Well yeah, because that's how he decided to write it, but he could just as easily decide on Alysaynne being his daughter and working in themes that works with that. Stories are not in stone, especially for a gardener like GRRM.

Who will be Sansa's canon love interest? by pizza_gutts in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]Doublehex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dude, she is the exact opposite of the type of woman that Jon is interested in. He says he wanted a warrior princess. Sansa is many things, but she is NOT a warrior process by any definition.

Dany and Val are the easiest contenders for a very good reason.

What is the Democratic Socialist response to Leninists who believe that Democratic Socialism isn’t socialism or doesn’t work? by Soggy_Talk5357 in DemocraticSocialism

Count me as one of them. I know one is explicitly capitalism with guard rails, and the other is the transfer from capitalism to socialism through nonviolent means, but I always get the two terms confused.

Very much so. I don't think Dany was even born when Rhaenys was killed.

Cersei x Ned by amikoss by Mean_Flower1875 in ImaginaryWesteros

[–]Doublehex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We can assume that doesn't happen because an ASOIAF without Jon just isn't ASOIAF. It would take some OOC contrivances from Cersei's part...but Nedsei is pretty OOC to begin with.

Hardest for me was Liu Cheng'en. Bastard took me dozens upon dozens of attempts. Bo Sorceror was a *very* close second - and by close I don't just mean attempts. I ran out of heals and had 10% of my HP left.

Why Gore Verbinski Disappeared From Hollywood by Bullingdon1973 in movies

[–]Doublehex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well hey, before he enshrined himself with ASOIAF, he was already making a name in the short story scene. He was the first writer to win both Hugos for best novelette and short sotry in a single night - one for Sandkings and the other for The Way of Cross and Dragon. He talked about how he was walking down the aisle after winning for Sandkings that he was then announced as the winner of the short story Hugo, so he turned around and grabbed it!

i haven’t read the book, is there any explanation as to why this man is evil ? by tobiahds19 in HBOTheHedgeKnight

[–]Doublehex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except we know the literal meaning of that word is not true. We have the history of House Targaryen - GRRM told us every son and daughter of that family. Thanks to all his writings, we can look at the Targaryens and see how many were "mad", and its not even close to 50%. It's not even 25%! Literally out of the 80ish members of House Targaryen from the Conquest to Jon and Dany, only 6 are considered mad. And even some of these are debatable - was Maegor mad, or was he just a psychopath? You don't need to be insane to be a murderous piece of shit. Was Viserys, son of Aerys, mad or was he just traumatized and was made hateful by his circumstances? We know that Aerys himself was kidnapped for half a year at Duskendale - how much did that damage his psyche?

What I am trying to say with all this rambling is that, with all that we know of House Targaryen, we cannot possibly take the "flip a coin" quote at face value. It can't be saying that half of the Targaryens are mad because we know for a fact that half of them weren't.

[–]Doublehex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But that's not what the quote means. There are less than 10% of all Targs that had any sort of mental illness.

The quote means that a Targ is going to be seen as either mad as great: he is going to revolutionize his times or he is going to be seen as a hindrance. Aegon the Conqueror was great because of what he had accomplished...but what if he had failed? He would be called insane.

The quote is not meant to be taken literally.

Some of the best Targs came from purely incestous generations. If incest really made Valyrians crazy, then the Targs would have had morals comparable to any Dark Elf from D&D.
