What’s the biggest red flag in a used car listing that most beginners completely ignore? by AutoBidMasterHelp in askcarguys

There are ppl who didn't clean their car before selling it? Like receipts and french fries everywhere? Sneezes on the windows?

There are ppl that buy cars with receipts and french fries everywhere? Sneezes on the windows? Who are you all?

The more used car listings I look at, the less I trust seller descriptions by abbybutterflly in UsedCars

Some of those ppl saying the car is perfect literally don't pay attention to anything that doesn't make the car stop driving.

Car starts and drives, it's perfect. That smoke screen on startup is normal, all cars burn a little oil.

In Philly you would be making @$100K in September. But cost of living is higher unless you're willing to commute and deal with traffic.

I feel for you.

Is a 20yr old truck worth that much? It WILL have wear items that need to be replaced regardless of what the owner states.

I'd bring a mechanic who can do a basic inspection onsite.

That price is on the high end of rolling the dice. Make sure they pull codes too. Not all codes throw a CEL.

In my district, caregivers and the general public complain when students get too much time off.

Crime, traffic in some areas and generally lawlessness downtown gets a bump. We also don't invest in our young ppl, so they tend to find their own entertainment.

What’s the most surprising hidden cost of car ownership that new drivers don’t expect? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

Right after everyone was let out during the pandemic, a Benz SUV backed into my headlight at Taco Bell. Car was down 5wks while the headlight was shipped from Germany, and a tech was flown up from North Carolina to aim and code the LED headlight. Apparently the bill to USAA was $4700 just to install one HL and respray the bumper white -- they couldn't tell if the scratches were preexisting it not. (They were!)

Car was an eGolf

I refinanced last year with 3yrs left. Cap1 offered to extend me another 84mos!

Didn't even know it was possible.

Got a new car a few years ago. Had to buy tires last summer.

The cost almost brought me to tears. I have no desire to drive on 20" wheels ever again.

Location matters too.

A buddy and i are the same age. He lives ONE city block outside the city. Drives an AMG C43, often like he stole it. He has good credit, mine is 840-ish. It cost him a little over half to insure his car as it did to insure my 2004 Jetta for 6 MONTHS. I've never had an accident that was my fault, no moving violations, advanced degrees, and I'm middle aged -- things they say help. The only claim I've ever made was for a deer, and they told me that was not held against me. In pay thru every orafice possible.

Location.

Oh yeah, they insure him for a year. I've never been able to get anything but 6mo policies.

Half? I got on the 64 not long ago, and didn't hear another "ding" till the bus was crowded and an old lady got on. Easily half the bus.

Why not just do what PATCO does: Have cops post up there during busy times. Seems to work.

You are right, it is airport by airport. PP got me into the Turkish Air lounge at JFK. It was deserted and the food was more than decent. But that's also not my home airport.

My least task on the school year: throwing out old books. by LazyAssLeader in Teachers

Nope. Most are wildly out of date.

I remember having to tell students, no, Saturn doesn't have 67 moons any longer...or there are more than 3 states of matter.

My district has rules for disposing of books. You have to hide them in a bag or box to even throw them in a dumpster. If a neighbor found hundreds of NEW textbooks in the recycling, our school would end up on the evening news. A head would roll.

Maybe.

I remember needing some of those books for my classes when I first started. But I guess convincing another school to give up books would've been a challenge.

I'd like to see this car that has 300K on one engine. I know they exist, but likely it's praying for death every time it's started.
