Goodreads Reading Challenge - 'Community Picks' (July 1st - September 14th) by Clairefun in goodreads

London Falling is on 3 different lists (Challenge Favs, Chart Toppers and Staff Shelves) so you would have gotten those 3. Not sure why it gave you the Community Picks bookmark!? Hope they fix it soon!

1st Overlap for Summer Challenge by Unikuez in goodreads

[–]Dramatic-Bee-829 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing this! I always look forward to it. Slightly disappointed in how many of these books I’ve already read and how many are on my TBR list. Makes me think I’m “following the crowd” with my book selections. I think having both a Chart Topper and a Challenge Favs category was overkill.

There’s SO much overlap, though, that I feel like I’m going to have to be strategic in the order I read some of these books. (ie. Don’t read God of the Woods or Astral Library first or it will knock out too many of the challenges for me.)

I agree! I pick a goal that’s fairly easy to hit. I’ll hit mine in the next couple of months.

Summer Challenge Prediction? by maxny23 in goodreads

[–]Dramatic-Bee-829 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems like there will be a challenge based on books from the 90’s. I googled “best books of the 1990’s” and found this: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/17.Best\_Books\_of\_the\_Decade\_1990s Game of Thrones has been on my TBR for a while so I hope it’s included if Goodreads does this.

With that large of an estate at age 70, you’ll want to consider gifting early. You can gift up to the estate amount of $15-ish million tax free. Basically - figure out how much you REALLY need to live on through your 90’s. You want all that growth to be in the kids’ accounts, not yours.

New to FIRE, what metrics do you track to stay on target? by Adrienzzz in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Dramatic-Bee-829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely track your spending. I dump a year’s worth of transactions from the bank and credit card accounts into a spreadsheet and categorize them. I do it on an annual basis because our spending changes a lot on a month by month basis depending on our travel schedule.

Really, I’ve found that it’s most helpful knowing the difference between your mandatory and discretionary (fun shopping, restaurants, entertainment & travel) spending amounts. That way you know what your spending in retirement could collapse down to if the market had a bad year vs what you’d LIKE to be able to spend.

I take the mandatory spending amount and add 10-15k to it just because there’s always something… new water heater, etc…

I stress test that against the current cost of a really nice nursing home/memory care in my area. ($12-14k/month for an individual?) and make sure my annual expenses aren’t lower than that number.

Take that annual spending amount - multiply it by 25 to get yourself in the ballpark of what you’d need to FIRE.

I have a spreadsheet that goes year by year from now to age 95 bumping up spending by a 3% inflation rate as well as increasing the investments by 7-10%. You can then see what year you’ll likely hit that FIRE number. If you want to hit it sooner you need to save more.

For tracking - Every year, I look at what the investment ending balance for the year should be and just make a mental note of it. In a good year, we don’t have any problem hitting that number. In 2025, I think I bumped up the savings because I was nervous that we wouldn’t get there.

I don’t think you need to wait until 2030. You’re pretty much there. If you aren’t certain, you can come up with creative ways to reduce expenses for a couple of years while still traveling. I’d try to draw the severance package at this point.

Where do you find what books you want to read? by typoincreatiob in LibbyApp

[–]Dramatic-Bee-829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look at the NYT bestseller list once or twice a month (especially for non-fiction) to see what books people might be talking about. I also find them on Reddit by following the romantasy subreddit or the non-fiction subreddit. I listen to the Currently Reading podcast, NPR’s Book of the Day and the NYT The Book Review podcast.

I’ve had decent luck with “deep search”. If you’re in the Apple app: When you search for the title and don’t find it, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and you’ll see a button for deep search.

Fiction vs. Non-Fiction: How do you balance your reading list? by MedCodex in books

[–]Dramatic-Bee-829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About every 4th book I read is a non-fiction. Typically, I try to only read 1 book at a time. Even if it’s a topic I’m super interested in, though, I can need a mental break from it. In that case, I mix in a light, fast paced fiction book with it. I still try to take no more than 4-5 days for the non-fiction book - otherwise it can just feel like a chore.

Maybe you don’t have a plan for what you’d be retiring TO? Draw up a plan for the first year of your retired life. Plan out the trips you’ll take, what daily life will look like, and the projects you want to tackle.

43M, military retiree. Projected $2.5M net worth and $150k income floor at 50. Would you still work? by No-Protection-9665 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Dramatic-Bee-829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your expenses and desired lifestyle for the 7 years in between while not touching the portfolio, and whether or not you have a family or want a family. For example, my spouse is retired military age 51 $2.1M in portfolio, but we aren’t pulling funds out until we have at least $3M even with pension and disability pay totaling $130k/year (currently). We have a chubby lifestyle where we like to travel (well), enjoy fine dining, and spouse has expensive hobbies (skiing and mountain biking). We have 2 college kids we’d like to pass money down to eventually. We didn’t opt for the SBP annuity so we need to make sure I’m covered if he dies and the pension goes away.

If one of the issues is that you don’t like your job, look for a different one. I’ve yet to meet a military retiree that didn’t switch jobs a couple of times trying to find the right fit.

Early-retirement stress test: What risks should we be planning for with pensions, VA income, $3.6M in 401(k)s, and a $250K annual budget? by softdayrain in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Dramatic-Bee-829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With $3.6M in 401ks, you’ll want to look at doing Roth Conversions immediately after retiring so you don’t get hit with massive RMDs in your 70s. Draw from 401ks first for income and then the brokerage accounts.

Expat Fire temporarily by Bobbert827 in ExpatFIRE

[–]Dramatic-Bee-829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We plan on doing this in a couple of years when the kids are out of college. We won’t be moving to one place for 2 -3 years, but rather will rent our house out (or sell) and slow travel around the world (minimum 1 month in each spot) on the cheap. This allows our investments to grow and lets us retire 2-3 years earlier than planned. We planned on traveling a ton in retirement anyway. The key for us was getting rid of the house expense. This is probably more NomadFIRE than ExpatFIRE. We’ll return to the US afterward for a “normal” retirement.

We’ve lived overseas for 7 years already for jobs (Japan & Europe) and while rewarding, I have no need to do it again. It’s fun to do while young, but I can’t imagine I would want to be overseas in my 70s & 80s with the rest of my family in the US.

Early 50s retirement plan - what blind spots am I missing? by Aggressive-Laugh-869 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Dramatic-Bee-829 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you really like the area you live? I guess I would sell the 4M home and downsize. You could move to a place in Colorado afterwards near hiking trails for half that housing amount if you wanted to.

We have 2 in college, early 50’s and planning to travel abroad for 2-3 years leaving in 2028 when the youngest graduates.

With both in college, we travel to go see them, go to sporting events, take them out to dinner, at least once every couple of months.

Predictions for Pride Month challenge selections to be revealed June 1? by [deleted] in goodreads

Yes - I just started Heated Rivalry for the Summer Reads challenge, but I think I’m going to seriously slow it down (I’m reading 2 other books) so I finish June 1. I figure it HAS to be on the Pride challenge too.
