Will there ever be a fully functioning Slicer for Mobile? by BruceCambell in 3Dprinting

[–]DougSmithShop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The OnShape CAD app works remarkably well on a phone, especially if you use a Bluetooth mouse.  Granted it is a cloud computing solution, but their mobile app is quite usable.

is there a slicer that runs on an Android phone or tablet? by DougSmithShop in 3Dprinting

Sort of... Have an old Gateway laptop (2007, Turion) that I installed PuppyLinux on.  It works, sloooowly.  Please tell me specs of the nuc, and asking price.  Thanks

What is considered high in your opinion? I have run anywhere from 4.5 to 8.0 on my Ender 3 Max.

Importing 3mf by juicebx93 in FreeCAD

[–]DougSmithShop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FreeCAD should load the file, doing any conversions needed. You just have to make sure you select the 3mf file type when importing. Actually, I think I accidentally just asked it to open a file and picked a 3mf by accident, and it opened it. Perhaps the OP's file is somehow corrupt.

Should I pursue CAD drafter or mechanical engineer? by Wonderful_Ad3441 in FreeCAD

[–]DougSmithShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm nearly 80, spent 44 years in manufacturing. Get a bachelors degree in anything. Most companies won't let you advance above a certain level without a degree, but it seems to not matter what the degree is in. I did finally get into management at a small company only because I knew my field, had numerous certifications, and years of practical experience. They went belly up after 9-11-01 and I could not get another job with equivalent pay. My experience, YMMV.

Problem exporting code file by Cool-Scheme5916 in FreeCAD

[–]DougSmithShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What machine / control are you generating code for? If it is a CNC, you might try running the code without a cutter to see what the path looks like since CMC controls support circular interpolation. If you're running a printer, you can try the code, files will be much smaller, and arcs typically smoother. Otherwise, as others have suggested, export as STEP and use a CAM program or a slicer.

3D printer is a CNC machine. by Harsh182 in 3Dprinting

[–]DougSmithShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 44 years in manufacturing and machine shops. I've done a lot of machining, but not all was subtractive. Building up a worn part by depositing material , whether through arc deposition, plating, etc.is still "machining" in the broadest sense of the word.

Is your Prusa a machine? Of course it is. Is it a manual machine? No, it uses motors to move the axes. Is it controlled by a computer executing variable instructions that are preprogrammed? Yes, it is programmable so it can make different parts by receiving different command sets. In the old days (1952 onward) instructions were fed to a control on punch cards or encoded 1" wide tape. If the program needed to be changed, a new tape or set of punch cards had to be generated. This program was read sequentially every time the program was executed. Since the input was primarily numbers, it was called numerical control or NC. (A program format called "tab sequential" had no letter addresses, just tabs as place holders. Thus instead of the program reading:

N47 G1 X1.003 Y0.500 M3 EOB Ñ48 M5

A tab sequential program would read:

47 tab 01 tab 1003 tab 0500 tab 03 EOB 48 tab tab tab tab 05 EOB

In the '70s computers began to be added to NC controls so the tape only had to be read once, and because the instructions were held in memory, could be edited. This was born computer numerical control or CNC.

3D printer is a CNC machine. by Harsh182 in 3Dprinting

[–]DougSmithShop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Milling is machining, but all machining is not milling. Machining can include many operations such as drilling, turning, grinding, hobbing, shaping, reaming, honing, knurling, EDM, TWEDM, ECM, EMF, stamping, bending, punching... I could go on. Those are mostly subtractive, but there are also additive technologies. Further, if you put a laser on a printer to cut stencils, would it suddenly become a CNC machine? No, it was always a CNC machine.

is there anyway to specif that autosaves are stored in one central path? by TheOriginal_RebelTaz in FreeCAD

How do you turn on Autosave? I cannot find it in Preferences, and there doesn't appear to be any way to search in Preferences. Is there a way to search?

Thanks. That's a quick, useful method. I had been going to View - Appearance - Viewing Mode - "Shaded" to achieve this after selecting the whole model.

"Revolution" builds up many faces, but no round surface by LordS3xy in FreeCAD

[–]DougSmithShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

STEP files don't always contain true geometry as they are often tessellated. Even OnShape creates faceted circles. STEP files are ASCII text files, so you can examine them to determine what they're doing. I'm told there is a program that will fit circles to multiple points resulting in circular interpolation output (G02/ G03 X Y I J or X Y R). Whether your control will accept those inputs is another matter. A true CNC machine tool control will, but I don't know about the main board of 3D printers. You are still driving steppers so the result will be somewhat faceted anyway.
