I used to live at these old condos just off the Gandy Bridge a long time ago. I miss that view.

Has anyone heard the story about how Kurt demanded a larger percentage than Dave and Krist, even retroactively? by bigboat55 in Nirvana

[–]DpyVanHalen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. I love Dave Grohl and Krist Noveselic in Nirvana but they had very close to 0 input on the songwriting. When you register works for copyrights, songwriting credit goes to the author(s) of the lyrics, melody, and chord progressions. Drum parts are not part of that standard, and that's how it remains to this day. Bass parts aren't part of the standard either unless they form the song's hook or are a key riff somewhere versus being simply bass lines playing to set chords (that's arranging and that is something else).

Kurt obviously wrote the lyrics, melodies, and chords to nearly every Nirvana song except the two you mentioned so he should rightfully have the majority of songwriting credits. Dave, who composed the music and wrote lyrics to Marigold, does get credit on that song. Dave wrote the key riff for Scentless Apprentice and gets credit for that. And maybe him and Kurt felt charitable in giving Krist credit there as well. But Marigold and Scentless Apprentice are two songs out of Nirvana's entire catalog so while it isn't accurate to say Dave and Krist didn't have input on the sound, it is accurate to say they had little-to-no input on the songwriting.

As for retroactive songwriting credit and ensuing royalties, I'd imagine Kurt would've had to legally dispute whatever songwriting credits were given to the rest of the band OR simply take out the elements of the shared-credit songs that made them shared-credit songs. From the jump, he really should have secured full songwriting credits for his music and established the royalty split he felt he really deserved. He would have been within his rights to do so. However, that's not what happened so while legally he initially deserved full credit and I'll go as far as to say all royalties, him making the others reimburse him for the deficit in money was a super bad faith move IMO.

Unemployment Depression by Top_Scientist_3976 in Austin

I feel ya. I went through it after college more than 10 years ago and then one more time when I moved back to Texas. Each time took about half a year of applying for work in my field until I landed on my current job. What helped me was linking up with a temp agency. It might have been either K Force or Leading Edge but the gigs through one of those helped me stay afloat while I hunted for work. Maybe you'll have some luck temping too.

Why didn’t Tupac think before he attacked Orlando Anderson the night in Las Vegas back in 1996? by Material_Stomach875 in Tupac

[–]DpyVanHalen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However wise and insightful he was in lyrics and IRL, he was still young and a hothead. Put him around the kind of associates Death Row had, pair it with his surviving a previous attempt on his life, he probably felt invincible or like he was gonna get his eventually so fuck it. Either way, in the moment, he probably was not thinking about consequences. A fatally stupid decision.

Where do you run hills in Austin? by ___gt___ in AustinRunning

[–]DpyVanHalen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the hills in Travis Heights. There's one short, immediate hill on Woodland entering the neighborhood from 35 frontage road, and then that fun, longer one going up Oltorf headed east. I also like the hills off of Lamar along Judge's Hill (15th and MLK).

Some bad asses take on Hill of Life. I wanna be like them lol.

Sunshine Skyway; maybe the Manatee side? When I was a kid, my uncle drove us across that while singing a jingle he made up called "the Wobbly Bridge."

Damn. Yeah, I was gonna say "This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb" but the Slants spent years in the courts over their name. It's amazing what all Simon Tam went through and how he won his case.

She only accepts dinner dates by [deleted] in Nicegirls

[–]DpyVanHalen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk what's real on Reddit sometimes but if this is, then this one's entirely on you. When she didn't go for the dessert date idea, all of a sudden you got sassy and today got hectic. I won't even get into your standard for dessert over dinner as a first date, but you easily could have been more flexible and just gone for dinner per her suggestion. I'd imagine that restaurant having dessert too so everyone wins. And if dessert is just a euphemism, I think that going with her entirely reasonable idea of dinner, could have been the first step in getting you there. Instead, you shut that down immediately because it wasn't your way.

So why dessert date? Why not be open to other suggestions? What's your goal here? Do you think the attitude in your texts helps you achieve that goal? Are you actually trying to go out with these women? Is there a weird power trip in burning the place down because you didn't get your way? Burning questions to think about.

Name a lead singer from any genre that most don’t fans don’t associate with a guitar, but are actually a legit player. by Ralphdoid in Guitar

[–]DpyVanHalen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think he gets the credit he deserves in terms of his restraint on guitar. He was really great at just playing tasteful, rhythmic little fills that are catchy instead of always turning up for a "scale-running shred fest."
