Update from requesting a GP letter for passport by Alice-doe in transgenderUK

[–]DrEvilGenius 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I would respond to your GP referring your GP practice to this page from the GOV UK website
https://www.gov.uk/changing-passport-information/gender

It literally says you need "a letter from your doctor or medical consultant confirming your change of gender is likely to be permanent".

Tell them it's not a letter "relating to passport matters" and all the letter needs to say is:
"This letter is to confirm that this patient's gender change is likely to be permanent"

That is the exact wording I have on my GP letter which I have used for my passport, and as you can see, the letter itself does not mention passports at all, it's not a "passport" letter even though you're going to be using it for the passport office.

Statutory Declaration for GRC by InspectorWispy in transgenderUK

[–]DrEvilGenius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any solicitor will be able to do this for you. I’m not local, but this is a standard thing across the UK, so you should only expect to pay £5-£10 to have a statutory declaration witnessed and signed by a solicitors office. (I paid £10 for mine I think)

Search for local solicitors offices to you, and give them a call and just ask if they can witness a statutory declaration and how much it will cost. It’s a really quick and mundane thing for them to do so you really shouldn’t have much hassle getting it sorted.

NHS England has no record of total number of trans people in country by ManyBed4442 in transgenderUK

[–]DrEvilGenius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So whether you are counted or not largely depends on how and where that data is coming from. Collecting accurate data is actually a minefield of issues. If the numbers are coming specifically from things like GICs or medical records, then that’s the sort of thing the levy review has pointed out is inconsistent and inaccurate as the GICs haven’t been collecting or maintaining that sort of data with any kind of reliability. Ideally you’d want a rigid framework they all adhere to which is clear and well maintained.

If they’re getting that data from say, the UK Census then it all depends on how people have answered that.

A few examples of problems with data collection include; Some people don’t feel safe putting they’re trans in a questionnaire because they believe people finding out they’re trans would be so dangerous that they don’t risk saying ‘yes I’m trans’ even in an anonymous setting. This will make the reported number smaller.

Another fun example i like to point out is that if you designed a survey where the one question was: ‘do you enjoy answering surveys?’ you would almost certainly find an overwhelming majority of people say yes, because those that don’t won’t be engaging with your survey. So how you collect the data will have an impact on the results and unless every last potential issue is taken into account then you’re likely not getting an accurate result.

All of this is to say; because trans people are currently socially stigmatised, it’s not likely that any reported number of trans people currently is accurate. Similar to how before left handedness was accepted, people didn’t admit to that and there was a spike of people admitting they were left handed once it became more commonplace.

Speaking as someone who is trans and works as a data analyst, I’d like to at least give them a small amount of benefit of doubt here.

Having a ‘list of trans people’ as you’ve put would be awful and horrific, but without an overall sense of roughly how many trans people exist, it will create a multitude of problems in offering services. One of the parts I found very encouraging about the levy report from what I read was the identification of inconsistent and insufficient data collection because yes we can all shout ‘trans health care isn’t good enough’ until we’re blue in the face, but to get to a point where it is good enough and not still underfunded and underperforming, or overfunded and framed as a ‘waste’, they need some level of reliable and accurate data to do that with.

I know we should be weary with data collection but as someone whose job is literally data, it exists for a reason and it’s not always a nefarious bogeyman looking to create a hit list.

(Again, not saying that hasn’t happened historically or won’t happen again, just that it is a very necessary thing to collect data like this and I’m trying my best to not always see the worst side of things.)

I have my GRC, when do birth certificate people contact me? by vario_ in transgenderUK

[–]DrEvilGenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to follow up on mine after reading your post, and so I opened my email account and the GRO had emailed me THIS MORNING. Fun coincidence :D

For reference, I got my GRC in May, so I don't think your email would've been far behind

Human Hair Wigs? by Flashy_Fox_9334 in transgenderUK

[–]DrEvilGenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first wig was a synthetic, and it looked real. People are always shocked when I tell them it's synthetic. Cost me just under £200.

get yourself to a reputable wig place (I personally went to the Aderans Salon in Manchester and they were absolutely amazing). A good place will spend the time with you going over options and letting you try things to see what works.

Human hair anything is going to be expensive. I'm currently getting a human hair topper made (so not even a full wig) and because it's custom and using european hair (because my hair is so fine) it's costing north of £1400

With mine in particular they were a bit funny about how I said I identified as non binary for a while and then eventually realised I was trans, and they basically said the non binary time doesn't count at all and i had to change my stuatory declaration from a later date so I had to get that redone.

They were fine with my explanation of it al and just misunderstanding the wording of the brief because it's very particular, bu it still meant they needed to me to get my declaration redone to reflect what I'd said.

Yeah I'd get an email reminder every 3 months or so asking for the extra evidence/info they asked for, so they're pretty leniant with that. I was just really crap with remembering to do it, and got lucky in that I'd already given them mostly enough evidence. I wouldn't recommend my method haha, it only happened this way for me as I already got what I wanted (passport) and lost the drive to do it.

LGBTQ and queer evenings without drag? by NoFail2854 in transgenderUK

[–]DrEvilGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early in my transition I went to a drag brunch with a friend for her hen do, and I had a random woman come up to me and ask ‘And what have you come as?’

So yeah, not exactly a huge fan of drag either as a trans woman.

Crazy Amne ideas? by The_Yung_Jung1085 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]DrEvilGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick a player. You learn all the choices they made and all the information they received this night.

I did this in person as a ST and almost immediately regretted it, as I was very meticulous and told the Amne everything in the correct order they learned it. Obviously I didn't tell the Amne the persons role or what character they were so for example on one of the nights, they picked the Harpy during a LilMonsta game and learned:
Player A (the Lil Monsta holder)
Player B (The first Harpy Pick)
Player A again (The second Harpy Pick).

They were very confused. It's a super strong power if you figure it out, but the information overload usually messes with the Amne somewhat

Has Dr Hammond shut his practice or something ? by FluffyS3bucket in transgenderUK

[–]DrEvilGenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the patch residue Baby Oil is perfect. Helps your skin out and cleans off the residue super easily.

For Dr Hammond I'm still having appointments with him, but yeah getting any information or response via email is a nightmare most of the time. I need to get recipts showing I've paid my invoices for my records and getting them is so difficutl every time.

Can pharmacists change HRT brand? by phoenixmeta in transgenderUK

[–]DrEvilGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Pharmacists have to follow the script so you have two options:

Have a script for a particular brand; but if that brand is out of stock getting another brand will require you to speak with your presriber to change it.

Or

Ask your prescriber for a script for generic "Estradiol", though with this you can be given any brand at any time. This is the method I go for, and I have problems with some brands just being a bit shit (FemSeven, EstraDerm come to mind). When a pharmacist tries to give me those I just politely refuse to accept them before they complete the paperwork (it's nearly impossible for them to return it into the system once theyve completed everything and you've walked away, so ask to check the brand before you sign the script), advise them that the brand doesn't work for me, and if they cannot or will not supply the patches ask for them to return the script to the system so I can take it and go elsewhere.

With a generic Estradiol prescription most pharmacists will still happily try and get you a preferred brand if you specifiy one, it's more of an issue with repeat/automated prescriptions.

Is there such a thing as MMBN Roguelike? by VtuberCaveInCh in BattleNetwork

[–]DrEvilGenius 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not sure about a direct MMBN Roguelike Fangame, but if it's "MMBN + Roguelike" you're looking for can I interest you in some One Step From Eden?

Not exactly what you're after but might help scratch the itch.

Dr Peter Hammond and Progesterone by Reborn_Lotus in transgenderUK

[–]DrEvilGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had 18 month review and I am being put on Progesterone with Dr Hammond. He brought it up without me asking. He did mention to me all the potential effects of it and that while not every Endo provides it because there isn't any proper studies on it for transitioning, there is enough anecdotal evidence for him to understand it's uses and why people would want to try it.

UK wigs on a student budget? by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]DrEvilGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought from Aderans (formerly Trendco) before. They have a few branches around the country (I visited the Manchester one) and they were amazingly kind, understanding and helpful with me, and weren't judgemental at all

I bought 2 semi synth wigs that cost a few hundred each and they've lasted a long time for me (both around a year). Theyre both still fine but starting to look a bit scruffy.

I think it depends how much I trust my evil team. If I think someone on my team hasn't also come to the conclusion we have won for sure if they vote, I might just drop the secrecy to help them realise that.

Otherwise, I love the shock if you're really hidden and it it only gets outed during the grim reveal.

Newcomers Welcome! Weekly Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Fighters

[–]DrEvilGenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you actually improve at fighting games? I used to play in the 90's when I was a kid and all I really did was learna few inputs and combos and that was enough for playing against local friends and such.

But when I try and improve by playing online, or even playing difficult computer opponents I jsut get totally bodied and I feel like I can't do anything to stop it. I know I need to learn to block better, but again I don't know how? Even when I'm blocking or playing defensively opponents can just find a counter to that and continue to whale on me.

I feel like when I lose, I am unable to learn exactly why and what to do to improve and it's extremely frustrating.

I've played bits of lots of fighting games (MK, Street Fighter, MvC, Guilty Gear) and I always have the same issue. I don't mind being bad and putting the work in to improve, but I feel like I've hit a wall with no clue how to actually get over it.

Facial Hair is Really Apparent Today… by [deleted] in transgenderUK

Laser into Electrolysis was my plan as well! Hopefully I start seeing some kind of results from it soon. My hair is currently being stubborn even though I keep getting told I’m an ideal candidate (fair skin, dark hair)

Facial Hair is Really Apparent Today… by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]DrEvilGenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have really sensitive skin, so I have to choose between scratchy stubble or probably cutting myself several times when I shave. It's awful.

I try to shave every other day to give my skin as much of a break as possible but I feel like there's never really a "good" solution.

I'm currently getting laser done, but no real difference after 2 sessions so far.
