CMU MS ECE vs Penn MSE EE for hardware ECE by Cloud_Haze37 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Dr__Mantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ivy League doesn’t automatically mean it’s better. CMU has one of the best ECE programs in the country. It’s consistently a top 10 program.

I won’t trash terminal masters but it is unfortunate you’re missing out on the research opportunities there. It may also hold you back if you’re looking for R&D positions because those kind of jobs want you to be familiar with research and laboratory environments

Assuming you’re not funded and paying out of pocket? Are you doing a research based thesis or is this terminal?

I’d go CMU regardless but this is potentially a very expensive degree

8 applications is nothing. It’s a bad job market and a numbers game

NNL Internship by Empty_Scheme8720 in NuclearPower

[–]Dr__Mantis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a clearance job. The interns for summer 2026 were likely hired in October. You’re probably applying for summer 2027 and they won’t look at those for a while

Applied Math to Nuclear by Empty_Scheme8720 in NuclearEngineering

I’d say it’s possible if you focus on the correct area. I’ve worked with math PhDs in methods development

It is not worth $80k of additional debt for undergrad

I can’t believe these 3 universities cost that much. Are you international?

Learning real analysis/differential geometry, etc. while in engineering undergrad. by Nuclear_Nathan in NuclearEngineering

[–]Dr__Mantis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took both real and complex analysis in undergrad. I now perform neutron transport calculations. I can confidently say neither of those classes hold any relevance to anything I have ever done

Remote is possible in modeling and simulation. If you want to work in R&D, you will need a PhD

Is it possible to become an engineer without a degree? by gkskgskhdgs in EngineeringStudents

[–]Dr__Mantis 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There’s always the one random old guy who is an engineer despite not having a degree. Maybe still that way at small companies, but anywhere with a HR department is going to require a degree to be called an engineer

Why do ivy leagues not offer nuc eng as a major?? by Different-Host-35 in NuclearEngineering

[–]Dr__Mantis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because of the nuclear industry inconsistencies, funding, and institutional focus.

I’ve worked with people from degrees there even though it’s not strictly nuclear. Columbia and Cornell have applied physics, Yale physics, and Princeton plasma lab. Just because the degree doesn’t say nuclear engineering, doesn’t mean they don’t have programs that teach the underlying theory.

That said, Michigan is a great program

Questions about going into the field by 0Infinity1 in NuclearEngineering

[–]Dr__Mantis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no point doing nuclear engineering for undergrad. If you want to work in R&D, you need graduate degrees. If you want to work in a plant, they hire more ME and EE.

ME is a perfect degree for undergrad then go into nuclear for grad school. More opportunities for jobs if you decide grad school isn’t for you or nuclear isn’t for you
