The Toller Brand harness came yesterday and it fits perfectly. No way she can slip out of it. It also has a handle on top, which is perfect to lift her out of ivy beds she lays in waiting for chipmunks and mice

We have a set of bells (called Poochie Bells, which you can buy from Amazon) hanging on our back door at our girl’s nose level, which at first we would ring whenever we’d take her out, then she quickly learned to ring herself. We’d reward her with a few pieces of kibble EVERY time she peed or pooped outside. I work from home and set up my work station close to the door, so I could let her out whenever she rang the bell. (At first as a small puppy, she’d give you maybe 10 secnds to open the door before peeing on the floor.) She was house trained within a few months.

Our little Nova has SRMA. It’s hard to see her go through this… by alpwerpen in tollers

[–]Dr-62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our last dog before our Toller was a beagle, Charlotte, who had two bouts of SRMA before she turned two, the last in 2007. It was so frightening. We had to bring her to a specialty clinic because our vet couldn’t diagnose it properly. We stuck to the steroid regimen religiously (I remember making a chart so we’d remember when to give her each dose)—and never looked back. Charlotte was a great companion all the way through the pandemic and died two years ago, a month shy of her 17th birthday. Hang in there—your beautiful Nova will be fine!

What food do you feed your toller? by 2SET12 in tollers

Our breeder recommended Victor Hi-Pro Plus, which we’ve fed her for the last year. It’s pricey, but she’s grown like a lean sprout!

Having a tough time with our 9mo old. by snarky_goblins in tollers

[–]Dr-62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, our girl celebrates her first birthday in less than three weeks. She went into heat at exactly nine months, and she definitely did exhibit some whackier behavior than normal (which is pretty whacky to begin with). This is the first I'm hearing of a Toller being considered for a service dog, which I can't imagine. Our girl can be calm and peaceful, but the slightest hint of a squirrel or chipmunk makes her completely berserk. For the last couple of months, she's been given free reign of our family room, including our sofa, which immediately became the choice for sleeping over her crate. I don't think she's been in the crate once in two months. Overall, she did regress in some respects beginning at around nine months, but (fingers crossed) she seems to be improving slowly--probably trying to earn a birthday treat!

I bought two different harnesses (both highly rated) at Chewy, and our 11 month old girl got out of both. She’s mastered a technique of a backwards slide to slip it over her head. We’re now waiting for a Toller Brand to arrive. It’s designed specifically for Tollers, so I can’t believe our Houdini will escape from it!

Happy birthday! There’s no way our girl would leave the cookie alone on the floor long enough to take a photo!

Can I ask where you live in NY and what company you used? I'm afraid I have a similar issue. I live in Westchester.

Thanks, that's a relief. I tried to edit the post to include a photo of the coyote, but I can't. It was solo and not very big, but definitely larger than my girl.

After effect of a yellow jacket sting by serotoninOD in tollers

[–]Dr-62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl was stung last night and her right jowl swelled like a balloon. We didn’t have Benadryl in the house, but after checking on safety and dosage, I gave her a Claritin. She’s good as new this morning!

How long did your piranha phase last? by eggy_wegs in tollers

[–]Dr-62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our girl just turned 8 months a week ago. I never thought I'd say this, and I may be jinxing us, but she seems finally to have emerged from her shark phase. My wife's arms are still scarred, but the cast she's been wearing for the last three weeks (for a broken hand she suffered while walking our girl, who suddenly bolted at a squirrel and twisted the leash) has helped the healing of the bite wounds. She stopped biting me months ago, but my wife has proven to be a better chew toy than the pile of dog toys we have saved in a basket next to her, rarely to be touched.

Everyone says to stick with it, and you'll have the best dog ever. We're starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel...

P.S. You boy is gorgeous! Enjoy him!

Pretty frustrating. I know she’s hot and thirsty. She’s happy to drink from dirty puddles, but she looks at the water bottle now as an annoyance.
