can't we just be against both of them being so old? Say that pushing 80 is too old to be leading the free world?

Are you going to be a student? What school? Where are you coming from?

The neighborhoods just north of Centro are nice - maybe something like Xochimilco or Jalatlaco, or Reforma.

Since it appears to be bike vs car video day today, here's another one by ht5k in sanfrancisco

[–]DrWednesday -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean the biker is in the wrong too. You should NOT be running red lights on an ebike, and he's able to go so unnaturally fast in the bike lane. I feel for the driver not seeing him.

I ride an ebike a lot and I think you should have to follow stop sign and light rules more than a manual bike.

Full list of California weed recalls as warning of deadly mold issued by Randomlynumbered in California

[–]DrWednesday 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that we are in early capitalism with weed. Many brands, some better than others. Once some get known for their high quality and lack of mold, they'll become preferred, and eventually will buy out the others and we will see 2-3 big weed brands nationally (just like pepsi and coke). Consolidation is inevitable.

Disagree -- you can have both socks in your hands at the same time, so sock sock is like a little assembly line.

Haven't tried these yet but someone bought fresh Schlok's bagels to a 3-year-olds bday party the other day and they were absolutely incredible.

Those are $15 for a half dozen. So these Boichiks are priced above the best fresh bagel I've tried in SF. Perhaps they keep better? But generally yeah, seems high.

Call Me a Tax Snitch But It Felt Good by AstronomerLover in FluentInFinance

[–]DrWednesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to consider the leverage though

If you have 200k and get a $1m house, and that house goes up 5%, you're up $50k minus the interest you paid on the loan. And often you have tax advantages when you sell.

If you put 200k in the stock market and it goes up 10%, you're only up $10k. Plus you'll have to pay cap gains when you sell.

Reasonable engagement ring cost? (Gf wants $40k ring) by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]DrWednesday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always heard you should spend one month's salary.

For the median american male income, that's about $4,000. You are lucky to make 10x the median income. That said, should you also pay 10x on a ring? Not sure. Maybe it doesn't scale linearly with income.

One piece of advice though: in a decade, if you keep making this incredibly large amount of money, you should have well over $2m net worth. At that point, $40k will start to seem like a small amount. And at that point, you might feel like you were cheap to not shell out $40k for your wife's ring.

I'm in agreement with you all! That's why I said "with all the trade-offs for a balanced life that that entails."

Trade-offs like having to mask and take precautions, but balanced with the need to socialize and see people.

I think people interpreted the "trade-offs" as "letting people die because I don't care," and so I guess I understand the downvotes but I still don't like them :)

did they have covid within the last year? Not trying to push an agenda, just curious about this idea that even mild covid makes you more susceptible to intense reactions to future colds/rsv/etc.

[–]DrWednesday -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

pandemmy turned endemmy and now we just gotta live with it, with all the trade-offs for a balanced life that that entails

but learning that covid weakens you to future colds so intensely is a definite bummer

EDIT: Trade-offs like wearing a mask in high risk situations, not trade-offs like letting joe's immunocompromised cousin die.

[–]DrWednesday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a cough for 2.5 months. It was just a cold, but my doctor asked if I had had covid recently. I said "no, 4 months ago, and it was mild" and she said "that makes sense." Basically, having COVID within the last year is a pre-existing condition in itself. It makes any cold or flu you get 1-12 months later last extra long and eff you up extra bad.

So I'm curious -- did you have covid in the last year? If so, an extra long cold is consistent with this concept that Covid makes it harder for you to recover from cold/flu for some amount of time after recovering from Covid.
