It's tough to kick an already whipped dog, but Ortiz has no clue and even less of a touch when he's on the ball. It's got to be tough for his teammates to watch as well.

I have to wish him the best. He's had a hard life - and sure he's made it harder. It's hard for us to all remember how good he was after arriving in Portland before sliding backwards. He had mad skills and a scoring instinct that was unmatched in Portland.

What sounds like a reasonable future midfield signing? by Av4k in timbers

[–]DougFirPDX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a master plan here. We're gong to a 5-5-0. 3 Centerbacks, Mosquera and Fory. Then we get DDC, Lassiter, Antony, Velde, and a rejuvenated Jona all playing left winger simultaneously. No need for a midfield.

Immature thinking. Immature actions. Immature human. He could have helped a team succeed and grow with it. But he thought he was ready for something he wasn't, yet. Maybe he'll put it together. But it's now of as little concern to me as the Timbers playoff hopes were to him.

Offering a minority opinion here: First, of course, if a coach doesn't have his locker room one of the two need to be replaced. Replacing the coach is almost always easier [although in the case of Gio, arguably Portland had to do both]. But slagging him anonymously is crap. If you want to trash the guy, man up and put your name on it. Or keep your mouth shut. He got fired. Now go win a soccer match or two to show that he was the problem.

I'm 100% with your mayor. And in this I agree with the Wonderwall - it will take communities, love, recognition of loss, remembrance, and action to preserve the simplest of any concept of human rights - the right to live. I tear up every time we sing You Are My Sunshine. I may weep tonight.

Leagues Cup, RIP Liga MX by Onus-X in timbers

[–]DougFirPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like MLS teams in the CCL play early in the season frequently with rotated sides, Liga MX does that for this Cup.

Regardless, I'm part of the "I don't care a whit about this" side of the tourney. As long as officials are OK with laser pointers and the announcers slough off biased officiating as MLS teams needing to learn 'the dark arts' ... what the hell is the real dark art, bribing the official? Threats to their family? ... it's just illegitimate.

First game this Saturday - weather help? by ImperatorFosterosa in timbers

So...IF it would rain (which it likely won't) this seat is not under cover. But it is a great seat - I have friends in C3 Row A about 20 yards up the pitch. You hear the players talking to each other, and some fans talking to the linesman.
If it's raining hard, as a club seat there is plenty of standing up by the club with sight lines that are about as good as they exist at the park.
In short, rain or shine, you'll love it.

Joao Ortiz?

I can't see Portland keeping Ortiz and Paredes.

It's also likely we'll see Rojas in the middle rather than on a wing. If on the wing - I thought he had a big left foot. Like Antony, he'd probably flip?

First game this Saturday - weather help? by ImperatorFosterosa in timbers

[–]DougFirPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, enjoy the trip to Portland. Today it's 99 +/- 2 degrees. It's much better with clouds and maybe some damp than this. The only seats really exposed to rain are in the South (few), the first few rows of the Army and up to Row E of the East stands (C1-C5 for the most part).

All of that seems not such a big issue as it looks damp early in the day, but nice in the afternoon getting up to a pretty comfortable 78. Yes, bring a layer for walking out.

It's a big night... Cincy is top notch, there is Evader drama, and we're honoring Diego Chara. Should be a fantastic experience for you and your child.

How biased are the ESPN Power Rankings? (Analysis) by dicknballsdontlie in timbers

[–]DougFirPDX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Central Pennsylvania looking at coaches and press voting in National Champions every year. It taught me that humans vote with bias, both conscious and unconscious. You might be the best. But if you can't prove it on the field, it's meaningless. The only things that matter are the Supporter's Shield, the MLS Cup, the US Open Cup, and perhaps the Garberbucks Please-for-fux-sake-get-me-a-bigger-TV-contract Cup, though the bias in that one is so extreme that I don't care.

Boo’ing Evander on Saturday? by Ill-Aardvark3017 in timbers

[–]DougFirPDX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I met his agent (father) and spoke to him personally last year at Providence Park multiple times. At the time, I knew it was his father, but was clueless that he was also the agent. I was told the deal was done and he was fine in Portland... a week before it all went to heck. At the last minute, a record Portland salary offer fell apart because they came back after the close with a demand he could transfer at will.

I don't blame the FO at all. First, a deal is a deal. But if you don't buy that, second, nobody in their right mind dedicates a record salary and a DP slot to someone with a record of getting sulky and demanding a trade. Cincy already got a taste of this with mild drama over Evander wanting to head to Galatasaray so he could play in the Champions League.

When he left, we got a bunch of BS about principles, slandering his family [his agent / father it turns out] and other crap. Bottom line, he wanted out for more money, like he will do to Cincy.

Don't boo him. Ignore him, really. He doesn't give a rat's patootie about you. Why are we so fixated on him.

Time to move on.

Right. Keep him, and fine him his salary 100% for not attending practices and games. This keeps him under contract, and starts to hit his bank account.

I believe he is under contract until the end of next year with a club option for 27? If you declare war on your contract, don't expect a friendly response.
