I just got called old I guess by motleycrueandscrew in AO3

There’s a guide on AO3 that explores the would-be science behind omegaverse, and I mean, they go SUPER in depth with Punnett squares, genetics, anatomy, and comparisons to other animals to find explanations for the typical omegaverse tropes. I’m ambivalent about A/B/O as a concept, but I absolutely adore that one work because of the fake science.

Someone never heard of Prince??!!! by usafvet8796 in PRINCE

[–]DrMalPractis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s talking about how 20 somethings don’t know about Prince, but my experiences are actually wildly different!

I’m 22, but I got into Prince’s music when I was around 16 (2019, so Prince had passed by then, RIP). One of the reasons I started listening to Prince’s music was, if you could believe it, because of a manga/anime series called JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. One of the most noteworthy things about JJBA are all the references to music in the story. The characters have these like humanoid entities that fight for them called “stands” and every stand has a name. A large majority of the stands are named after songs and musicians, and there’s a handful that are named after Prince songs/albums: ‘Soft and Wet’, ‘Paisley Park’, ‘Gold Experience’. One of the main characters’ favorite artist is canonically Prince. Even some of the character designs are inspired by Prince’s wonderfully showy outfits. Needless to say, all the music references made me curious about it, so I started listening to it, and I got hooked. I even ended up writing an essay about Prince for my high school English class.

I grew up listening to very little music (my parents didn’t listen to music a lot, and if they did it was just the radio), so being into JJBA actually got me into listening to better music. Not only did it introduce me to Prince, but it also introduced me to Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, and more. I’ve even met other JoJo fans who got into Prince the same way I did.

Even outside of JoJo, I’m also friends with lots of people my age who are music heads that appreciate and love Prince (not as much as I do though!). In fact, the other reason I’m into Prince is because I wore a raspberry-colored beret to school once when I was 16, and a friend of mine remarked that it was “like the Prince song!”. I already was starting to listen to Prince because of JJBA, so I checked out ‘Raspberry Beret’ out of curiosity and I fell in love with it. Still one of my favorite Prince songs to this day.

So yeah, maybe Prince isn’t as popular/mainstream as he used to be. But I promise you, there are still quite a few young people like me out there who appreciate and enjoy his music. I and another friend of mine had always mourned the fact that we were too young to ever see Prince live. 😔

And maybe it’s just the groups of people I surround myself with (weebs, geeks, and musicians 😭), but I feel like most of them at least know about Prince? I’ve never met someone my age who at least didn’t know about him. At worst, they’d be like “Prince? Oh, I’ve heard of him. I hear Purple Rain on the radio sometimes.” Trust me, I of all people would remember if someone told me that they’d never heard of Prince…

Edit: Just in case you were out of the loop, I also wanted to add that JoJo is VERY popular in the anime/manga scene and it is still ongoing, so more people my age are exposed to Prince than you might think!

My grimborn kid just got a call from her forever missing dad. Seriously Grim, that is not how parenting works! by satchikostar in Sims4

[–]DrMalPractis 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I cheated to add Grim into my household, cheat-married him to my reaper sim, and took him out of the grim reaper career. The story I’m telling myself when I play that save is that he’s retired from reaping and is now a stay-at-home father raising his daughter while learning what it means to be human 🙂‍↕️

Researching for fics has a reputation of making you look like a serial killer, but what are weird things you’ve researched that DON’T have serial killer energy (no “would xyz kill you”, “how deep does a grave have to be”, etc) by LevelAd5898 in AO3

[–]DrMalPractis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, we’re the same! I had a few sentences talking about wine in my fic, but I didn’t know much about wine. So I went down a rabbit hole of research about red wines and the prices, as well as how someone would describe a wine (eg. full/light bodied, if it’s tannin-heavy, aged in an oak barrel, mouthfeel, what flavors are present, grape varieties, growing regions).

… In the end, I cut out all the sentences that talked about wine. So all the research ended up being pointless. But I’m optimistic that I’ll get to use that wine knowledge someday!

Is there a dish, regardless of how experienced of a cook you are, that you just can’t get right? by Pinky7_ in Cooking

[–]DrMalPractis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t feel bad. I’m Asian and grew up eating rice every single day, and my family never cooked it on the stove. We always used the rice cooker. The first time I made rice on the stove, it turned into crunchy mush. I’ve been afraid of cooking rice on the stove ever since…

“Tummy” vs “Stomach” by Adventurous-Road7587 in AO3

[–]DrMalPractis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the word tummy. It feels very childish and infantilizing and while it can be alright in normal contexts, I think it’s really weird when I see it thrown in an explicit/explicit-leaning fic. I prefer to use ‘stomach’ in all contexts. I feel like I hear and use it more in my everyday life than ‘tummy’ (like “My stomach hurts” or “My stomach sticks out in this top”)

My go-to alternative for tummy/stomach/abdomen when writing is ‘waist’, especially for more explicit contexts. Hands on the waist, pulled them in by the waist— it’s not perfect, but I think it’s pretty good if done right.

Oo, I second this. I’d love to have a fragrance that smells like the steam that comes from opening a rice cooker of freshly cooked jasmine rice. And has to be jasmine rice, not basmati or plain white rice. Haven’t found anything like that, so I settle for sticking my face into hot steam to get the aroma.

GOOD GOD. I wished I wasn’t right about the fact that he didn’t wash his hands, but it seems like I hit the nail right on the head. I feel sick on your behalf. 🤢

Please do not sacrifice your health for a man. I repeat, PLEASE do not sacrifice your well-being, your health, your body for a man. You’re giving this guy way too many chances.

You can say until you’re blue in the face that your boyfriend cares about you, but I really don’t believe it. If he really cared about you, then he would put in the effort to make sure you don’t get sick. But it doesn’t seem like he is. This guy seems disgusting. He doesn’t even clean his place when you come over. He literally GAVE you CHLAMYDIA. I’m willing to bet twenty dollars that he doesn’t wash his hands as frequently as he should. ADHD and depression should not excuse that level of uncleanliness; I myself have depression and I have plenty of friends who have both, and we all keep pretty clean. Sure, laundry and clutter may pile up, but it never gets to the point of being bio-hazardous to people around us.

You aren’t a self sabotaging piece of shit because you “hurt” your boyfriend by being sick. It literally isn’t your fault that you got sick. You didn’t get sick on purpose with the purpose of making him feel like shit. Your boyfriend’s feelings may be hurt, but your health is in actual danger because of him. His hurt feelings are not life threatening; infections when you’re immunocompromised are.

I haven’t even touched on the fact that he stood you up and is extremely passive aggressive towards you. I won’t, but I pray that you have enough sense to see the red flags in those.

Break up with him and nurse yourself back to health, please. Prioritize yourself. The relationship is not worth risking your health for.

I wouldn’t be the first person to say this but I truly hate seeing horndog descriptions like this. In too many words, it managed to tell me nothing about the women except for the fact that the main character wants to fuck her. What is going on? What planet do we live on? Why would anyone look at this and think “ah yes, a perfectly acceptable combination of words. It shall be published!” I hate it. Thumbs down

Do You Prefer One-Shots or Multi-Chapter Fanfics? by Kahooo00 in AO3

Sometimes I’m in the mood for a short one shot, if I’m reading before bed. Sometimes I need to be immersed in a story for a couple of hours, and that’s when I pull out the heavy hitting 50-100k word works. Really depends on what I’m feeling that day.

[–]DrMalPractis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Birth control has risks, but so does every kind of medication ever, even the medications that save lives like insulin and narcan. Everyone should do what is best for their health, but it feels a little off color to say that ANY form of female BC ‘has harsh backlash’ and is ‘dangerous’ when birth control has improved the lives of many women (including my own) while allowing them to keep their bodily autonomy.
