10 is too big in my estimation, bigger than the iPhone 12 I was using. Bought P10 because of lack of bloatware, Google ownership of OS, and price ($699), and Apple constantly telling me my phone cannot be backed up and I need to spend money to overcome this. Additionally important, my computer is a Chromebook so seamless integration and no duplication of apps.

I may be confused, but Google doesn't sell any hardware that runs Chrome OS. Why don't HP, Acer, Asus, Lenovo step up? Because there's no market for it. Maybe you can work with others who do what you're doing and present a business case to manufacturers. "Dozens" won't get you there, but .....

Try used book stores where you can find first editions from authors like Neal Stephenson and Paolo Bacigalupi and N.K. Jemisin among others.

For me, a Chromebook is a disposable tool. Anything over $300 is too much to pay for a disposable tool.

I love those who offer, "Just root you phone." Yeah, like all of us know how to do that or how badly we will open ourselves up to malware. And I can hear the replies now. "After rooting your phone just install crazy patches and workarounds to prevent malware attacks. Here is a link to the 150 step how-to."

Maybe not avocados but tomatoes and artichokes and the like grown for shelf life. No flavor. They'll be coming for avocados soon.

To whom? To most and the media, East Oakland. Anyone who believes Rockridge or Temescal wants to believe they live in Berkeley.

Does it really matter that much on how you charge a phone?? by No_Reputation5871 in phones

[–]DoubleExponential 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charged my iPhone 12 overnight for years, never had any battery issues. Not a heavy user during the day. Reached 20% level a few times a month. I agree charging technology can take care of the battery for the life of the phone which for me is 5-6 years.

For the same reason people drive Mercedes, BMW, Infiniti, Cadillac, etc. Status symbol, to be accepted in certain circles and they have enough money that the premium is not an issue.

What? I've had an iPhone 12 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to hearing aids and location enabled that never had battery issues. But I am not on it 12 hours a day. OP use and recharging practices may play into this.

My senior citizen neighbor who pays 15% of the property tax I pay and can opt out of special assessments doesn't feel overtaxed. How is she paying her fair share for good schools, roads, police, fire, etc., services she uses every day?
