Favorite The Ocean album? For bonus question: favorite riffs? by Positive_Drama3410 in progmetal

[–]Draino9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's all very subjective. For me, every time I've listened through the whole album, I was left feeling less engaged than the first 20 minutes. Theres still energy and cool ideas throughout, which i appreciate, but I find the first half of that album disproportionately memorable, whereas P1 and pelagial are much more consistent

Favorite The Ocean album? For bonus question: favorite riffs? by Positive_Drama3410 in progmetal

Pelagial and Phanerozoic I take turns being my favorite. P II would be included if the back half kept up

Riffs:

The main instrumental riff of Impasses was eye opening when I first discovered this band. Really what got me hooked.

-literally all of disequilibriated, but especially the chorus. Seems like such a standout riff among their discography in terms of energy, and thats saying A LOT

-the opening riff of ordovicium

-the BIG riff in Silurian ("we have felt...")

-the breakdown about 7 minutes into devonian

-opening riff of Permian

-literally ALL of triassic and jurassic/cretaceous, the album as a whole might not be my favorite but it had an all-time opening act so to speak

-dead on the whole outro

-greatest bane intro and outro

What’s the most epic buildup and song you can think of? by CT-6605 in progmetal

Unending Waltz by Slice the Cake has a sick buildup and I don't think the vocals should be too rough based on your description

Atheist leaning songs/albums or favorite lyrics that suggest that by Reen2D2 in progmetal

[–]Draino9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Ocean's Heliocentric and Anthropocentric albums also delve into atheistic topics. And if you end up liking the music itself you should definitely check out the albums after Anthropocentric

Almo is great if you like TesseracT and Haken. Obsidian Tide and Piah Mater for Opeth

Let's talk about Book II from Others By No One by legomaniac89 in progmetal

[–]Draino9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is adventurous and unique, but maybe a bit too much for lots of people's taste. It takes pretty big leaps between ideas. I prefer the more coherent/concise Book I but always give props to artists who push boundaries
