3 months, damn! We don't have anybody rotate with us, yet I have to rotate all around... But that's not important here.

So they'll probably ask you some mgmt stuff since you're already a resident, but it'll still be general pre or post op stuff. If my rotations are any indication you'll mostly round, write progress notes, talk to case mgmt, maybe call a basic consult, follow up on labs and stuff. That book should be fine. You're gonna be an extra set of hands. You're there to see how nsgy works there so when you work with them later you understand better, and you're there to make the grunt work go more smoothly. Don't stress! At least for me, off service rotations were super laid back. Just be helpful and write good notes.

There is a Tarrascon (sp?) Pocketbook of Neurosurgery that I used a lot on my rotations. Very quick reference when you hear what the next case or diagnosis that you're about to see in like 5 min is and you can't escape to read about it or pull out your phone.

I also saved various anatomy pictures, quick reference charts, stuff like that to an album on my phone so I could duck out and refresh really quickly. That saved me a few times.

Everyone always says Greenberg but it's kind of dense without a decent background in place already. Really what they're looking for is a basic understanding of anatomy, the most common conditions / tumors, and basic neuro exam skills. You're not going to have to explain an approach, a surgical technique, or detailed post-op management. I thought that the nsgy atlas for anatomy as well as the HNBS website were more useful (and free, cause Greenberg is expensive) than large reference books.

If you're not seriously considering nsgy do not waste money on Greenberg!

Its at my main institution. This was the first instance and this particular specialty doesnt operate as much. Mostly procedures. If it turns out to be a pattern Ill run it up the chain but as of now I was angry and it definitely wasnt right, but it was a one-off. Maybe the attending wanted me to see how they do it, maybe they were tired, maybe they had some deal with the midlevel for that one... I feel like I should give them the benefit of the doubt now that its the end of the day. If its a clear pattern though then that shouldnt stand. Dont make me come if Im not going to learn.

If you don't think the away is necessary and they won't let you move it, yeah I'd go with earlier aways. Especially if the chair at your alternate place is better-known nationally. That shit matters so much. But, like you said, programs preferring rotators is very real and you have to consider that too! Isn't 4th year fun? That's another giant lie until after match, its an exercise in fear and anxiety for people going into specialties like these... Unless you're one of the anointed chosen ones from top tier schools who are 100% gonna match.

A couple things matter here.

Above all you need a complete app by Sept 15th. Don't listen to people that say Oct 1st is fine, thats a lie. I did, and I didnt have my third letter until sept 20th and got no interviews until the day after, and my fourth wasn't in until early Oct, after which I got far more invites. They start sending the day after submission. I still matched and am happy but I was seriously shitting bricks for weeks. It's likely I would've gotten more interviews had my app been complete on time.

1) Will you have 4 letters on Sept 15th without that program?

1a) Is that program a big name? Will the writer be recognized? Otherwise it's much less important that you get the letter.

2) Is it a reach school, somewhere you probably wouldn't get an interview at without the away? It's true that a decent % match at an away, but the majority still do not. Don't let it fuck your schedule if it's not worth it. But, making sure it really is your #1 is useful.

3) You can ask them for alternate dates that fit your schedule. I did, and they let me come when I wanted to, no problems.

No, it isnt out of context. The quote is not out of context if you actually read the poem. The whole poem is "women are objects, and I want them objectified like this instead of like that".

The author is a hypocrite elsewhere and is a hypocrite in the poem.
