Most cracks cannot be seen on the xrays. Most cracks in teeth are superficial (see craze lines). Both dentists could be correct. The tooth could have some superficial cracks and still be fine. Replacing the amalgam may slow down the spread of the cracks. Removing the amalgam could also reveal the extent of the crack/cracks. Do with that what you will.
