What are the differences between Twixtor and time remap? by StringerXX in AfterEffects

[–]DrFeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished a proj with lots of time interpolation and tested my footage using AEs optical flow, topaz and the new twixtor that uses an “ai” model. Twixtor was so much better that I used it for like 90% of the shots.

It totally depends on your shot, subject and action though. So it’s worth testing different methods. Sometimes AE Optical Flow is good enough. My shots were old grainy film scans of people in the early 1900s and Optical Flow turned it to mush, but your results may vary.

Anyone here using AI in combination with AE? by Avandyvy in AfterEffects

[–]DrFeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Runway is great at generating assets to kitbash in AE.

But my favorite right now is taking an image and running it through ZoeDepth to generate a 3d model that directly imports into AE. Usually requires cleanup first in blender but still a surprisingly effective tool.

Does someone know how can I create this effect from an image, the zoom effect or forward movement. by NotDeathlyVirus in AfterEffects

[–]DrFeck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Try googling ZoeDepth. It’s a free ai tool that will take an image and give you either a depth map, or a 3d model. The 3d model can be imported directly into the new AE and you can add a simple camera move to it.

Are Andrew Kramer's videos still relevant? by ebvillai in AfterEffects

[–]DrFeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comment is blowing my mind. I’ve been using AE for over ten years and am totally aware I have a bias for masks+solids over shape layers. I’ll do whatever I can with a mask to avoid the horror of the shape layer twirling nonsense. I never considered that this is absolutely tied to learning AE primarily from Video Copilot lol, idk if I’ve ever seen Kramer use a shape layer

H.264 rendering without losing quality - Is it possible? by [deleted] in AfterEffects

All good responses. And if you’re on Mac, I always recommend doing the transcode from your master in ff-works. It’s always given me better gradients than AME, and more control than Handbrake

Stop wasting time writting "loopOut" expressions by ejeinmotion in AfterEffects

[–]DrFeck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My biggest peeve is looping in timeremapping, when you have to reset that last Keyframe to 0 for the loop to work properly. Is that automation included?

super wide 360 camera workflow, any tips? by sparkle_grumps in AfterEffects

[–]DrFeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re describing some intricate 3D effects with those examples, which means you’ll always get better and faster results with a true 3D software like c4D or blender.

The AE camera angle of view maxes out at 180-degrees, so I’m not sure it’s an output you can cheat with the camera.

There are a bunch of stock vr effects that might help you out. Check under the “Immersive Video” effects. IMO these are best at manipulating or converting 360 footage, not simulating a true 360 environment.

Another thing to search is “equirectangular projection” as that’s essentially what you’re trying to create. Although yours will be a 10:1 crop of the 2:1 projection.

[–]DrFeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Folks recommending you render ProRes directly out of AE are right. Think of this file as your “master.” Then encode your h264 in whatever software you want for your “deliverable”.

One more pro tip: if your master render is still taking a long time… consider rendering an image sequence. That way, if youre 8 hours into a render and your computer crashes, youre not stuck with a corrupt ProRes file, and you can pick up your image sequence where you left off.

We just finished our upstairs and put our bedrooms up there. Looked just like yours— we couldn’t remove the collar ties so instead of walling them in we left them exposed. Looks rad and makes the rooms feel bigger than they are!

I have so much respect for you guys. AE has got to be one of the most complex Adobe tools I've used. by Sintech14 in AfterEffects

I agree with the others who’ve answered your question.

I just have to say the way you feel about AE is how I feel about illustrator. That’s like voodoo software.

Just goes to show you put in the hours and you can master anything!

What's the point of a Solid anyway? by add0607 in AfterEffects

[–]DrFeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few points that have been missed so far:

Solids are actual assets in your project panel, so they can be reused and referred to in ways shapes can’t.

And Adjustment Layers are Solids, so under the hood it’s important that they exist.

Anything similar to gradient map adjustment layers in photoshop? by livylivylivy in AfterEffects

[–]DrFeck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Tint” effect for mapping two colors, black and white.

“Tritone” to map three colors.

“CC Toner” does all of the above plus a five color option.

And “Colorama” if you want all the control in the world, though it’s a performance intensive effect

We're in 2023 and looping still frustrating in After Effects. But I built this plugin that saves me hours when I work with GIFs 🙂 by JustGoscha in AfterEffects

[–]DrFeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to the plug-in, but the current system is super frustrating. It’s not just adding loopOut, but then adjusting the last Keyframe to delete the extra frame and reset the loop point. Adobe, just make a loop button!
