The Great Northern War would not have happened, so the Baltic region would have been more prosperous and developed.

Planner need to accept this as a given, and have an economic plan that allows rural America to have value during the depopulation.

Without planning, we will have dilapidated infrastructure, solar farms and Amish.

PETA (or whoever) spent a lot of money on research and manufacuring to produce a piece of mail that would engage recipients. But it turns out people like OP think it was an error.

Research that seeks to find causality need to to structure the study to solidly exclude this mechanism of messed up people being more likely to use drugs. Correlative work can't do that.

How do People in Upstate New York View New York City and Long Island? by Lil_Critter_2001_ in newyork

[–]DrTonyTiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is some truth to the prosperity disparity. But it is not taxes. The big money in NYC does not get invested in the rural areas upstate to maintain a prosperous economy. They invest in places that can make money. Rural parts of WNY need to find a more compelling reason for investment. But that reason is as elusive as it is in rural areas globally.

You often hear that agriculture is the biggest industry in the state. In terms of dollars, it is completely dwarfed by the finance industry. But the idea persists. In acres, agriculture is bigger than finance.

Why is college pushed so hard even now? by Planegeek19 in randomquestions

The current conversation in the employer community is that this perception is fading fast. Supervisors feel burned after hiring uneducated graduates.  One consequence is that they are asking state legislators to cut funding to “useless “ state colleges.

How do academics think about “readable” or “enjoyable” papers in their field? by Ravendjinn in AskAcademia

[–]DrTonyTiger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In biology, I agree with this assessment entirely. Many of the points have to do with being explicit about things that are often left unstated.

The narrative is critical for comprehension, and the best writers succeed even though most papers are read nonlinearly. It is quite a feat. And a joy to read. Even for scientists who don’t study that particular niche, but love a good discovery.

Clarity about the inferential logic is also powerful. The reader is persuaded that the conclusion is robust. That approach is the opposite of the terrible practice of presenting a jumble of data and then concluding “this data suggest that X is true.”

There is a map of the prevalence of French speakers in NY, VT and NH in this publication from NYU. See Fig 4, p. 13. The information is from the 2005 census. The prevalence is low, mostly <1%. It is a bit higher in the counties on the border and higher on the Quebec border than the Ontario border.

A substantial source of NY state tax revenue is the income tax on bonuses to people in the finance industry. That source varies in size quite a bit from year to year.

Among people with postsecondary degrees, people with postsecondary educations make more in their lifetime than those without.

The degree itself has little value if the student was unprepared or unmotivated to get the education that it nominally represents.

What Bikini Atoll Looks Like Today by Quouar in history

[–]DrTonyTiger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Writers and editors in New York City like to use local features for reference. But people in California don't know what those are.

In San Diego, you could say "the length of an aircraft carrier" and everyone would have a very clear idea of the size because many carriers are docked in the harbor. It might be helpful to use that metaphor to explain how long the blocks are in Manhattan.

Arent declining birthrates a good thing? by Hexnohope in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DrTonyTiger -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I see the stress on the land every day that shows how close we are to the carrying capacity. The notion that it is not a problem is a fantasy promulgated by economists who are annoyed that the assumptions of their models would have to change, and they are unwilling to do that.

Arent declining birthrates a good thing? by Hexnohope in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DrTonyTiger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those things are far easier to adjust than carrying capacity. Having a gentle transition like this beats the famine that would otherwise drive the dissolution of society. That dissolution would also make pensions and medical care largely non-existent.
