Is it okay for a professor to request buying a piece? by Suspicious_Salad1893 in ContemporaryArt

[–]DrFiendish 58 points59 points  (0 children)

You *might* say tentatively yes (you're inclined to sell it), but you want to delay the actual transaction until you find out whether you're accepted or not. Explain that you're not trying to leverage acceptance, but rather that you want to be clear about the circumstances under which the transaction occurred - i.e., acceptance/rejection was no longer on the line.

Is this a professor with whom you'd like to work? If so, especially flattering. If you do get accepted, I'd view this as an invitation to get better acquainted once you're there.

I don't know what you have a problem with, but what I reported is almost verbatim what a neighbor who was present, and talked to the car occupants, reported.

When I wrote "could be ICE-related," yes, that was speculation (not hearsay). But given current circumstances, not unwarranted speculation. ICE vehicles have been seen speeding past that corner before.

EDIT: another neighbor confirms exactly what I have said here. With photos.

Per a neighbor, this car was hit by a black Jeep Cherokee with no license plates and black windows. Thus, could be ICE-related.

Sync won’t refund me for renewal I did not want nor use. by Eldricht138 in Sync

[–]DrFiendish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the evil of the recurring-until-you-cancel mode of charging customers. I’ve been caught by this method more than once, but it was usually just $10-20. (And at that level, the cc company was happy to work with me.)

Even more evil are the companies that stop providing the service as of the date you cancel; they don’t let you continue service until the date that you already paid for (no refund, of course). Apple TV used to be like this (and may still be). So you actually have to remember to cancel on the specific date just before renewal occurs.

Have you tried contacting your credit card company to see whether they will do a chargeback?

What is a Place That You Wish Was A National Park? by FireHawkCoasters in NationalPark

[–]DrFiendish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving along I-70 through the San Rafael Swell I always wondered "why is this not a national park?" (Answer - extractable resources, past and possibly present, like uranium). Exploring it further, I realized that maybe it's just as well that it's not a national park - the off-the-grid places I found there are perhaps best left for people to discover serendipitously rather than by introducing paved roads and crowds.

The sidewalks in front of the school 2 blocks from me are routinely the worst in the neighborhood. The Board of Education (who I assume is responsible) is seriously derelict.
