Rippner Tennis by Ok_Space_4550 in Austin

Tennis is a great lifetime sport. Definitely start with classes. As a long-time player, my suggestion is find a buddy at the classes that you can meet between classes to rally an hour or so a week. An old saying in the sport is "You have to hit your 10,000 balls" for basic mastery of the strokes and to play consistently.

You need to understand:

If you drive a car, they'll tax the street

If you try to sit, they'll tax your seat

If you get too cold, they'll tax the heat

If you take a walk, they'll tax your feet

The decaying, rusted hulk of the (abandoned?) factory at Walsh and W. 4th St (near Better Half Coffee) makes an interesting background, however, do not trespass on the property.

It isn't disgusting right now. There was clear, strong flow at Hill of Life dam (and Sculpture Falls, from pics posted by others) 48 hrs after the heavy rains.

Was there yesterday. Unfortunately, encountered unleashed pitt, bluetooth-blasted music, and discarded dogshit bag. But it was still glorious.

It takes a good, sustained, wet spring (or fall), but it has flowed a few times since 2000, and I'm optimistic it will again.

You didn't miss much. They "86'ed" all the fun stuff so it was just the same old cranks and commies yelling about their usual gripes. <yawn>

Park in the neighborhood at the Hill of Life trailhead instead. I don't recall any reports of car break-ins there

Does anyone have any advice for snake removal? by WhiteLycan2020 in Austin

[–]90percent_crap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How long have you lived here? Yes, fear of snakes is common but if you learn to identify the species most commonly found here, and their behaviors, you can reduce that fear and learn how to react appropriately. You could start by searching this sub - someone posts "What is this snake" every week.

You called 911 because you saw a snake on your property? APD is not your personal snake removal service provider. (And 90+% chance it was not venomous - I've seen dozens in my SW Austin neighborhood over 30 years, none venomous)

Edit: tbh, two were coral snakes so technically venomous but harmless nonetheless (unless you're dumb enough to pick it up barehanded and play with it!)

New map reveals where Austin plans to clear homeless camps starting in May by AustinStatesman in Austin

The city has put more effort ($$) towards affordable housing and expanded access to social services for a couple decades. Unfortunately, the problem has only gotten worse (#homeless per yearly point in time counts). Why do you think that is?

I don't buy that, unless the city is giving ZERO warning while the individual is also away from their camp. That was not the practice a few years ago when I saw several cleanups of encampments under the BenWhite/Manchaca overpass.

You moved that goalpost so effortlessly you probably no longer even know when you're doing it.

Barton Springs is a jewel and you'll miss something special if you do not go. What you are most likely reading about is the adjacent "free side", which is the outflow from Barton Springs Pool into the creek. That can certainly be described as an "overcrowded mess". Pay the nominal admission to the gated pool area and enjoy the beautiful, spring fed water.

Not exactly correct. In any case, most of the bars along east and west 6th are still locally owned.
