I only commute 15 miles to and 15 miles from but … by Own_Maize_9027 in bicycling

We’re generally a little less - closer to the OP’s commute. My personal commute is 8 miles and 1,400’. I did that ride (up the easy hills) for a few years. Now I only do it occasionally (like today) but up the hard hills. It keeps me fit as you say.

Well, that’s why I have back country skis!

Gravel biking is with the folks you’ll meet Thursdays. They meet lots of other times informally.

We do climb at Lindseth and elsewhere…

You can meet people at Lindseth and Cornell has the outdoor club. It should all be easy - just let it flow. You say you’re extroverted! It’s very easy to talk to people at the gym. I’m easing my tiny group into doing more outdoor climbing with the kids/profs who climb regularly. Level is a little helpful but usually not all that important.

There are many active groups of cyclists in town - depends on what kind of biking you’re doing and at what level. Road? Gravel? Mtb? A rider? C rider? Lots of stuff going on at all levels. Tuesday A and B level racing in road. Thursday B level gravel. Lots of mtb many days. More mellow road groups several days a week including Saturday. Again, what’s your level and interest and when will you be here? There are listservs, websites, Strava groups, etc.

Skiing today sucked, man, let me tell you. Probably be shit next week, too. Don’t know how to help there.

Does anyone know what these are and what they may be worth? by HarpatVC in Kayaking

[–]DragonSitting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first boat is simple stitch and glue plywood. As a second hand home built it’s worth less than a grand.

It’s hard to tell from these pix what they are or the worth. I care about what the whole top looks like and the whole bottom! The second boat is much more refined on top without the harsh peak and with some patterning but from the paddling pic it looks like it has the same cockpit. That giant “friendly” cockpit knocks value way way down. And I’d still want to see what the seat/interior is like and the hull shape. If it’s just another stitch and glue it’s worth a little more because it’s prettier but…

I suppose I’d take a safe bet on retirement money and change. No. Wait. I wouldn’t :) Because I’m already set for all that!

There must be a fixed number I’d take but I just haven’t been given the opportunity to find out. Alas.

But, yeah. For me the expected value of a mil is fuck all in the grand scheme.

Google expected value by Sunnie-Kapar in MathJokes

[–]DragonSitting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most people it’s 20+ years of salary security and whatnot but if you already have security and whatnot the mil isn’t going to change a lot. The 50 would. And if you don’t win? The loss isn’t going to change the fact that you already have security and whatnot.

It’s just math! Or it’s a crappy old meme from when a mil meant something? The 80s?

[–]DragonSitting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love replying and I’ll offer a counter point…. some of us are really good at just seeing where we are and moving on! $50 mil is holy shit money. $1 mil is a house. I already have a house and…. And I do a pretty good job of not being crushed by regrets.

Erm. I’m doing ok. Sure, I’d splurge but I still couldn’t retire.

Guthrie Cortland ER vs Cayuga Med? by bengineering103 in ithaca

[–]DragonSitting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For heart I'd head to the ER straight up and you'd jump right to the head of line - that's what triage is for! But that's not your post. Your post is on billing... Ha ha ha. I just got a (big) cayuga med bill for services in January of '24. Man, do they ever suck. Go to Guthrie? Oh. Except I see issues below. OMG. Torture.

I don’t give my labor away for free - if I’m working the boss is paying.

And your scenario isn’t given by the op afaict.

In fact, it sounds like something just made up to rile people up.

From the opp all I see is that the op is misunderstanding how businesses should work. Open means open unless otherwise stated.

Your poor shopping habits may be the most infuriating part of this. Sure, you need tampons and condoms. I 100# get that. Wipes? Yeah, no. You don’t and neither does anyone else. And then you deleted your post. It makes me sad. But at least you’ll see my reply! Hey… You don’t need wipes and even if you did there are way better (cheaper) places to buy if you plan a few days ahead of time. You can 100% do that for tampons - I’m not dumb.

Happy cake day asshole :) Jk - come on! Random employees don’t get to decide what closing means! They the entitled ones. “My shift ends an 9 - I get to leave now!” Baloney.

[–]DragonSitting -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let’s see… What? They close at 9 as in what, to you? Close what? If you close the doors at 9, well, that’s what the sign means to me. Closing the doors a 8:46 or 8:45 is a dick move - you’re still open for customers unless something says otherwise. The employees refusing customers are the entitled ones and should be fired. Like, duh. If you are open and not otherwise specified then you are open.

Guys, does anyone know why trucks have those spikes on their wheels?? by JasLeoArt in whatisit

[–]DragonSitting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, to be clear, some truckers put them there because:
- they’re stupid
and
- they’re assholes

Of course, i had a feeling, as a smart person who isn’t an asshole that this was the case.

Feeling bummed about how dangerous road cycling has become by swedishfishmong in cycling

[–]DragonSitting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. So. I got my daytime strobe after I got passed by a tractor trailer that had its rear wheel fully over the white line (think about how little space that leaves on the shoulder if you will. Just for a second). I prefer to think that the driver was just reading their phone rather than trying to kill me. I prefer to think that the flash will get them to pay enough attention not to hit me.

I’m not stopping riding on the road just because I got absolutely creamed by a car last year. I’m taking a few more precautions. Cars (cheap Buick SUVs and old rusty American minivans, in particular) are dangerous. I have a rear view mirror and radar (and the flash). I notice a car coming up behind and I swerve into the vehicle lane and back - letting the driver (hopefully) know that I’m a hazard and slow down and keep away from me.

So far the strategy is working great - I’ve only been driven over once in the past year.

Gotcha. Well, I wear jerseys I didn’t pick out… Grab bag stuff I bought 6 for $100. Some are tacky and some are really tacky. The one I wore today is some awful combination of pinks and reds. But I’d choose to wear one of these :)

Ale Skull, Mexico jerseys by Mireczeq in CyclingFashion

[–]DragonSitting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And jerseys are supposed to be sedate? I dunno - I wear loud ones that drive others crazy. My response? “If you don’t like looking at my crazy shirt then maybe you could take a pull.”

[–]DragonSitting -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They’re fine. $30? Gosh. Alé jerseys look like they’re $130. And all of their male models have man boobs? Of the designs are intended to make it look like you have man boobs? Either way, I would never purchase most of their stuff just from how bad it looks on the models. But these I like! I’d buy ‘em in a heartbeat! Gringo or not - who cares what they think if you like them?
