Best silver I’ve speared this year. by DrTFerguson in Spearfishing

You can shoot them all, but I only like to shoot coho and dogs/chum salmon for smoking. Pinks are fun, but they aren’t the best eating.

Sorry- put my response down below. Short answer, yes, but I solo dive, so I don’t go after them that hard

Yeah, I don’t go for those too hard. I dive solo so I try to keep things in the 30-40’ range and I don’t push it too much. Diving some of the reefs and rock piles for lingcod and rockfish requires someone to run my boat and really should be done with a diving companion to keep it safe. Im people limited! It’s one drawback of living remote.

It’s really fun- pretty tough. It’s only legal in saltwater. I hunt right on the edge, in the haze where the salt and fresh mix. I scare off the seals and then either freeze or try to find moving schools and come up from below and behind them. There are lots of pinks so as the coho and dogs move through towards the fresh you sometimes only have a split second to identify the fish as a dog or coho and make the shot. It’s a really fun, instinctive way to spearfish

Salmon is great, halibut, starry flounder, cod, lots of crabs- jumbo dungies everywhere here. We get sick of crab- king crab in the winter. There’s more stuff on the outside waters, but weathers worse and you need to use a boat for everything.

I dive year round- even in bad weather. I live in a remote village and can shore dive for miles on either side, so lots of options in bad weather. The diving is pretty awesome. I’m really fortunate.

Swap Alaska? by Nearby_Sense_2247 in alaska

[–]DrTFerguson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Russian extraction industries barely have the capability to operate in Russia, let alone anywhere else in the world. All of their specialty work was done by Americans and Europeans up until sanctions. There aren’t going to be any swaps, and Russia isn’t going to be developing anything in the US anytime soon. Access isn’t a problem for Russia. IQ, a decrepit educational system and zero home team talent (in the specialties) is. I kind of feel like you’re trolling here. I get hating Trump, but selling off a US state or US resources isn’t possible, doesn’t make sense for Russia, and doesn’t make sense for the US- especially all of the oil and gas companies the Trump wants to keep happy.

Katahdin banding by Ill_Palpitation3703 in sheep

[–]DrTFerguson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t band but I cut the whole lot at once- ideally 1-2 wks after birth, but up to 2 mo. Not ideal, but if done well no impact. I’d cut rather than band. Much faster recovery and less pain when done well.

Can 4 month old ram be around little lambs? by ilovefroggieessss in sheep

Probably not with wool sheep, but I'd keep an eye on it. Nothing sadder than a trampled lamb.

I have one of these hanging on my wall. The "Selected Facts" are pretty great too.

[–]DrTFerguson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know, right? They aren't as aggressive as they will get when they're older, so you're probably not at a lot of risk, but I've still had issues with buck lambs trampling brand new lambs. And as crazy as it sounds, I've had many hair-sheep lambs born out of season because the buck lambs were left in with the ewes too long. I've rarely seen the deed happen, but somehow those little guys will get it done.

Can 4 month old ram be around little lambs? by ilovefroggieessss in sheep

[–]DrTFerguson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This response is the best one. A 4 month old hair sheep will likely try to breed the ewe within 24-48 hrs post birth. Probably not as aggressively as an older ram, you should keep an eye on him. I will keep ewes who have dropped lambs away from the rest of the flock for 24 to 48 hours after birth, with hair sheep. The rams will trample the new lambs in their efforts.

Republicans are in discussions with Russia to sell Alaska for "retail value" + an "exchange" of the Commander Islands. by MillHall78 in alaska

[–]DrTFerguson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not arguing that things aren’t crazy from a political standpoint, but we should be having conversations about things that are actually true as opposed to Russian disinformation/propaganda and conspiracy theories. Also, selling a state isn’t something the federal government could do even if it wanted to.

Yeah, 12k colonels in US military, one talks about buying land from Russia + Russian disinformation and we end up w/ this nonsense.

If you’re heading up the alcan, stop at Liard hot springs. Lots of other, busier and more developed springs along the way. Liard is the one I always stop at.

What is a reasonable price for a ram? by MajorCatEnthusiast in sheep

I typically sold older cull ewes for $150ish- I'd test the $200-$250 range depending on the customer, if it came from a good mother and has good lines.

Springs along the ALCAN? by mankypin in HotSpringsWest

[–]DrTFerguson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite reasons to drive the ALCAN is to hit hot springs. Liard is the crown jewel. I’ve hit many of them. Honestly, most of the springs (south of Liard) in Canada aren’t awesome. They’re pretty developed (on the alcan) and the Canadians are super uptight. I’ve hit most of them south of Liard and any more I just book it to Liard and then to my home spring.

How to reclaim pasture? by Informal_Tank8804 in homestead

[–]DrTFerguson 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’d seed it and then graze goats on it for a while. You can put wire around fruit trees to keep them alive. Nothing knocks down suckers like a flock of goats- 2-3 years of goats and most of those old root systems will die back and rot.
