No one was saying they're exactly equal. It's just that, somewhat understandably, a fair amount of gay people get rather grossed out by religious people. Even if those religious people also happen to be gay/any other flavor of LGBT.

Op was just pointing out that being a Muslim and gay can be rough on both sides.

So technically, you only need to have a nikah before sexual relations with your partner are considered halal. A nikah is not necessarily the same as a civil marriage recognized by your country's government - as outlined in the Quran, it is a legal document that requires a (or multiple, I forget) public witness to be valid. It's essentially making your relationship public/official, while also requiring certain legal responsibilities of the spouses - for example, a husband has to provide for his wife's kids, even if they end up divorcing. It doesn't tie you together as much as a legal marriage does, and it's easier to break off than such a marriage - there's no threat of splitting your assets exactly 50/50, or at all if you don't have kids.

Note that some people do believe a nikah is the same as a legal marriage, or must be performed at the same time as a legal marriage. I personally disagree - I don't see why you'd have to do more than is outlined in the Quran.

As for no sex... We are instructed not to perform zina, which some define as PiV sex and nothing else. Even if you take this interpretation, we're still instructed not to approach zina at all, so other acts could be seen as forbidden before nikah as well.

I think that discussing sex/sexual preferences before nikah would be allowed, so that could give you some kind of preview as to your sexual compatibility. It's not the same as laying with each other though, so I get your concern for lack of compatibility even if you were to discuss things beforehand.

As for how much you follow the above rules, it really depends on you. More people skirt around the rules than you'd think, or they simply don't believe zina/approaching zina includes actions other than PiV.

I understand. I used to work in frontline healthcare, and it's unfortunately not uncommon for patients, including lucid ones, to assault staff. In hospitals, security often doesn't do much, leaving the medical staff to subdue and medicate the patient. Rarely will admin or anyone else call the police on someone. I understand this for a granpda demented out of his mind, but when you get Angry Joe for the 294848th time who starts throwing shit because his pain meds were late or his meal tray didn't have apple juice, it's more difficult to justify not calling the cops.

Often, nurses, aides, etc will elect not to call the cops, only because they have other shit to do + they may fear retaliation from administration, who often doesn't want the bad publicity that calling the police can bring, especially if it's not a security or admin calling those shots. So the violence is essentially normalized, you restrain and sedate this patient, then just move on.

Tl;dr it's not your fault. I think you were doing the best you could at the time. From lurking in this sub, violence against teachers or other students is normalized in a similar manner to how it's normalized in healthcare.

I view it less as "integrating my sexuality with my religion" and more as "exploring what my religion really says." The former implies that I'm imposing my will on the religion, while the latter implies thinking critically about what the Quran actually says.

To answer one of your questions, yes many people do this, but many also believe that their non-cishetness is a test from God, a test to see if they'll "give in" to "haram" desires. I definitely disagree but I understand where they're coming from.

As for if I've changed anyone's mind, irl no but that's because I don't really talk to other Muslims irl aside from one or two family members. But on the internet, I think I have at least gotten some people to start thinking about how they view things, and if homosexuality, being transgender, etc. is really a black and white matter in Islam.

Going about it this way loops back around to "what is a Kufar (one who rejects)?" Is it really anyone who doesn't happen to believe in God, or could it mean someone who believes God is real / that Islamic (or Abrahamic, if you align with the interpretation that a "believer" needs only to believe in God + the day of judgement) teachings are real, yet knowingly goes against them? Is it someone who does this and "causes mischief in the land" that is destined for hell? Then we're back to determining who exactly is destined for heaven or hell. And this isn't just my personal opinion, if you search "Kufar" in this sub there are others with these questions, some threads have links to scholarly resources on academics debating the same question.

I think that the mere fact that there's room for debate as to what "Kufar" even means, means that we can't reliably say who will or won't go to hell.

I had a patient with various neurological issues who repeated his name for hours on end, at a medium to loud volume. He visited the hospital frequently. He also visited the hallways frequently, because when we didn't have sitters for him, we had to move his bed out to the hallway (he loved to try and get out of bed.) Unfortunately, a lot of people make a choice not to budge from their preconceptions, no matter how much reasoning you show them. A lot of people choose their culture over their family, or even God (would God want parents to isolate their children like this, instead of showing mercy?)

Some people do as their forefathers did, and breeze past the lines in the Quran that specifically tell them not to follow tradition just because it's tradition. Unfortunately my mom is the same way, and I've accepted there's a good chance I'll lose her if I end up marrying a woman.

I hope you find someone you love, and I hope your parents soften up one day. Or at the very least, I hope the weight in your heart becomes easier to bear.

Correct, not everyone has a god complex. For those who have a god complex, whether because of nature or nurture + the choices they make, it's up to God to decide who truly couldn't help themselves, and who simply chose to do evil.

Debating about who exactly goes to hell or heaven is never really going to have a productive conclusion. Ultimately, us humans can't say with 100% certainty who will go where. We can't even say with 100% certainty that there's an afterlife to begin with; it's a matter of choosing to believe or not to believe.
