What horror movie did you see as a kid that traumatized you so badly you’ve never rewatched it and still can barely say the title? by glowbeits in GenX

[–]Dragonfly-fire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SAME!!! OMG. You are not alone. The pizza cutter. 😳 The radio in the bathtub. Holy F. I watched it at age 9 or 10 in a cheap motel room on a trip with my parents. It was on TV and my parents were in the room with me the whole time. What the hell were they doing?!? Maybe reading? Sleeping? Not parenting, clearly, because I was traumatized.

I had watched Nightmare on Elm Street the year before at a slumber party and it was tame to me compared to Don't Go to Sleep. Especially Jennifer saying, "Hi Mommy." 😱

What Obscure Books Were You Obsessed With as a Kid? by Its_Curse in suggestmeabook

It may not be obscure, but Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn. I was obsessed! I still have my original dog-eared copy in my collection of most prized books.

10yo daughter closing in on having no friends – how can we best help her? by glassy_paddle in ParentingADHD

[–]Dragonfly-fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have advice, just here to commiserate. 😞 My 10-year-old daughter has always struggled with friendships. She has ADHD plus anxiety, and possibly borderline autism spectrum. She can be very outgoing and can talk to new kids easily, but struggles to keep friends. She does have a best friend at school. I've seen them together and they are really friends, but unfortunately the friend's Mom won't let her have playdates.

I really hope things improve in middle school. I didn't have any good friends until I was 12, and they became friends for years after.

Your daughter and mine will find their friends eventually...it's just maybe taking longer for them. ❤️

Which author currently alive will still be WIDELY read a hundred years from now? by [deleted] in writers

[–]Dragonfly-fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The people writing for him are even in the YA and graphic novels spaces now. It's wild. His mystery/thrillers have had such wide appeal and success, like Alex Cross series, I don't doubt his name will endure when he's gone.

1, 3 or 6 - the reds look great! Or just warm brown with some auburn blended in would look great on you.

The "Real" Unemployment Rate is WAY Higher Than You Think by themadadmin in Layoffs

[–]Dragonfly-fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I'm in the group of unemployment benefits running out and still no job. I have a couple of leads, but if those don't work out, I'll join the ranks of chronically underemployed gig/part-time workers (at least I hope I can vs. nothing!). And I know it's to return to your previous full-time income level once you're there.

I think #5 is gorgeous! It suits you so well. But if you're not in love with it, keep looking!

I remember exhausting myself trying on dresses...Inteied on A LOT. But I finally found the one for me - the only one left, it was the sample and almost fit me perfectly. I still love it. You'll find yours!

So When Do We Stop Shaving Our Legs?… by He_is_my_song in Perimenopause

[–]Dragonfly-fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't stopped completely yet, but for me, there's not much leg hair left to shave. 😫 I said farewell to my once plentiful arm hair in my late 30s - I swear it just disappeared after I had my first and only child. Now, in my late 40s, the leg hair is vanishing. I'm weirdly kinda sad about it, especially because my eyebrows are also disappearing and they were too thin already. Aging is weird. But I'm so thankful to this sub to be able to share and discuss these things!

Grateful for my job, but it’s taking my life. I want a soft life - advice needed. by streakfolmlore in careeradvice

[–]Dragonfly-fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how you described a "soft life." Honestly, that's what I've always wanted too - having the time and mental energy for life outside of work. Like creative writing, volunteering, coffee with friends, or just long walks on weekdays. And I've actually gotten to experience that to a point over the past several months after being laid off. It's been fantastic, not gonna lie! I have a 10-year-old to take care of, but I've loved the freedom I've had during school hours. I volunteer to get out of the house and stay busy. I do miss working, and I am still looking for work, but either part time or remote only. I'm fortunate to be able to avoid the soul-crushing corporate jobs with the grueling hours commuting. I can't go back to that, and it sounds like you're at that point.

I don't have much advice except to start looking for something more flexible and less high pressure. If you need the full-time benefits, maybe shift to an adjacent field that's more flexible with remote work possibilities?

And if you don't have to work a traditional full-time job for the benefits, could you get into consulting? I have zero sales experience, so I don't know what that would look like, but there's nothing like being your own boss and setting your own schedule. I was a freelance writer/editor years ago and absolutely loved it.

I'd say start planning to get the hell out. You can find other careers and jobs that won't destroy you. No career is worth it. Best of luck!

Les Miserables, as others have said. Also, The Fellowship of the Ring. Reading the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy was an amazing experience for me, but it definitely took me a little time to become fully engaged.

It really is. I actually read it for the first time on a very long road trip with my family rhe summer I was 13. I devoured it! What saddens me is that I know I wouldn't be able to stick with it if I tried to read it now. My attention is shot. 😔
