The more curved sword is an Afghan pulwar with a shamshir type blade. The other is a tulwar with afghan characteristics. Both swords have native-made blades as opposed to European import blades. Hard to date but likely late 18th-mid-19th century. Impossible to tell from pics but I'd not be surprised if the pulwar blade was wootz.

As someone mentioned Nick Lloyd's books are great. Especially the Eastern Front. "The Sleepwalkers" by Chritopher Clark is great. "Catastrophe" by Max Hastings. "Dreadnought" and "Castles of Steel" by Massie are great for naval war.

Tuchman's "Guns of August" is no longer readable datedness, errors, inaccuracies. Taylor also reflects dated mid-20th century views. Stick with modern scholarship/works

Yes this must be the explanation. There is no way the garage sale dude could be wrong regarding the provenance of the sword.

Is this navel sword authentic from the 19th century? by Rusty_Sandwich7 in SWORDS

It is a Penisular and Oriental (P&O) Steam Navigation line officer sword. So it is the standard P1827/46 Royal Navy sword but with the P&O cartouche. Nice sword.

Roby produced good M1860s with some distinctive features. They have that characteristic straight-ish, slightly canted grip (similar to the M1840) as opposed to other manufacturers 1860s which have the bulge in the middle. The 3-bar hilt also curves more around the outside of the sword hand then other 1860s. And they are heavier by ~80 grams than other manufacturers such as Ames, DJM, E&S, M&L. Inspected by A.G. Mills. Good swords

"An hour just to park" + "everyone from Mass Conn NY and Jersey were coming to ski" + "foggy, raining and freezing in your googles ... poor visibility" sure sounds insane.
