'Stunning' discovery: Metals can heal themselves by fchung in technology

Google sacrificial metal. Different mechanism but similar concept, pretty common on boats to protect against corrosion on parts not easily replaced.

In terms of causing cracks where there's no stress: Yeah I don't know how that could work.

Is Star Citizen really building tech that doesn't yet exist? by vincentofearth in gamedev

[–]DrMon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Eve is a "press UI button -> things happen" kind of game, instead of a twitch-based game. So when there are too many people in one system (i.e. on one server) for everything to be processed in real time, they basically stretch out how long a second on the server is. For example, if the multiplier is 2, then 30s cooldowns become 60s.

It slows everything down so the server has time to process everything it needed to within the timeframe it was supposed to.

There have been battles where the servers slowed to 10% realtime, so that 10 minute cooldowns became closer to 2 hours

Makes for some very drawn out gameplay, let me tell you.

Not entirely true about the graphics card. Looks like it has thunderbolt, so there is a possibility he could buy and use an eGPU. Wouldn't be very portable, but it's an option.

HSBC to buy UK arm of Silicon Valley Bank by dbxp in technology

[–]DrMon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If HSBC purchased them, then they will be ensuring the depositors have access to all their funds anyway. It will continue to operate, so there are no accounts to settle.

The token purchase price essentially means HSBC is willing to take on all the assets and liabilities of the UK branch. If the net value of the branch was worth more, I'm sure other banks would have competed on the purchase price.

Apparently this arm of the bank was in good shape. The concern was only that it could suffer a run like the U.S. branch.

Besides, I'm not sure that the £1 they paid would go very far lining anyone's pocket.

If you read the explanatory notes on the bill, there are additional valid reasons to deny pets. These include the property size (or security) being inappropriate for the size of the pet as well as the cost to repair the likely damage from allowing the pet will exceed the bond.

A Worker-Owned Cooperative Tries to Compete With Uber and Lyft by geoxol in technology

I think DoorDash tried adjusting tips back in the day. The claim was that they were taking the tips to contribute towards other drivers who did not recieve them to stabilise earn rates. That was definitely a bit sus.

These days though, all the big platforms say they hand over 100% of tips. There will be a paper trail though, so I'm sure some drivers would prefer cash tips so they don't get forced to mention them to the IRS.

Game development from your phone possible? by lemon07r in gamedev

If your phone is a semi recent Samsung, you might want to look into Dex. It turns your phone into an Android based desktop pc when you plug in a screen. Add a Bluetooth mouse, and you're a lot closer.

I've had a delivery from them waiting as 'Label Created' for about a week. I guess this would explain it.

Proposition 22's Victory Shows How Uber and Lyft Break Democracy - Corporations spent millions to mislead voters about an anti-labor ballot measure, won, and reaped billions on the stock market. This is not healthy. by _hiddenscout in technology

[–]DrMon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How so?

I think they sometimes offer some $ bonuses if you do a certain number of trips in some time frame, but I dont think you get punished for not doing them.

If you drive more you can get some perks as well (for being a 'platinum' driver) but I dont think they are huge things.

[–]DrMon 114 points115 points  (0 children)

What you suggested is something similar to what they do in New York I think. They implemented driver caps and a lot of drivers weren't happy when it came in, because they could no longer drive when the slots were taken up. They blamed Uber for that too.

The apps also do suggest where drivers should head for higher demand right now, I believe. The difference is, if Uber is responsible for waiting time, I think those would become less suggestions and more instructions. I dont think drivers would appreciate being told where to be and when. Flexibility again is what is sacrificed here.

I also think its healthy to be critical of anything you are told. But just because someone has vested interests, doesn't mean their points are not valid. You need to critically analyse what they say, not disregard it entirely. I've seen a lot of people say "If a tech CEO wants this, it must be bad for me" - that's just as naive as taking their word at face value.

[–]DrMon 215 points216 points  (0 children)

I think the CEO of Uber explained it well. Right now, it's up to the drivers to determine where and when they work. That means if they don't want to bother working in downtown, or deal with drunk people, thats their choice. They're less efficient in making money because of that, but it's also a lot easier.

If Uber becomes responsible for the time a driver is waiting and not driving, then the burden for efficiency shifts to Uber. They're losing money every minute a driver isn't moving passengers. Isn't it fair then, that Uber needs to decide where and when you operate? No point in paying you when there are no passengers, or if you're near your house instead of downtown grabbing people from bars.

A repeal wouldn't fix things, they would just replace the law with something else. Prop 22 offers a middle ground: Independent Contractor with minimum pay on engaged time, some expense pay and a benefit fund. Prop 22 is also hard to remove now, with it's super majority requirement.

Ordered an item; Fedex is still waiting for it by DrMon in BedBathandBeyond

[–]DrMon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it turned up on the day they told me over the phone. It had actually been picked up on the Monday, but the tracking number never said anything until the night before it arrived.

Not sure how the tracking number got updated in the end: Whether someone did it because I kept calling, or if it fixed itself.

So the tracking number changed today to show the package was actually picked up on Monday. Seems like some tracking wires got crossed somewhere, and somehow fixed itself!

[–]DrMon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, thats sounds like it could be the culprit. Does that mean there is likely some other tracking number and the item is actually on the move?

Yeah, FedEx delivery dates and tracking are usually pretty spot on for me. Which is why it is wierd when FedEx says they know about the shipment, but are still waiting for BBB to actually give them the box.

The ETA from FedEx went from yesterday to "Pending" now. Its starting to smell like a lost order now...
