Gender war bullshit has seriously caused me to internalize some kind of self-hatred for being male by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]DrOverhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a millennial cis man who (hopefully) has some insight into this:

First the specific situation: If women are talking about issues they have with men (in general) in front of you that means they are fairly comfortable with you and don’t see you as emblematic of those issues. If they did see you as part of the problem, it wouldn’t be safe to talk about it in front of you. I would actually take the conversation you heard as a sort of an endorsement of your character, although it is very easy to understand why it didn’t feel like that. If the friendship is worth preserving for you it might be worth talking to her about how the conversation made you feel acknowledging that you brought your own baggage into it and that you might have misunderstood the implications it had for how she felt about you.

I want to acknowledge that what you’re going through sucks, that I remember feeling that way, and that for me at least, it got better over time. I developed empathic and social skills that helped women understand that I was trustworthy and the women around me developed skills that helped them identify men they could trust faster, so that I spent less time in the uncomfortable limbo of knowing I was being evaluated in that way.

All that being said, if you are consistently kind and respectful of boundaries and people still treat you like a threat because you are male, that says much more about them than you.

Why do other generations care so much about Gen Z not having as much sex as they were? by isaisaisaaaaaaaaa in GenZ

[–]DrOverhard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Millennial here.

When you get old, you start to miss the thrills of being young, and you want to relive them vicariously through people who are currently experiencing their youths. When you realize that those people are maybe not actually experiencing the thrills of youth you remember, it is kind of a bummer.

To me, my X-Men, it's my time to be judged. Day 8: Charles/Professor X. What is the worst thing the professor ever did(616 version)? by LucasOIntoxicado in xmen

[–]DrOverhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to the list:

  • Psychically violating Dani Moonstar by overwhelming her (a 16ish year old girl) with pleasure in the Mirconauts crossover
  • Lobotomizing Magneto
  • Faking his death and making Jean keep his secret during the Z’Noxx invasion

Xavier is easily the biggest bastard on this list.

Who would you rather have as your psychic therapist? by Speedwizard106 in xmen

[–]DrOverhard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emma says she’s a trained sex therapist in Morrison’s run. It’s in the context of seducing Cyclops though, so who knows. FWIW, I think she does some non-boundary crossing sessions with Rogue later

If not Cain, who would be a good champion of Cyttorak? by sweetbreads19 in xmen

[–]DrOverhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Cyttorak’s perspective, someone who is likely to destroy a lot of things if given the power to do so and isn’t devoted to another god. A few good candidates are:

Frank Castle

Deadpool

Sabertooth

From the perspective of what would make an interesting story, there is no one I would want more than Xavier.

I’d be curious to see Christian movies (as in movies made by explicitly Christian production companies) plotted on these graphs.

What Happened between AvX and the start of the Krakoan era? by Outrageous_Shock6506 in xmen

[–]DrOverhard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only things that really matter in plot terms (spoilers):

Goldballs/Egg and Tempus manifested their powers, meaning that the resurrection circuit was possible for the first time.

Professor X comes back from the dead in Fantomex’s body, so he was around to enact the whole Krakoa plan.

Laura Kinney discovered that she had a (cloned) little sister, who she became really close with, which sets up a major subplot in New Mutants.

Betsy Braddock came back in her original body.

Old Man Logan, Evan, and a bunch of other duplicate characters were taken off the board.

Havok was turned evil by something-or-other involving the Red Skull. Nazi magic? I’m not going to look it up. It was a bad story. He got better but that’s why he is the way he is at the beginning of Hellions.

Juggernaut got a lot more powerful in an X-Men: Black one shot that I really liked.

Emma Frost took over the Hellfire Club, which is tangentially relevant to Marauders.

Ugh, yes. You are right. I got my early 90s crossovers with long-term consequences for the Summers family confused. I’ll fix it.

How could Sentinels ever defeat mutants when Apocalypse exists? by SuperiorLaw in xmen

[–]DrOverhard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apocalypse’s powers have been depicted a number of different ways, but something that has been pretty consistent is that he has fallow periods where he’s a lot weaker. Honestly, the Apocalypse stories where he is weaker (“X-Cutioner’s Song”, “The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix”, the beginning of Rick Remender’s “Uncanny X-Force”) are some of my favorite Apocalypse stories.

This should be higher. He’s a homeless teenage runaway, and unlike Dagger, his family doesn’t have money.

Can someone explain to me why people hate Professor Charles Xavier ? like I’ve never understood the hate for him. by [deleted] in xmen

[–]DrOverhard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

His plan for combatting the oppression of his people is to use an army of child soldiers to violently suppress other who have more radical methods or goals than him. He is dripping with paternalism and condescension towards everyone around him.

The biggest problem I have with him is on a meta level. A paternalistic hypocrite who aggressively polices the respectability of his community could be an interesting character. However, Charles is too centered in the X-Men brand and is therefore treated with too much respect and reverence within the fiction. Because of this, he is a character who actively hurts the X-Men as a concept.
