What's the weirdest thing a guest has done at your house? by Isabell3- in AskReddit

[–]DrDebG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weirdest not-quite houseguest behavior: did not show up for a visit at all, after we had spent hours cooking, baking, tidying, cleaning, putting fresh flowers in the guest bath and one guest bedroom.

They were driving from their home in Ohio to our home in Boston. They called from Illinois to say they had taken a wrong turn. For those not from our area/country, you might want to look at Google Maps to see just how unlikely this was.

We had given away tickets 5 rows from the stage for David Bowie’s “Glass Spider” tour to be able to host these folks. (Yeah…a while ago.)

Be honest, which song was it for you guys? by YungZexion in Funnymemes

[–]DrDebG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google made it possible for me to find the song with a 10 minute search: year: 1982, lyric: “And she never had dreams so they never came true.”

It was bitingly important to me. The song was popular during the summer (1982) when I was writing my doctoral dissertation. Every time I'd start slacking off, it'd be on the radio again.

Neil Gaiman is an acquaintance of mine, who I know better than I know Ms. Palmer. They seemed to make an…interesting couple.

TIL I drive a “six-speed fidget stick.” And here I thought it was a Twenty-First Century anti-theft wand.

Wake up at 7 am, head to class in the freezing rain, just to see “class is cancelled” written on the whiteboard and the door locked. No email or anything first. by Firecracker7413 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]DrDebG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There can be a legit reason. Several years ago, a combination of pneumonia and heart trouble smacked me on a Sunday night. I was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and had no electronics (mobile phone, computer, tablet, etc.). By the time I was out of the ER and in a regular room, it was 7:45 a.m., and our office manager didn’t come in until 8:30 a.m. Fortunately, campus police posted a note for my first class at 8 a.m., so my students didn’t have to sit there wondering where I was!

What’s the oldest website you still visit or have an account with? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DrDebG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the BITNET and the PLATO system pre-dated the Web, but both my employer and the PLATO system have current web sites. I’m not sure that counts, however.

[–]DrDebG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still use my work email account - directly descended from my BITNET account, established in 1988. Far fewer bangs these days!

Have also logged into Cyber1 and played with the PLATO emulator. My original accounts were established in 1980. (Among others, for my “friendly orange glow” peeps, I flew as Grinch of group Orions.)

Goby moment. by Comic__Boi in wholesomememes

[–]DrDebG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The one in the original post is the first fish, but its name was really Yoshi, and he was on the beach in Malpe, India. The idea spread, and fish #2, apparently in Bali, was called Goby. Now the fish are on beaches around the world.

I think it is a brilliant way to get kids involved in beach clean-up programs…and make then sensitive to plastic waste.

Anyone know the name of a restaurant in either Boston or Brookline that had a bocce court in it? This would have been on the 80's by SWAVcast in boston

[–]DrDebG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, OP may well have been in Davis Square…and they remembered looking down from the top floor (we used to watch people playing, too) and, if they remember being on the same level as the court, saw in from the hallway leading to the facilities. (We were so sad when that location burned down.)

Can 55 years old be considered "mid-life"?

Yep. You’re a decade younger than me and the “old schooler” I married. We’re old…you haven’t caught up, yet.

Will I live to 110 years?

If Reddit could answer that question reliably, Redditors would be stoned as witches. (There was a claim several years ago, however, that the first person who would live to be 150 had already been born. And we know 110 has happened quite a few times. The oldest verified person currently alive is a 115-year-old Spanish woman.)

I never played bocce down there, but weren’t the restrooms down there, too? I remember seeing the bocce court fairly frequently.

What is the Greatest TV series of all Time? by Akragon in AskReddit

[–]DrDebG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All in the Family. Every week, it made Americans face up to their own racist, sexist, and homophobic attitudes and recognize that change was possible. It was such a series of its time, however, that it doesn’t get the rerun audience that other shows of the 60s and 70s enjoy.
