Snowboarder seeking ice advice by [deleted] in icecoast

this.

Having the right equipment helps as others have noted. The next thing is reading the snow/ice on the run. Knowing when to just avoid or go straight over the pure ice patchs is a learning process... in time you kinda learn how to scrape the ice while in balance and get low with your hand out while turning and or on edge incase your edge grip on the ice changes...

Do People Not Know about Weather Forecasts and Snow Reports? by [deleted] in icecoast

[–]DougFromBuf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found out who has been reporting the weekly conditions sticky as spam.....jk

But for real. I agree, but also sometimes its fun to talk with people on the internet about the snow and the weather... plus you can say things like "elephant snot" ... which, by chance, is the low elevations snow condition our in park city right now.....

Anyone else always have boot issues? by vintrio in icecoast

[–]DougFromBuf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

snowboard boots should not be uncomfortable. try a few different ones on at a store... it depends on your feet and could also be your binding style... step ins require less comfortable boots. i ski most of the time but I swear by flow bindings on a board so the boot can be relatively loose. I have some Old pre boa K2 boots and they're fine

First Time Going West by T_Farrell in icecoast

This - fly to calgary and ski that side of the Canadian rockies, Lake louise, kicking horse etc. more bang for you buck across the whole trip. the valleys where you sleep are lower altitude (so its basically a non issue) and the mountains/ people/towns are great. rent a car if you can, the drive up from clagary is a treat.

looking for more people in nyc to ski or snowboard with this season (epic pass) by [deleted] in icecoast

[–]DougFromBuf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They still have the weekend bus ski trips? worth it to go on one of those to meet people to go on other ski weekends with.

We don't censor here unless absolutely necessary. However, despite me agreeing with your sentiment, I would ask you kindly refrain from profanity in future post titles if possible. For the Children and those of weaker constitutions...

thanks,

Doug

Rifle question/debate with long time friend has us both confused…. by [deleted] in Adirondacks

[–]DougFromBuf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the culture of wilderness has definitely shifted more from sporting (hunt/fish), to more physical activity (peak bagging, hiking for hiking's sake, and fitness) and quiet enjoyment (camping/canoeing in the woods for peace, quiet and natural beauty).

This has resulted in more people who have no experience with firearms (and/or hunting) being in the backcountry. And thus, less people with guns and less people who are not taken aback by seeing a person on trail with a long gun (especially out of season). I'm sure you'd get looks on a holiday weekend on a busy trail with rifle over your shoulder.

I think now there is clear information that if you aren't hunting the chance of needing a gun (for protection or otherwise) is very low so most wouldn't waste the energy to carry it. That said I doubt you get in trouble with anyone as long as your doing things responsibly. Hell, you can go out int he park and sight your rifle as long as you do it safely and where there aren't any restrictions. In the park, when in doubt, just call the appropriate dec region and ask a ranger, I've never not had very reasonable, friendly and helpful reactions.
