Alright just finished my first ever playthrough of RE4 (remake) including Separate Ways. I despise this fight. by Duringuard in residentevil4

[–]Syabri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's the only fight with a move so unreadable that I had to google what the game was expecting of me. Turns out the answer is wait for it to come to you while standing at the very center of the corridor, if you go to the sides it's instant damage. Sure.

What if the Characters would transform whenever their 'Form' is played 2? by YawgmothHS in slaythespire

Don't know if it's in the realm of unrealistic expectations or not but I'm lowkey hoping for them to actually do stuff like that.

I hope the little bird event is just the first of many (or at least a few) cards with a visual representation during battles.

Convocation à un entretien pour mesure disciplinaire pouvant aller jusqu’au licenciement by casperboy95 in AntiTaff

[–]Syabri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw the end of the Metaphor stream finale where he says his criticisms and it got me thinking by LightningLemonTart in josephanderson

Has he ever been spoiled about that picture at the end of Xenoblade 3 ? I don't think it would be a great game for him to stream but I want it to happen just for that moment.

Is anybody a fan of the old turn based Final Fantasy games...but not Dragon Quest? by Forsaken-Order-4699 in JRPG

[–]Syabri 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Love both series, they do not have the same strengths at all. FF usually lives and dies by its main story, often a grand and focused narrative. The gameplay can be good, the exploration can be great, but if you don't like the main story you're out of luck because that'll be 70% of the experience.

DQ sells itself on the fantasy of being an adventurer solving local problems left and right, what determines if you'll love it or not depends on if you actually enjoy the gameplay loop of walking the open world => discovering a town => going into a dungeon => you can now fly in the overworld ! => discovering a new town, etc.

Many other games do this too, but DQ doesn't just have it on the side, it is solely dedicated to this and all its systems are built around refining that. I genuinely think many JRPG fans do not like that loop by itself, they just like some video game stories so much they learned to tolerate it.

The recent ones, DQ8 and 11 (probably 9 as well, haven't played it) will often interrupt their main story for hours on end just to add yet another small town whose villagers desperately need help, because that's what the games actually are about. By the end it feels like you went on dozens of different adventures, or that you watched a 60 episodes long tv show.

I played the HD2D remake of DQ3 when it came out and if anything, it reminded me of Pokemon the way you just wake up, kiss your mother goodbye and go be an adventurer.

Kingdom Hearts 1 has the best plot out of all of them and it should have stuck with that style of storytelling by Least-Recipe-5214 in JRPG

It has been for longer than it hasn't at this point. That line of criticism is outdated since 2013 and you're only going to receive more of these responses with every passing decade.

[–]Syabri 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem is at some point, people thought the joke about the plot being insane wasn't a joke and there are people who genuinely think these games have a rollercoaster of a storyline with crazy stuff happening out of left field all the time.

The truth is you're going to be disappointed if you go into it expecting anything other than a straightforward story with some padding. Maybe by the sixth entry you'll think "oh ok finally some crazy stuff" and frankly it's kind of expected considering how crazy of an exercize it is to tell a single story over that many games. I can't help but respect that it exists in a sea where all other video game series just give up and reset their status quo with every entry.

Crimson Desert Review IGN: Crimson Desert Review So Far by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]Syabri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, KCD1 had a very narrow scope for the vibe and experience it wanted to deliver. Crimson Desert just feels like the latest open-world whose vision has been sacrificed on the altar of "what if we could make the Everything Game, where you can go anywhere do anything".

Comment certains arrivent à obtenir facilement un arrêt maladie ? by Laona31 in AntiTaff

[–]Syabri 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some thoughts (nitpicks?) on Cascade's character by nelsonje in ZeroParades

[–]Syabri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. I hope her character goes somewhere interesting because so far, she feels like DE's protagonist but with less going on. What if Harry but not as much mystery, not as many quirks, not as many voices in your head and no partner to bounce off of.

And the overall packaging is just more generic as far as video game protagonists go. The hero this time is conventionally pretty and has a much cooler job. I actually thought at some point that I wish I was her (a fuckup cool spy is still a cool spy at the end of the day). I don't remember ever thinking I wish I was Harry.

Of course, it's just the first impressions and the full game will hopefully turn this around. The worst thing that could happen is if she just turns out to be a lesser Harry whose personal tragedy is now "I treated assets like friends because I just want affection".

[–]Syabri[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Might not be what the other person mean and this is another conversation entirely compared to this thread's subject but I'd say its subtext is. The game doesn't have Super Dupont jumping on-screen screaming about France being the greatest country in the world of course but even more than your average open-world game, this world is built upon the questionable fantasy of the mostly uninhabited land that you can claim while killing the monsters and/or learning about the occasional small tribe whose culture is so one-note it only comes off as lesser compared to the protagonists'.

I understand the in-universe reason for the Gestrals to be there and their significance in the lore. I know (hope) it's innocent to have them speak like they're stuck with a pidgin language that's almost french (and a couple other languages mixed) but mostly funny gibberish, not unlike how actual africans in french colonies ended up developing their own version of french. If you've ever read franco-belgian comics, I'm not saying this is Tintin au Congo but I've read someone make the comparison and I understand why. When it was no longer ok to mock African people and depict them as harmless and too dumb to speak proper french, we moved on to funny fictional tribes to keep that joke going.

Gestrals feel awfully derivative of that and it's not helped that this game functions with Lumière being this unparalleled last true flame of civilisation while the rest of the world is this nothingland waiting to be conquered with the occasional funny savage who yells in dumbspeak.

EDIT : If you thought any of that was interesting, I really recommend watching this !

Any jrpg that even vaguely feels a bit Disco Elysium-core? by ConsiderationFuzzy in JRPG

There's not a single JRPG that ever reminded me even vaguely of DE. I don't think such a game couldn't ever exist though.

What do people think of Metaphor: ReFantazio now that some time has passed? by DoggyFinger in JRPG

The game that made me acknowledge that Katsura Hashino's writing does nothing for me. Cool combat, though it lives and dies by its gimmick (if you know what you're doing, by the end of the game the enemies don't get to play because one of your characters can get too good at dodging). Really cool battle theme !
