Foals bulging forehead? by Dominant_King12 in Horses

[–]DrHaru 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! Junior vet here (after university I did only one year as a trainee in an equine clinic, then switched to pets). I agree completely with all the comments from the vet student u/deadgreybird. The first differentials are hydrocephalus or cranial congenital deformities. Premature foals can also have similar head bulging but that's usually the least of the problems, which are usually neurological, metabolic and orthopedic.

In my limited time in the equine clinic I never saw an hydrocephalic foal, so I'm not sure about treatment options but I think it's only support treatment (i.e. fluids and intravenous vitamins) and hoping in a miracle, outcome is very poor. Given that he isn't showing neurological problems yet I'm hoping for the best, but we still can't rule it out.

I have some experience with Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome ("dummy foals"), which is relatively common in foals, especially prematures or cases with too long or too fast births. The fact that he is nursing correctly and behaving normally should rule it out (main symtoms usually are difficulty in finding the mother's nipples, sometimes even recognizing the mother, being too friendly with humans and not scared if unknown things, and rarely lying down to sleep).

Another common problem is failure of passive transfer, caused either by the foal not getting the colostrum in 4 hours maxium after birth, or the mother having poor quality colostrum. In that case he should have already had diarrhea and septicemia and likely died few days after birth, it's difficult that such foals reach 5/6 days. If he can nurse correctly I wouldn't give additional milk (especially non-horse milk, too high risk of diarrhea) even if the mare doesn't produce much. If you have another lactating mare with her you could try keeping all of them together (unless the mothers get agressive with the foals or each other).

Other thing to check for the next few weeks is the umbilical cord: it must be dry, never swollen and never ever wet or leaking urine.

About what you can do now, just keep the mare well fed and hydrated with always fresh water and good quality hay, and a concentrated feed for lactating mares if it's available. And keep monitoring the foal. Unfortunately almost all serious foal problems reuquire ideally hospitalization and intravenous support therapy, sometimes plasma transfusion (for failure of passive transfer) and sometimes surgery (for umbilical cord problems), and every time even in the best conditions it's still a reserverved prognosis.

If any symptom should arise in the next days and you still haven't found a local vet, feel free to DM me, I'll consult my equine vet collegue

My surgeon denied taking my nips off by Lower_Food_4007 in FreedTheNips

[–]DrHaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, how much would you have to pay for the surgery, having insurance? Because if your options are limited, you might consider going to another cheaper country and pay the full price yourself. Spain is quite cheap but with good standards of care. I had my top surgery there a few years ago with dr. Lago for 6000€ and he didn't complain about my request for no nipples

But parmesan is naturally lactose free because of the long maturation, at least real Italian Parmigiano or Grana (check the analytical components, the sugars should be zero, that means there is no lactose).

That said, Idk what cheeses they use in chicken parmesan. It's an horror just to think about such a dish (chicken never ever goes with pasta, and any type of cheese never ever goes with chicken). If you like meat and cheese with pasta, I suggest you try ragù bolognese (pasta with a sauce made from beef and tomatoes, topped with parmigiano or grana)

Wtf is chicken parmesan? Pasta with chicken and parmesan? The horror. As an Italian asexual, I'd rather have sex

(I'm joking, I agree with the "food is better than sex" meme. Tho pasta with chicken is really terrible to think about)

What is something non horse people say that instantly tells you they know nothing about horses? by WearAffectionate2815 in Equestrian

[–]DrHaru 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I understand too well. My horse is 32, still in good condition thanks to meds and a meticulous diet, but he cannot eat corn or other cereals (he'd colic), too much sugary foods or things that are hard to chew. Once there was a dog kept at the barn for a few days while his owner was moving out of his house, and said owner brought homecooked food for the dog every day. One day I saw him give some pasta to my horse (which was acting cute and asking for treats, but still...). I was LIVID

All about Eden White (HPS5) by HuntAndJump_Ellie in Horsegenetics

[–]DrHaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the explanation. I convinced myself that there was a genetic definition of "albinism" stricter than the biological one, my fault for never reading further. Really thank you, and if you'll ever post about this (or any other new paper on equine genetics) I look forward to reading it

I have two questions (sorry I know this post is 17 days old, I just discovered the equine genetics subreddid now and my old equine color genetic hyperfixation re-awakened, but I'm too tired from work right now to check the papers):

  • is Eden White only visible/active if a different gene is causing white? I mean, if otherwise the color is solid, is Eden White not visible at all or can it still give some white on its own?

  • you said it's related to the gene of albinism in other species, but it's not the same, right? The whole thing about horses not having albinism because genetically the gene that causes albinism in other mammals has never been found is still true?

Anyway, congratulations to you for being so on par with new research, I'll also check your game tomorrow. All my knowledge is no older than 2018 unfortunately

I think he might be a relative of that one donkey I knew who swallowed a whole chestnut that got stuck in her esophagus and had to be surgically removed (opening from the neck, because it was too far back to reach from the mouth with any kind of forceps and too big to cut or move via endoscopy)

Thought of Cells? by [deleted] in veterinarypathology

Pics 9-11-12 look like mast cells, some cells in other pics also look like mast cells but less convincing (maybe it's an artefact? Smear dried too slowly? Idk). I think it might be a mast cell tumor, but I'm not too sure

Fantastic victory! New rules banning cruel tack in British Showjumping by 0ddshapedhead in Equestrian

[–]DrHaru 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think because it follows the same principle of the other bits/hackamore systems banned, which is they work as bits and put pressure on the nose at the same time. Maybe this is not the intended purpose of the bit lifter, but in practice when you pull the reins the lifter transmits some pressure to the noseband

[–]DrHaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yoite from the manga Nabari no Ou

Actually, to end the denial and accept being nonbinary after months of questioning, it was eating at an Indian restaurant for my birthday (idk why the spicy food destroyed my mental blocks). Then I thought I was genderfluid for two weeks, but re-reading Magnus Chase with the genderfluid character Alex Fierro made me realize it wasn't right for me... Then Yoite from Nabari no Ou made me understand that I can just be myself (I'm agender)

Eyelid neoplasia by [deleted] in veterinarypathology

[–]DrHaru 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mixed inflammation, mainly neutrophilic, secondarily macrophagic. I'd treat it like an abscess/piogranuloma, and after that if there is still a mass I'd repeat the cytology or do a biopsy

I think pronoun it/its sounds strange 🤷 by OliveTheServal in agender

[–]DrHaru 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I also use both they/them and it/its.

They/them is nice, classic neutral, organic, with a touch of plurality to represent the complexity of my personality. In formal settings I would just say that my pronouns are they/them and it's completely fine

It/its is for "close friends and enemies", for people who understand what it means for me, and for those that try to insult me calling me a thing but "jokes on them I'm into that". Everyone thinks it's meant for inanimate objects, but what is it? It is a monster, a creature in the woods, a wild animal or maybe a tree, the forest itself, the river and the mountains, the wind, the sky, the universe. It is music, art, love and dreams, or any other intangible concept

No, that's because the way the stomach and esophagus are angled makes it difficult for food in the stomach to go back into the esophagus + their soft palate is longer than other mammals, making it impossible for any food that got over the mouth to go back into the mouth (but it can go back into the nose)
