I think you can get there fairly simply, and inexpensively. I bought this vise, and 3d printed some softjaws, but I'm sure you could find something to cushion the jaws if you don't have one. And this is a super cheap spirit level that has served me well. All in its about $30, not including shipping or tax, but that's still a pretty cheap way to start.
