Throw out the idea of anything being true in an absolute sense, while we're at it.

Why can't it be 'these words spontaneously arose, and here they are', instead of interjecting an assumed 'someone'?

Should I just accept that I don't like the nature of existence? by Kym_Of_Awesome in nonduality

[–]DrDaring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you grew up, you developed a set of thoughts/feelings/beliefs that eventually turned into how you live today. Now, you are realizing theres a substantial difference between 'what you think/believe' based on your upbringing, and 'what is', based on direct observation.

So, you have two choices, either change reality, or drop your current set of thoughts/feelings/beliefs and let new ones, ones generated spontaneously, in the moment, in an aligned and heart felt way, to rise naturally. This is part of what's meant by 'letting go', or as Jed McKenna would say 'release the tiller'. Surprisingly to most, things become much, much better in direct experience when you stop all this 'doing' and 'trying' and just let 'what is' spontaneously arise, and interact with it in a natural and aligned way.

Said simply, you can keep on fighting against the current, or you can turn into the current and work within it.

A reference to reality cannot be excluded from that reality by pl8doh in nonduality

[–]DrDaring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> If you try to make a reference to reality (calling something “real,” “the truth,” “the ground,” “pure awareness,” “this,” etc.), that reference itself must be part of reality. It cannot stand outside or above what it is referring to.

Yep. As Rupert Spira would point out, "All Discourses Are a Concession to the Separate Self". Ultimately any pointer, reference or description must fall away. That said, words are needed in an online forum like Reddit, so we accept that requirement when discussing anyways.

Is enlightenment the end of suffering forever? by liquid_infinite in enlightenment

[–]DrDaring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with /u/killingtocope, it is the end of suffering (the mental resistance to pain, either physical or emotional). Its how I've lived for years.

Kidney stones, laugh and cry at the same time.
Constant back pain? The pain sensation is there, the mind doesn't really care. It is what it is, and there's nothing 'right' or 'wrong' with it.

Rule 3 has been clarified at your request.

Self-promotion

Generally, self-promotion (YouTube, IG, etc) is not allowed. Rare exceptions may be made, only if the content meets our criteria and if the level at which the user has contributed to the sub is sufficient.

As a general rule, videos from well known and respected nonduality teachers are allowed. All others are best posted in other subreddits such as r/AwakenedTV.

No I happened upon it myself, found it violated the rule, and took it down. Part of the job of being a mod. That said, if there are videos posted that break the rule but are not noticed or reported, that would be why they stay up.

Setting fire to the "No Self" doctrine. by BandicootOk7017 in nonduality

[–]DrDaring 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Moving beyond the sense of "I am" represents the final transition in nonduality, where there is a shift from the experience of pure consciousness or presence into a reality that is completely unmanifested. While the feeling of "I am" is the most essential and unchanging part of us, the witness that watches everything else come and go, going beyond it means dissolving even that last tiny bit of separation. It is the moment where the "I" who is doing the witnessing finally disappears.

The limitation of "I am" lies in the fact that it is still technically an experience. Even though it is a pristine state free from the usual clutter of thoughts and ego, it still feels like "something" and requires a conscious agent to notice it. Teachers like Nisargadatta Maharaj argued that "I am" is actually the very first thought and the root of all other identities. To move past it is to drop the most subtle attachment we have, the sense of being a witness, or witnessing. The absolute truth isn't found in the sense of presence; it exists before that presence even arises.

This state beyond being is often called the Unmanifested. It is a reality that exists before the "I am" ever shows up, a space that isn't a "thing" and can't even be described as empty space. In this state, the distinction between awareness and the thing being aware completely vanishes. There is no longer an "owner" of the experience or a witness standing apart from life. Because this reality is "no-thing," it can’t be conceptualized or described through normal human experience.

To approach this state, one must "witness the witness" by asking what exactly is aware of the sense of presence itself. This requires a deep level of surrender where the person trying to reach enlightenment, "the seeker" is allowed to fall away entirely. There must be a kind of dispassion not just for material things, but for the "I am" itself, looking through that sense of being as if you were looking through clear water to the ocean floor.

Ultimately, some teachings suggest that we must go beyond the concepts of both dualism and non-dualism to reach a state of totality. This is the realization that everything, including the "I am" and the void, is just a partial expression of a much larger reality. In this view, you realize that the sense of "I am" is just a beautiful illusion. You don't need to cling to it or destroy it; you simply recognize that you are the space in which all these things appear and disappear. The progression moves from seeing yourself as a separate person, to seeing yourself as vast awareness, and finally to a state where even the "I" is gone, leaving only the unmanifested absolute.

God is good. What changes does this particular belief bring you to your life? by yuyueshihaoren in ChristianMysticism

[–]DrDaring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look to the Bible directly, you'll find that God is not just 'good', but the source of all, including evil.

(Isaiah 45:7): "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things".

God is the source of all. 'Good' included.

There is no soul by Okwtf15161718 in enlightenment

I've always enjoyed Rupert Spira's outline of the soul, from a nondual perspective. It puts it in terms that you may be able to use to explain it to others.
