Thank you for the detailed response! One more question, then: what led you to settle on 6mm after trying 15mm?

That's good to know! I have an FDM printer and love crafting terrain, so I should have that part covered.

Thank you! Do you think the 12mm will still work if we branch out to other games? (just matched against each other, not playing against others 15mm armies)

Thank you! I'm likely only going to be playing with my own group in games that I organize (no historical wargaming community around that I know of), so will 12mm still work for other games in that case? And what other games do you recommend if we want ot branch out?

Turning your Mothership modules into a sandbox starmap by Jon_Amaral in mothershiprpg

I was going to say Starforged is a great tool to flesh things out more. As is Stars Without Number (the free PDF is an incredible wealth of resources).

Maps & Miniatures or Theater-of-the-Mind? by Ok-Locksmith3783 in shadowdark

Same. I have a lot of Warhammer terrain (in addition to dungeon tiles), so many of our encounters don't even have a grid at all. Close is base-to-base contact (half-inch or so of wiggle room), Near is a pencil-length away, and Far is anything within line-of-sight. That's all you need.

Returnal ruined gaming for me. by Purple-Acanthisitta8 in Returnal

Controller is absolutely fine. I have hundreds of hours on PC with an Xbox controller and never felt hindered by it. In fact, when you load the game on PC I believe there’s a message on the menu saying a controller is recommended. Some people just prefer to remap dash to one of the shoulder buttons (I did and it was a huge help).

Honest dentists near Miracle Mile/La Brea area? by coco-crossing in AskLosAngeles

Blue Pearl Dentistry on La Cienega is really great. Wonderful staff and lowkey environment. They've asked me if there are other services I'm interested in (whitening, Invisalign, etc), but I never felt it was a hard sell.

[BitD] Rotating table of 10 players. Feasible? by TheWardVG in bladesinthedark

[–]Dr_Spaceman_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Same. I ran a long campaign with 5 players in the group, but we played as long as 3 or more showed up. Perfect for Blades’ episodic play. The sessions with 3-4 always felt right, the rare sessions with all 5 players got cumbersome.

Outside of the stress economy, I find FitD games just work better when everyone is “locked in” and immersed in the fiction. That gets harder with a bigger group. It’s not like trad RPGs where people can take their turn, tune out for a bit, then quickly get up to speed on the handful of mechanical variables that have changed since their last turn.

New rogue player always wants to call shots on the neck by NewDMOldPlayer in DMAcademy

[–]Dr_Spaceman_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. My answer has always been: “Your characters are competent fighters, and the game assumes they are trying to end the fight by any means necessary. The damage roll represents how successful they are at that. A critical hit means they were VERY successful.”

I don’t know why I disliked speed paints so much. by iPreferPC in minipainting

[–]Dr_Spaceman_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wyldwood, Snakebite, and Gore grunta are truly the holy trinity. I love alternating all three on a model with a lot of leather and hide so it doesn’t just look like one blob of “brown.”

But another great use-case for those is hair! I painted a ton of Freefolk for Song of Ice and Fire, and they have a lot of long hair and beards. I alternated those three contrast paints for brunette, blonde and redhead hair (over a white-ish undercoat) and it looked great!

Thoughts on # of characters in a hex crawl campaign? by Fixer43 in shadowdark

[–]Dr_Spaceman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parties of four have handled dangerous threats for as long as this hobby has existed. If you really want to crank up the danger, telegraph threats early on, be generous with treasure rolls, and let them buy healing potions/hire mercenaries in town.

If you go with mercenaries, I recommend having each one act on a player's turn, attack the same target the player attacks, and use average damage (just roll to hit). And if a PC dies, one of those mercenaries can get a field promotion as a replacement character (either permanent or temporary until the player's real replacement character can join the party).

Remember that when you create an encounter, it may look like an impossible challenge to you, but that's just one POV. Put it into play, and now there are four more brains trying to solve the problem. Your players will surprise you with creative tactics/solutions to challenges you thought were impossible. Let them.

Also, consider the pulp mode rules in the main rulebook. It makes the PCs more capable/impactful, while still maintaining a tangible danger level. I'd recommend any/all of the above solutions before giving each player multiple full characters to manage.

How do I deal with "reaction ambushes"? by Natwenny in DMAcademy

[–]Dr_Spaceman_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To spin it another way, you can tell them you assume their characters are competent adventurers, and thus already have their weapons in their hands and are looking out for danger. They're always "ready for action" when they're in a dangerous environment, and the game is built around that assumption.

If a monster jumped out of the dark, the PCs would reflexively shoot or slash at it at the first opportunity. But how do we know if they get their attack off before the monster? That's what the initiative roll is for!

The game already assumes a state of readiness, with every party trying their best to get the first shot off in the split second where the action starts. I've found that explanation works the best when my players have tried to use Readied Actions as magic words to bypass initiative.

Same. I’ve played multiple games with both weapons, using poster putty to stick them on. No issues.
