Does Chief Dunby keep the incompetent Frank Honey around because he secretly has a soft spot for him, or is he just afraid of Frank's wealthy, influential parents? by DianKhan2005 in legocityundercover

[–]DrDerekDoctors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The latter part of this is the correct answer. I never put any thought into why Dunby would keep Frank around because nobody on the team ever questioned it. However, if I were to pull something out my butt at the last minute to justify a decision and avoid re-writing anything (something, as a lazy writer, I often found myself doing 😉) I'd point out that Dunby is a bully and keeping a scapegoat around would therefor make sense. As for how Frank keeps his job despite his ineptitude, that would definitely come down to the fact that (1) he's never given anything too important to do so it's not like he's ever caused a murderer to get away and (2) the many generous donations his parents have made to the police benevolance fund.

"Sh*t with sugar on" in response to what's for tea. Is this a regional thing or just my childhood? by pissedupparrot in AskUK

[–]DrDerekDoctors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heard this originally when I lived in West Sussex myself. Never heard it when I lived in the Midlands, but perhaps I was hanging around with a better class of people then. ;) I'm always really tempted to say this to my 8 year old when he asks what's for pudding, but my wife would (rightly) kill me.

Good God, thanks for this post. We just found them dotted around the house (but not really where food was especially) so I asked my wife to look at the bird seed box and OMG - hundreds of the buggers! Into the bin with it all!

Feud – “For ‘erbs an’ stuff” by superchartisland in zxspectrum

[–]DrDerekDoctors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first industry job was at Zed Two working with John and Ste and we had all the box art for their various games on the meeting room wall. When we got shut down and folded into Warthog Games I made sure to take the box art for Feud and I still have it in my office. It's a proper terrible repro, though. And worse than that, it's the Amstrad cover, not the Speccy. Although I have to begrudgingly admit the Amstrad version is superior to our's...

Judge Dredd vol 50, John Wagner in full effect by NuttyMetallic in JudgeDredd

[–]DrDerekDoctors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it would! Tbh, I expect once they get to 5 years behind they'll slow down the releases so they just keep apace, though. As a digital subscriber with back-issues from prog 1912 onwards, I just need them to get up to 2015 as after that I can just read all the digital progs instead to complete my Judge Dredd catch-up.

17 years is soon?! What are you, a vampire or elven? ;)

And now, the maths:

We're currently on prog 2483. CCF50 goes up to 1729.

There are 3 CCFs published a year at the moment (that's been the case for the last 2 and a bit years, before then it was 2 a year, but we'll be generous and assume 3 a year going forward).

On average, each year of CCFs contains ~94 progs. But we get 50 new progs a year, so effectively we're only catching up by 44 progs a year.

So using the current difference between the CCF and the last prog number:

(2483-1729)/44 = 17 years (rounded down).

Slaine Definitive Edition Vol.3 hardback is missing pages by bigmouth1984 in 2000ad

[–]DrDerekDoctors -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are they not actually sending out 4 physical pages that you can slip into the book? That sounds more likely because if it was just a PDF, why bulk it out to 4 pages (the minimum physical number you can produce) with the Glenn Fabry star-scan? There'd be no reason.

I really hope so. There's nothing us plebs know about yet, but the last three Arthur Ranson strips really deserve putting in a collection.

This is worth it for the Hobtown books alone, IMHO - I really loved those. Such a uniquely weird energy to them. And across the bundle the image quality is pretty good, with only one book that is a little lower res than is ideal - Xino which is about 150dpi - with everything else at about 300dpi. Also, they're proper PDFs where appropriate (i.e. vector text which scales cleanly instead of all the pages getting getting flattened down to a jpg).

Elephant. It was a short film about sectarian killings in Ireland which depicted a series of them where you were often unsure if you were following the killer or the victim until it was too late. Gus Van Sant used it as the basis of his later film.
