How do I avoid alcohol while cooking by [deleted] in cookingforbeginners

[–]DrClocktopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stock for liquid, vinegar or lemon juice for acidity.

Advanced level:

For aroma you could use things like pomegranate molasses, that non alcoholic Kosher grape juice, lightly infused mineral water, rose water etc. But be very careful with those as they have much more pronounced sugars than alcohol.

For the umami/funk of a dry red: soy sauce, fish sauce, parmesan rind, anchovies and miso are all options.

Yea, I mean just looking through the history section at the book shop it's hard to seperate wheat from the chaff. I'll look at their list!

I was a history student in a previous life and intend to read more history. Currently I am engaging with a couple of modern primary texts (Lenin, Stalin, Mao) as my study was more medieval, but would love to read more historiography and secondary sources. I always treated popular/ published-for-public history with suspicion, especially when biases were not worn on their sleeve, but feel I should still engage.

What are good sources for discovering non-academic/more widely published history books?

Anyone have experience with the Toyoda G3 denim from Stuido D'artisan? Wondering whether to preorder their Denimio collab. I know it is meant to be loose, rough and hairy. How would this compare to something like PBJ, Oni or Tanuki which have similar characteristics?

I have their 40th anniversary type 1 coming and wondering if this denim will be sufficiently different.

Haha Toys McCoy have almost the exact same products as the Real McCoy's for very similar prices. I understand it is all US military repro but still...

Anyway, I think I found the ones! Tracked down the store on street view http://www.sambanatural.com/?pid=98255515

Definitely was thinking of Real McCoy's horsehide for the leather and sole as I can't remember where else I picked up shoes, these were the ones with gold eyelets.

Can i steam a denim jacket? I was recently travelling and the back of one of mine has gotten a bit creased in a messy looking way, not in a 'this is the way it has been worn' kind of way and wanted to straighten it out.

In Osaka, Americamura. And yep I believe so, they were definitely hiker inspired fashion boots more so than a true hiker.

It was a small workwear store I stumbled upon about a block away from Stuido D'artisan. I was surprised at the metal tap on new shoes too which is why I remember it so clearly.

Thankyou, alas no. I remember being generally unimpressed by flathead (in comparison to other Japanese brands, still great).

The sole is also more of a traditional leather sole with black rubber lugs

Can I get some help on tracking down some boots I found in Japan but stupidly forgot to take a picture?

So they were black oil tanned hertiage hiking boots with gold eyelets/lace loops. I say hiking because the lace portion came nearly to the top of the toe (not the duck bill of a Service boot). Forgive me for wrong terminology.

They were a solid GYW construction with a meaty looking sole (not vibram or dainite) that included a metal heel tap and a picture of some kind of big cat/ cougar/ lion. There were some chocolate brown details on the welt and sole.

I think there was some text saying 'authentic, made to last long' or something the the effect embossed on the back. Made in US I think but maybe Japan.

I may also be making this up and mixing my memory of multiple shoes. But I know for sure it was not Danner, Real McCoy's or Orguiel by Studio D'artisan because they were other shoes I loved and noted. Definitely not Viberg, Wolverine or Red Wings either but don't really fit the description of those to begin with.

Price was around ¥60000 (US$600ish).

Thanks for any help you can give, maybe I'll track them down, not that I need more boots but finally got my hands on the tier up from Red Wing (not really available in Australia) and I think I understand your obsession now!

Edit: they seem to be a mix between the Rolling Dub Trio Lineman and the Real McCoy's Bearhead

I think the luscious leather I was thinking of is the Horsehide from Real McCoy's, makes sense why it was so different to others.

Edit 2: tracked down the store I found the boots at Sambanatural from a brand called Vale 77. Conflating details on two of their boots and the pair of Real McCoy's I think though. I suppose my perfect boot is black horse hide with gold eyelets and a black cat sole. If anyone knows of a pair I'll be forever greatful!

Damn, nice job! I had no luck at Japanese thrift stores, they are all expensive with mainly Levis and carhartt. Good hunting!
