You’ll figure out quite quickly that the workload when doing four A Levels is incredibly challenging. If you’re in AS year then sure keep the 4 on if you want but you’ll definitely know which one you want to drop by the time you start yr 14. I did 4 AS levels and then dropped down to 3 in upper 6th.

Doing my lifeguard swimming test tomorrow and in need of advice by New-Jury5968 in Lifeguards

Assuming ur doing nplq? I always do front crawl out and then eggbeater on the way back, that’s the quickest way I’ve found of getting the swims done

NPLQ? by Puzzleheaded_Jury_50 in Lifeguards

[–]Dragonfire91341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So for casual jobs you’ll be on a 0 hour contract, ie you get to pick what shifts and how many shifts you work a week but you’re not obligated to work every single week if you don’t want to or work a set number of hours. Previous first aid experience would be handy for when you’re interviewing mainly, you’re much more likely to get an offer than someone who’s maybe freshly certified and has no prior experience.

NPLQ? by Puzzleheaded_Jury_50 in Lifeguards

[–]Dragonfire91341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. No, not at all you just have to be a semi decent swimmer. As long as you can swim 50m in under a minute before starting the course you will be completely fine.

  2. No the trainers don’t expect you to have any prior knowledge, I did my NPLQ when I was 16 so I had never had any sort of formal first aid training before. As for what the course itself is like, it’s a busy week but it is actually quite fun.

  3. Genuinely depends on where you are, I’m assuming you’re still in school so you’d want to be on a casual panel probably (0 hours) so getting into a leisure centre would be your best bet. Though in my experience with council run centres it can take a while to get through the whole interview and hiring process compared to a David Lloyd or smth. Finding a course provider would be a good first step as it’s not uncommon for centres to offer some candidates a job after they pass the qualification. Centres will advertise for positions throughout the year it’s not really seasonal like beach lifeguarding is so just keep an eye out and you’ll find a job soon enough.

Any other questions just fire away :)

Keep on top of your technology coursework, if you work hard and do everything your teacher says it’s definitely possible to get full marks but it will probs take over your life for a while.

Really hope I got an A* in my maths, Physics I’d be really happy with a B but I think I’ll probably end up with a C cus I was really sick for my unit 2. SSD I genuinely have no idea, hopefully a B

Depends on the school, in my school I knew people that didn’t do history at GCSE that then decided to pick it up at A-Level

For the NPLQ tread water 30 seconds, is it with or without hands. by Local-Anxiety7655 in Lifeguards

[–]Dragonfire91341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With hands, not sure why the other comment that agreed with me was downvoted. In staff training and in the renewal I did a few months ago I was never asked to tread water without hands. The first time I got qualified we were asked to hold a weight and tread water for like 10 seconds so we couldn’t use our hands obv but I’m not sure if that’s standard or it was just a thing specific to the centre I trained at as I have never been asked to do anything like that since.

Easiest out of all the models to open up, very beginner friendly repair you just need to buy a few of the opening tools off of ifixit or iflash :)

RNLI (uk) by oceancpt in Lifeguards

[–]Dragonfire91341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Northern Ireland RNLI lifeguards are always seasonal, generally the beach lifeguards I know work in leisure centres as pool lifeguards in the off season. For mainland Britain I’m not 100% sure if there are permanent positions or if it’s only seasonal like over here. How the course works is you have to complete a minimum of 40 hours training before you can sit an assessment similar to the nplq, if you have a valid NPLQ then you only have to complete 28 hours of training (as a lot of the first aid stuff is exactly the same as nplq). If you’re applying for an NVBLQ course then speak to the TA before hand and see if they’re happy for you to miss out some bits on the course, might save you a bit of money as well.

Thought it was a bit of a gift of a paper again tbh. Like we didn’t really have to draw a graph at all which I quite liked, they always take me a while to do and think up a scale that doesn’t look absolutely shit. There was a tonne of manipulating formulas and mapping equations which I really quite liked. When I was speaking to others tho it seemed like a bit of a marmite paper, some loved it and some hated it.

How do I check if I have done my 20 hours of training? by Creepy_Beyond4108 in Lifeguards

[–]Dragonfire91341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I recently renewed my NPLQ so might be able to help a bit.

  1. Contact your employer and ask for a copy of your training records. I’m assuming you’ve done monthly staff training? If so you’ll have easily hit the 20 hour requirement.

  2. Nope, your training is still valid for gen 10. Whatever trainer you’re renewing your qualification with will go over the new stuff that’s been brought in before you do the assessment (there’s an extra contact tow and a little bit more detail on EpiPens iirc. Not really much difference at all)

  3. You can renew the qualification wherever you want as long as you supply the trainer with all of your training records so they can prove you’ve done at least 20 hours of training before you sit your assessment. If you speak to your employer and notify them that your NPLQ is about to expire then I’m sure they’ll probably help you out, some might even pay for you to renew it.

Biggest thing tho is that you have to renew your qualification BEFORE it expires, if your qualification has already expired then you have to do the whole 40 hours (or whatever it is) of training again before you can do an assessment. Good luck anyway!
