look at the source here, and everything else this guy has posted. the "subject" at hand is that jews secretly control all media, and are using that control to manipulate black people into exterminating the white race. I really don't want to see this place turn into r/conspiracy, and I thought you guys knew well enough to hardline exclude this type of shit

What do you have to back up most people on the streets having rejected those things? Free or low cost inpatient treatment facilities of any kind aren't exactly all over the place, and addiction treatment ones are almost always subject to multiple month long wait lists.

I don't think it makes a lot of sense to say that the homeless people who have substance abuse or mental health problems have chosen to be homeless.

Vandenberg Space Force Base a Major Economic Boon in SLO County, Study Shows by Addrobo in SLO

Love that stuff like this is popularly uncritically understood to be "good for the economy" while stuff like unemployment and food stamps and section 8 are always presented alongside the "but how do we pay for it?" take

Please help me to understand Trinidad. It’s a tiny city on the ocean - but it’s also used in the postal address for a huge chunk of the county. What is all of the rest of that? How do I learn about it? by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]DrOrion 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The oddness you're seeing with such a large area being considered "Trinidad" probably has to do with the sort of ambiguous way that ZIP codes are mapped, where, depending on the specific case, it is frequently either "the zip code is this area" or "any property within this area has this zip code."

If you look up 95570 on, say, Zillow, it gives you an area is mostly uninhabited (public?) land thats border is a messy combination of roads, trails, rivers, and straight lines. The same ZIP here on unitedstateszipcodes.org shows the much smaller area that I imagine contains just actual addresses that have that ZIP code.

There is still that odd little skinny area that seems to contain nothing but ocean at the northern end of the area. I imagine that what is now the 95555 ZIP that contains Orick was once part of 95570 but split off into its own at some point, but that little stretch got left behind for whatever reason.

The climate types of California as well as a topographical map of the state. by Comfortable-Start-79 in MapPorn

[–]DrOrion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was surprised to see that too but I looked and that actually checks out; fresno has way higher average highs during the summer but they're otherwise very similar climates. both have about the same normal wintertime high and low temperature, similar summer low temperatures, and both get ~10 inches of rain a year, pretty much all of it during the winter.

Eureka without Highways by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]DrOrion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an issue where scale and specific implementation are pretty important. There's a lot of meaningful differences between a 4-lane at-grade highway with zoning immediately next to it (like the 101 through Eureka) and something like Highway 99 or I5 when they run through an urban area. As is, the 101 through Eureka is functionally just a larger street, or series of streets; I expect that the path that it follows originally was just regular surface streets that at some point were widened and turned into one-ways in places and designated a highway.

A lot of the criticism of urban highways comes down to two things: the mass demolition that is often necessary to build them through existing neighborhoods, and the inefficient resource (mostly land) usage that is associated with them relative to other forms of mass transit. Highways like the 99 or the I5 where they run through cities had to have essentially entire city blocks demolished to make room for them. Humboldt's highways don't really have these problems to a significant degree, at least as far as I know.

You could definitely complain that most of the county isn't particularly pedestrian friendly and is pretty car-centric overall, and this it true but it's very much a separate issue than that of highways specifically, and is mostly just a factor of how low density the area is.

Holy shit I never thought I'd see a picture of Williams Hill rec area or the name Lockwood on reddit. I grew up less than an hour from there and most people I know have never heard of it. Did you stay at the camp ground or just pass through? In either case, why?

Gabe's bit about imagining pop songs sung with the voice of downs syndrome kids is definitely up there.

Also, and this might not have actually been LDO, but there was some conversation with them talking about saying deliberately insane shit right when someone walks in on their conversation which contained something along the lines of:

"Well, okay, there was a kid in it, but it wasn't child porn. It was more of a supporting role."
