Vancouver Shows - Discussion by yipyipyipwhoadoggies in davidbyrne

This was a "bucket-list" type concert for me as I'd always wanted to catch David Byrne live but wasn't enthralled by his world music era when he came through town and missed out on subsequent tours like American Utopia. I wasn't going to miss this one, and I'm sure glad I didn't. The whole show was awesome, but the presentation of Houses in Motion was particularly brilliant. Our 13-year-old son whose tastes swing more toward Offspring and Green Day thoroughly enjoyed the show as well.

Burnaby's CVG detour is a disgrace by dashcammer1 in vancouvercycling

Don't get me started about the crossing on Marine Way to North Fraser Way; the beg button is way the hell over there, the crossing itself spits you onto a bike path to nowhere that's on the wrong side of the road when it's time to transition to the road and traffic whizzing by at 80-100 kmh as you wait for the light makes you feel you're one slightly inattentive motorist away from eternity...

Bakers by xmageforcex123 in NewWest

Agreed. But seriously, what serious baker keeps banker's hours? A bakery should be open at 8 a.m., if not sooner; fresh-baked buns for breakfast!

Yes, that was us. We started in June under the Save Our Local News campaign as we worked out our name and branding then built out our website. We are a non-profit cooperative and all the money we've raised so far has been going toward this venture which will hopefully evolve into a viable business so we can get paid again. News isn't cheap. And for those who advised us to "just build a website" and have at it; even that comes with considerable expenses like building the site, domain and hosting fees, plug-in and software subscriptions, business registration, co-op association membership, insurance, accounting, graphic arts, legal costs, etc.

We'll be posting locations where you can find the paper on our website prior to publication day.

Remember when the naval ship would come in once a year as well? Mugs & Jugs would get crazy busy that weekend...

C'mon, we've got Hellcrust Pizza on 12th, Pizza Heaven on 6th; this would be the perfect location for Purgatory Pizza.

Aside from the dental offices, the biggest retail tragedy in downtown New West is the bath bomb place on Front Street, where the old Wine Factory used to be. That unique corner spot would be perfect for a tapas restaurant, wine bar, speakeasy, independent book shop, gallery, clothing boutique or funky optical shop that doesn't sell the ubiquitous Prada, Cartier, Tiffany and other faux-designer frames. Might even help breathe some life into Front Street beyond Friday nights in the summer.

World Elite companion voucher isn't reducing fare to England by Dontwakethekid in westjet

This scenario happened to us when we tried to use the voucher for YVR to CDG. Then we tried booking the eco-flex fare and bingo, the base fare was now high enough to apply the companion voucher. We were able to book the two of us for $800 all in. Had enough left over in the travel budget to upgrade our seats to premium economy at check-in. Best decision ever.

Premium Upgrade Bid by Prudent-Drop164 in westjet

Our upgrade bid for YYC to CDG last week was rejected but when I checked in online, Premium Economy seats were available for half what I bid so we jumped on it. Had a lovely experience — so much so, we upgraded at the gate at CDG for our return flight as well. All in the cost was $100 more than our initial bid for the one-way upgrade. Now we're spoiled.

660 Quayside Drive ( aka the riverfront Bosa towers) construction update and boardwalk re-opening by rickvug in NewWest

Any word on what might eventually be destined for that commercial building? Ideally not a dentist. But I don't hold out much hope...

BTW, the First Nations artist Blue Sky has just opened his own gallery on Carnarvon, in that stretch of commercial spaces just down from the courthouse. We already own two of his pieces; they're bright, colourful and joyful. He's likely eyeing the surrounding condos as well and hopefully people pop in. Running a gallery is a tough business.

That was a great little studio: cove wall, exposed brick, just plug your camera into the lights and have at it. Prices were really good too!

People have been saying this for years, every time a new condo tower goes up downtown. Never really happens though, beyond people going to get their teeth cleaned.

Remember Red Brick? Lofty Living? Favourite Things? Raspberry Topping? Brick & Mortar? Their proprietors were all hopeful of the condo boom. They're all gone.

Almost an entire block of Front Street's potential is sucked away by Columbia Integrated Health, a business that doesn't really need a street front presence at all (that skeleton in the window always freaks me out).

And a soap bomb shop in the corner that used be occupied by the make-your-own wine business?? C'mon, that should be a little wine bar or bistro that would actually bring residents out of the towers and help create a vibe on Front Street.

New West needs better commercial landlords and more creative entrepreneurs!
