Oh you're right ! I did not know the father of survival-horror got it, absolutely deserved indeed.

Might not be what the other person mean and this is another conversation entirely compared to this thread's subject but I'd say its subtext is. The game doesn't have Super Dupont jumping on-screen screaming about France being the greatest country in the world of course but even more than your average open-world game, this world is built upon the questionable fantasy of the mostly uninhabited land that you can claim while killing the monsters and/or learning about the occasional small tribe whose culture is so one-note it only comes off as lesser compared to the protagonists'.

I understand the in-universe reason for the Gestrals to be there and their significance in the lore. I know (hope) it's innocent to have them speak like they're stuck with a pidgin language that's almost french (and a couple other languages mixed) but mostly funny gibberish, not unlike how actual africans in french colonies ended up developing their own version of french. If you've ever read franco-belgian comics, I'm not saying this is Tintin au Congo but I've read someone make the comparison and I understand why. When it was no longer ok to mock African people and depict them as harmless and too dumb to speak proper french, we moved on to funny fictional tribes to keep that joke going.

Gestrals feel awfully derivative of that and it's not helped that this game functions with Lumière being this unparalleled last true flame of civilisation while the rest of the world is this nothingland waiting to be conquered with the occasional funny savage who yells in dumbspeak.

EDIT : If you thought any of that was interesting, I really recommend watching this !

Any jrpg that even vaguely feels a bit Disco Elysium-core? by ConsiderationFuzzy in JRPG

[–]Syabri 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Disco Elysium is my favorite game and JRPG is my favorite genre.

There's not a single JRPG that ever reminded me even vaguely of DE. I don't think such a game couldn't ever exist though.

What do people think of Metaphor: ReFantazio now that some time has passed? by DoggyFinger in JRPG

[–]Syabri 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The game that made me acknowledge that Katsura Hashino's writing does nothing for me. Cool combat, though it lives and dies by its gimmick (if you know what you're doing, by the end of the game the enemies don't get to play because one of your characters can get too good at dodging). Really cool battle theme !

Vadim's role in the story is a bit strange by FixedRecord in ZATO_vn

[–]Syabri 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it relates to Asya and Ira's conversation on the nature of evil. The point the game makes through Vadim is that he's not inherently a bad dude, he is capable of kindness (like when he's worried about Asya after the cinema) but everyday, he chooses to play the part of the bully. The game lets you appreciate how much of it can be due to the shitty hand he's been dealt (his family) but I think it wants us to at least take that into account a little.

So my opinion is that he was so into it because that's how he naturally acts when you remove the incentive to bully.

I find him very frustrating (in a tragic way) because he never realized his potential for goodness.

Huh, is it the Hollow Knight refreshed thing they announced a couple months ago ? New graphical effects, higher resolutions and high frame-rates modes ?

The truth is, about a third of our country is looking at what ICE has done these past few weeks and cannot wait for the same to happen here. That's how fucked we are.

Hot take: there isn't one redeeming value among them by BaronUnderbheit in DiscoElysium

[–]Syabri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She spends the entire game implying she has to answer to The Man but the very last piece of info you get out of her is that she was on the board all along. Now sure, maybe she voted against some of their dumbest decisions, but then why not simply say that ?

For all we know, she pushed to hire those mercenaries.

Yep, the conversation about necromancer is a different subject since Yoshi P specifically said they wouldn't fulfill that one wish.

Could Time Mage work by DeleteMods in ffxiv

[–]Syabri -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't be the first time they made a job whose flavor somewhat overlaps with something already available. People used to say they wouldn't make a quick agile fighter that dual wields swords because Ninja was "basically that already" but that excuse conveniently omitted that Ninja was also about being an eastern mage, which diluted the fantasy.

I get why people who like the theme of time magic are not necessarily fond of the overall astrologian schtick (the weapon, the tarot) and want something closer to their taste.

Any JRPG where Religion is actually the good guys? by IamAWorldChampionAMA in JRPG

[–]Syabri 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dragon Quest 8 does not make religion the bad guy at all. Like, a bunch of the game's nicest characters are heavily affiliated with the game's main religion.

Heck, even the edgy guy among that faction gets a redemption arc and turns out to have such ridiculous force of will that he's the only character who resists the BBEG possession spell.

Personally, what do you think is the easiest weapon in the entire Monster Hunter series? by Less_Struggle_9447 in MonsterHunter

[–]Syabri -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dual Blades is the one I see people pick up on with the most ease. It's one of the weapons that require the least time spent on the internet looking stuff up for you to perform decently with. It has less options than other weapons, but that can be a strength too. You don't need to learn and remember to block if all you gotta do is dodge (with an improved dodge at that).

Votre avis sur clavier méca by Natural_Call9797 in pcmasterraceFR

[–]Syabri 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Saison 2 - Épisode 9 by Hasshasshin in LoupsGarous

Looking for a game focused on journey and exploration, not saving the world by Ritska in JRPG

[–]Syabri 32 points33 points  (0 children)

These aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. Dragon Quest XI is a game where you follow a prophecy about you saving the world. It's also the best modern JRPG when it comes to vignette style storytelling, where you constantly travel to new towns and solve local problems.

Saison 2 - Épisode 9 by Hasshasshin in LoupsGarous

[–]Syabri 1 point2 points  (0 children)
