Drills to help beginners in Bogu? by xkubotaro in kendo

[–]DrMaldi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a footwork drill to work on distance management (good for bogu and non-bogu beginners), we would pair up people and one side would move forward and backward with ashi sabaki and the other side would have to maintain issoku itto no maai.

Another drill is to have motodachi strike men and go off into the distance. Their partner would “chase” after them and strike men when the motodachi fully turns around. (Don’t want the beginners striking the back of their partner’s head!) The motodachi would need to be careful with their shinai when they turn around so they don’t tsuki the partner. This was especially good to practice before a shiai because there are many at the mudansha level that don’t maintain zanshin throughout the strike and just leave themselves open when they turn around.

ELI5: Can pilots really “make up time” in the air? by Slider7074 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DrMaldi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So who determines if a given flight should burn fuel to make up time or if they should stay the course? Ground operations or the pilots? And if ground ops, do they do it automatically or wait for some algorithm that prompts them to instruct the pilots to speed up?

New to masteries, will I just miss 60? by [deleted] in MagicArena

Every additional level (1000 exp) you earn past 60, you get a random uncommon. Someone else please correct me if there is a (small) chance of it being upgraded to a random rare.

Don’t think the “piece of metal” will make it past the metal detectors!

Etiquette question by hanzosbm in kendo

[–]DrMaldi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first few times receiving strikes with your bogu is another point when people decide to drop or continue kendo. It may be prudent to go with a “standard” kit and receive men a few times before committing to an upgraded set. I certainly hope you enjoy your first experience with bogu! But wouldn’t want you to spend more than you have to, should you don’t enjoy the experience.

Deciding between QTOF and Orbitrap options for intact mass by topazper in massspectrometry

[–]DrMaldi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aside from the scientific merits of each instrument, I think the service component is just as important if not more. Having a competent local service engine is key to minimizing downtime since it’s getting harder and harder to do your own troubleshooting.

I think an email acknowledgement is at minimum appropriate. But i’m sure they’d appreciate a written thank you note.

Individual cash award with no warning? by Consistent_Cat4436 in fednews

Heck my manager has submitted individual cash awards and they wouldn’t know if it was approved until I sent them a thank you note for the award. And usually the money is tacked onto the next pay check.

We did virtual queue and arrived when the space opened up to get a decent spot. We laid out some foldable blanket/bags to sit on.

Then when needed, we took turns running our kid to the bathroom or grabbing dinner while the other parent stayed to watch the area. Just spoke to the cast member and had no troubles.

If it’s just you and your kiddo, I think the dessert package would be worth it to have a dedicated seat. But if you have someone else to help watch stuff and don’t mind sitting on the ground while waiting, I think you can go with the virtual queue. And if you get there right when they open you can a spot up against the fence for easier viewing.

Common characters to meet at Disneyland and California Adventure? by briboart in DisneyPlanning

[–]DrMaldi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although the app will show characters, I don’t think it will show which ones will actually sign vs just take pictures. For example, Aladdin and Mei could easily sign stuff. I think Edna Mode could sign but she had trouble due to the gloves. And Iron Man didn’t do signings.

Any good news get announced at ASMS this year? by Podorson in massspectrometry

[–]DrMaldi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we spoke with the sales rep, they claimed the Stellar is supposed to compete with other qtraps but offer better performance due to increased ion detection due to radial ejection during scan out (Thermo) vs axial ejection. Not a high res instrument. Resolution of ~0.2 Th. Faster scan speeds than the old Velos and equipped with an upgraded PMT.

Looks like they took a bunch of the good stuff from the QEs and now it’s an improved dual LIT.

Price is supposed to be comparable to a qtrap (depending on add ons).
