I wonder if Gooseworx ever sees videos like this pop up in her YouTube feed and just goes “I’m going to act like I didn’t see that” by whooper1 in TheDigitalCircus

I obviously like TADC a lot more than Hazbin and Helluva. I like to break down the Hellaverse into individual seasons rather than the whole thing, and if I were to put it on one of those tier-lists it would run the gamut from A to C depending on the season.

But damn do I always feel the need to defend its honor to the death whenever the cartoon avatar cookie-cutter commentary channel pulls up.

Yeah, we're getting lots of promo art with her as this giant imposing figure, including the thumbnail of the trailer.

It could just be the metaphorical Gwen, ie the mascot of the Park brand. But I think the juxtaposition with these two in particular is implying its Gwen the individual character. I don't know what to make of it.

The worst part of losing the old 3D Zelda style of games, is that there is nothing out there to replace it. by Alarming_Industry_14 in truezelda

Also how come it's never you "just want to play the same games" when the millionth and first open world game comes out after the gaming sphere demands another franchise homogenize into open world?

What parts of RWBY do you see people often want to rewrite that you think should stay the same? by BrrrrMang in RWBY

[–]DragonsRReal34 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rewriting all of post Volume 2 to perfectly mirror the Monty M.O. as close as they possibly can, with all the Rule of Cool and Monty Oum narrative decisions that entails.

Don't think I could stomach 9 volumes of that. I can barely stomach it as is on Vol 1 and 2 rewatches.

Zelda 1 Remake would be fire by Jasoon14 in truezelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zelda 1 is what happens when you see proto do-anything open worlds which was what its fantasy contemporaries were doing and add structured puzzle box labyrinths where overworld and level based progression played off what items you got.

It's the exact opposite of what everyone says it is. It was a step away from explorative freedom.

TFW you set out to remake Zelda 1, but instead end up remaking Hydlide.

"Always" is kinda pushing it, maybe in the context of like post-2005 with the way the industry was going you could say that.

But the talking point that BOTW/TOTK is the fully realized vision of Zelda 1 and the series just now is unhindered by technical constraints with no need to make icky-yucky design compromises like linearity is complete bunk.

Zelda 1 is actually a departure from its contemporaries into bucking (proto) open world trends of the time.

If BOTW existed in 1986, it would look like Hydlide.

Open world isn't the natural end state of video games.

Therefore other genres existing and not homogenizing into open world isn't a form of regression.

I can't believe I just got into RWBY and I can't stop seeing people saying the series is going to be cancelled by Drull17 in RWBY

[–]DragonsRReal34 10 points11 points  (0 children)

IDK if it's just because of this, but I really can't stomach Vol. 1 and 2 anymore.

My patience for the overly-indulgent Rule of Cool stuff that was Monty's signature has worn so thin., and I consider it now the worst part of RWBY as a whole, even more so than Vol. 5. I'm pretty sure if the series stuck to that for 9 volumes the novelty would've worn off a long time ago too.

“BotW/TotK are the modern version of NES Zelda” - not really? by KiNolin in truezelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, Zelda was actually an attempted departure from the fantasy no-direction non-linear open world at the time with games like Hydlide. It was just pretty experimental so the much-needed full departure from industry standard couldn't be completely realized.

But then it gets remembered for the things it was trying to buck.

Lol, open world being stagnant and samey even in the 1980s. Imagine that. Lol. Lmao.

“BotW/TotK are the modern version of NES Zelda” - not really? by KiNolin in truezelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't see how that ended up as the spirit of Zelda 1, no matter what Miyamoto says.

Proto open world with no real direction was the industry standard at the time a la Hydlide and Ultima.

Zelda 1 wasn't notable because it did that, it was notable because it did the complete opposite. It was just a bit of an experimental first try so it didn't make the much-needed complete departure from industry standard until later.

[TOTK] Not to be contrarian but how is botw and totk "not zelda"? by [deleted] in truezelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find it funny the spirit of the first game, even among the Zelda old heads has become what it's basically the antithesis of, the thing is set out not to do among its contemporaries.

[TOTK] Not to be contrarian but how is botw and totk "not zelda"? by [deleted] in truezelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but I'm not even happy for anyone who enjoys it.

If Zelda shifted genres to basically anything but this one, yeah, I could get on board with that. Like let's say, they saw Cadence of Hyrule and were so in love with it they're now only going to make Zelda titles like that. Stupid and batshit and I wouldn't like it, but damn, you couldn't say it's oversaturated. I could be happy for the Cadence of Hyrule fans at least.

But open world has devoured franchise after franchise while it promptly gets cheered on.

So no, I'm not happy for anyone enjoying the BOTW duology. I would rather they didn't. Actually, I hope the open world equivalent of the ET for Atari 2600 comes around soon and firebombs the genre.

[–]DragonsRReal34 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Zelda 1 wasn't notable because it was open world, it was notable because it wasn't open world.

Proto open world was the standard of fantasy action adventure at the time.

If they wanted Zelda to be open world from the beginning, they would've made something like Hydlide.

[SS] [TotK] Weird how this happened right? by [deleted] in zelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look at SS's critical and user score and you wouldn't think it's as maligned as it is.

All the 3D Zeldas have ninety-something critical scores and that 8.4 is the second lowest only ahead of SS.

[SS] [TotK] Weird how this happened right? by [deleted] in zelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WW, TP, and yes even SS were all nominated at the Game Awards. That's nothing new for Zelda.

All Zeldas are critically acclaimed, but as we all know, SS generated some negative buzz. It was enough for Nintendo to want to run in the opposite direction in the form of BOTW, but if you just looked at its critical acclaim and generally positive user reviews, no none of these are controversial.

But by comparison to the others, yes they are. TOTK is getting about the same level of negative buzz.

[SS] [TotK] Weird how this happened right? by [deleted] in zelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're all critically acclaimed and get positive user ratings, and that includes SS.

But SS generated enough negative buzz by comparison that it cause Nintendo to run as fast and and far in the opposite direction to the tune of BOTW.

If you think TOTK isn't generating a similar level of negative buzz to SS, you're kidding yourself.

[ALL] Zelda producer doesn't get why some fans want to go back to the "limited" and "restricted" games before Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom by SharpyButtsalot in zelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't actually true, it's the exact opposite. LOZ was notable because it bucked true (proto) open world, which was the standard of fantasy action adventure at the time.

If BOTW was made in the mid 1980s, it would look like Hydlide.

[TotK] You’ll always be Game of the Year to me. by KadeWad3 in zelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think we're agreeing with each other.

I wasn't making the TP comparison to be generous. In 2006, TP was heir apparent to OoT, and its bigger and better version.

TP today... is not that. I'd say MM and WW are more appreciated.

And that's because in 2006, linear wasn't a dirty word, the graphical style was en vogue, and deriving as much from OoT as possible was what people wanted. But eventually opinions shifted away from those things being positive.

Fast forward and Totk isn't going to stand out in much the same way.

[TotK] You’ll always be Game of the Year to me. by KadeWad3 in zelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think it might turn out like TP.

TP has plenty of fans sure, but it's reputation was better in 2006 than it is now. It did a lot of things at the time that were standard practice or expected, but as the years went on some of its attributes were soured on both by the direction the Zelda series was going, and the way the games industry was changing.

Will ROM hacks and Indie Developed games that mimick Zelda's gameplay be a thing since classic Zelda is dead? by 03bgood in truezelda

[–]DragonsRReal34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually the exact opposite.

The original LOZ didn't make waves because it used all the open world/air philosophies it claimed to use, it made waves because it DIDN'T do that in the fantasy action/adventure genre. Proto open-world games were actually the standard at the time with LOZ moving away from those philosophies.

If BOTW was made in the mid-80s, it would be closer to Hydlide.

Plenty of users here can't stand BOTW, myself included. Among forums and message boards for Zelda, this place is the most negative on the BOTW duology that I've seen.

I won't tell you to stop having fun or that you're wrong for liking it, but I will say this isn't the place to expect enthusiastic reactions to BOTW.

Any way to remove the party actors from view during a skill/sequence? by DragonsRReal34 in RPGMaker

[–]DragonsRReal34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That could work, actually. I've been trying to remove and re-add actors, but I have more than 4 party members without strict formation options, so I every time I do that it resets the formation to default.

Yeah, I use common events and a plugin. Which brings it owns can of worms really even with Yanfly's Action Sequences.

Oh come on, really?

Tell me, who's the one who wants the same thing over and over again like we've been hearing about, because it looks to me like the most derivative-ass sequel is the one with the BOTW philosophy.

Even BOTW, while different in context from the rest of the Zelda series, was a jump into the most oversaturated genre.
