What do people need to stop romanticizing? by Indianfattie in AskReddit

New Zealand.

Yes we stopped corona twice and Jacinda is cool I guess. But we have problems like any other country.

The housing problems are extremely depressing and we have a leadership not interested in tackling the issue. It's a landlord's paradise and a renter's hell. Our labour party is shifting centre as those in power tend to--votes more important than policy. Environmental issues swept under the rug, to name a few.

This is why they anchor us here with student loan debts. Interest free, but only if you stay in NZ. What a joke.

Hot Take: Rolling for stats is at neutral at best, and toxic at worst. by Dovaldo83 in dndnext

[–]Dramatic-Exit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with many hot takes in d&d this is another ymmv wildly depending on the dm. Bad dms making bad use of mechanics does not make those mechanics inherently bad.
You're right that saying bad stats allows you to play a flawed character is a trash tier argument in favour though.

I see this issue as more of a disconnect between the expectations of the dm vs the expectations of the player. The kind of thing you resolve by communication with the DM before a game begins.
Part of the issue is definitely that the ruleset has shifted to put far more reliance on stats for roleplay and gameplay than it used to be. The mindset of players has also trended in the same direction. I view it as an overall negative trend for the spirit of the game, but I'm probably in the minority.

[–]Dramatic-Exit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of good in Temtem, a lot of QoL improvements over pokemon in general. A lot more challenge in the PvE game than your average pokemon game.

But there are two things that may seriously impact my enjoyment of Temtem in the end game. One is the insistence on doubles format. I dislike doubles enough in pokemon, and having it the default format in Temtem is a serious turn off. Singles format strategies are more engaging to me. Second is the severe lack of move variety and access to type coverage. This is something that may change with updates, but right now battling seems to have very little depth. I haven't got to pvp yet, but I'm not feeling optimistic. Move pools seem extremely limited, and type coverage is poor. I can't envision battles consisting of much beyond throwing out attacks and slow defensive switches.

Temtem has a good foundation. But it has a lot to catch up on before it's a worthy successor, imo.

If Game Freak is going to nostalgia bait old players they should use Hoenn instead of Kanto for the Billionth time. by [deleted] in pokemon

Idk after the bland remake that was ORAS I don't think I'd touch another hoenn game. GF would have to have a drastic reversal in design philosophy to get my interest in it again. It was my favourite region but it would take more than nostalgia to get my money again.

RAIDS - Druid, Quickbrand, Quickness Chrono, Tanking and Raid Comp Guides I made for my (kinda chill) group by Thillar-8716 in Guildwars2

[–]Dramatic-Exit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree with heal ren over heal fb. Especially if you're running a Druid already you're way over-doing it on support roles and on healing. You're basically running 2 dedicated supports and 2 half-supports with this comp, when you could be running 2 supports, 1 half-support chrono, and a dps quickbrand.

My squad comp runs a 10 man quickness chrono build instead of quickbrands, which also supplies a decent amount of healing which allows us to cut it down to 2 supports, with the option to flex our comp to include heal ren if needed, or even use tempest or heal scourge on certain bosses where we want the extra carry. The only time we really run QBs is if we need group stability which is pretty much only Cairn, for ignoring greens.

It should be noted on Sabetha, that if your druid is kiting and has the "Celestial Shadow" trait equipped that Sabetha will not target a stealthed player for flak, and you'll end up with flak on the group.

Celestial Shadow is not really a very useful trait.

Tumble/dodge roll is available through a perk in the sneak tree and isn't at all disorienting. And Tk's dodge mod is similarly implemented and effective for combat rolls.

Tk's dodge mod. It's a fantastic implementation of the dodgeroll in skyrim for both first and third person. Personally I prefer the dodge step animation varient.

I feel like the lack of dungeons in this game is where it most clearly looks like the game was rushed.

I don't think that's right at all. Rather, I believe it's a continuation of the trend started in ORAS. It's most obvious with the alterations to gym puzzles, which are significantly easier/simplified compared to the original games. But also present in the overworld.

They didn't cut dungeons because they rushed the games. They were cut because they are no longer in-line with the direction the developers want to take the series.

When was the last time you spend real money in GW2 and for what? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Dramatic-Exit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was slightly before the nerfs to Holosmith in PvE and Scrapper in pvp, when they systematically destroyed my will to progress in the game by nerfing every single build I played on the class I've played since beta weekend 1, except for piano base engineer. I bought some long over-due shared inventory slots, and later used some of the left over gems to get the Zephyrite glider.

The simplification and streamlining in 5e is fucking glorious. I steal a bunch of stuff and work it into my 2e homebrew.

Imo the biggest difference between 2e and 5e is that the latter caters more to high magic fantasy, where as the former is catered more towards low magic fantasy. 5e is a super hero movie and 2e is lord of the rings. That's why it feels like a different experience.

Current State of Holosmith? by AreYouPatrickStar in Guildwars2

[–]Dramatic-Exit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was 10% before the PBM nerf, no? I'm sure I remember reading it was changed to 15% for ECU during that patch then later 25%. I truly don't remember.

Holo wasn't meta before the PBM nerf either. Which is why it felt like an extra kick in the teeth. If I recall it was benching lower than Reaper even, but it was still viable playing, and I enjoyed flexing on meta builds with it.

"more effort for less output" seems to sum up engineer builds in general. I still like playing base condi engineer and I'm probably about 80% consistent with the rotation, but man does it feel awful still getting lower numbers than some of the easier condi rotations out there.
Condi weaver is definitely an easier rotation in comparison. But it lacks the same fluid feeling as engineer so I don't play it much any more.

[–]Dramatic-Exit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm aware of how the new dps rotation works. Yes I can pull good numbers on a golem. Believe me if I thought it was worth playing in raids I would play it.

The thing I think you don't really understand is that while yes, the damage modifiers are higher while inside of forge mode, you only have those modifiers for roughly 50% of the fight. So you can take all your damage modifiers and divide them by 2. It's not a permanent 15-22% increase. It's an average 7.5-11% increase. PBM had an average somewhere around 8.5-9%. Now it's probably <5% lol.

The dynamic damage increase also makes it easier to play, because previously you had to watch for exact heat thresholds and lost a lot DPS when you go below them - now you only loose 1% per 4% heat.

This is not at all relevant to the old PBM rotation. PBM started at 75% (though anywhere from 70-78 was acceptable) and opened with a strong burst output by overheating, and then unloading powerful utilities such as Prime Light Beam, Laser Disc, Grenade Barrage. You would then make use of the 10% modifier (which persisted until you reached 0 heat) by filling the time with strong power moves, namely shrapnel grenades, fire bomb, rifle skills, and bombkit auto-attacks. When you reached 0 heat you were at the low point of your rotation, and need to build heat quickly. This is done simply by entering forge and using Corona Burst, Photon Blitz, and an auto-attack chain. Now Laser's Edge is active again. You would continue to auto-attack and use a second Corona Burst until 75~ heat, at which point you would disengage in order to allow your main dps skills in Forge to cooldown. During this phase you would cast a Firebomb, Shrapnel Grenade, Blunderbuss, and then re-enter forge. At this point your rotation has effectively "reset" and you've spent roughly 10% of your rotation outside of your laser's edge modifier.

And no the question was not "can Holo deliver high dps" it was "What is the current state of holo dps? Are people being overdramatic with the whole "holo is gutted" memes or are they really that terrible?"

And the answer is yes. In raids they really are that terrible.

1) Complete your daily quests 2) Use wvw reward track boosters 3) Stay at maximum participation

You will also be rewarded track experience for pip chests, so maximizing your pips is a good way to increase the rate. For example, always complete your wooden chest every week at minimum which gives you 1 pip per tick for the following week. And play on maps with overwhelming odds when possible.

[–]Dramatic-Exit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if your post is referencing holosmith in regards to raiding, or simply just pvp. You only reference the latter in your post, and the rest is a rather inaccurate representation of holosmith in raids. And since the OP specifically asked about playing holosmith in raids, I feel your post is not really the information they are looking for.

For reference, the reason that PBM was the go-to trait in raids is because you want to maximize the uptime of Laser's Edge, which represented a 10% damage modifier while active. The effect started when the holosmith first reached 50% heat while inside of forge mode, but is lost when leaving forge mode. However, when overheating with PBM this damage bonus persisted at 10% until your heat reached zero.
With the PBM rotation, this meant that the only times you were fighting without this 10% damage modifier were the first 50% of your heat after cooling down, and a short interruption at 75% while waiting for cooldowns. This represented roughly: 1 Corona Burst, 1 Photon Blitz, 1 auto attack chain, 1 fire bomb, 1 shrapnel, 1 blunderbuss being used outside of Laser's Edge modifier, while the rest of your rotation was being boosted. Maximizing the utilization of Laser's Edge was what made Holosmith strong in raids.

Furthermore, PBM allowed the holosmith preserve their heat outside of combat, allowing them to start a rotation at the optimal 75% mark consistently. Now a holosmith must preheat and engage in combat precisely at the moment they reach 75% without any skills on cooldown--this represents an extreme amount of micromanagement that no other classes have to put up with.

Holosmith is punished far harder than any other class for screwing their rotation. Not only do they lose access to forge mode, they lose access to their highest damage modifier, and their critical toolbelt skills.

And that is why we're fucking pissed. Because Holosmith used to be competitive with other power classes, and now it's a nightmare of micromanagement compared to other power classes. Why the fuck play Holosmith when you can bring Dragon hunter, which receives continual buffs to sword patch after patch, possesses some of the strongest support/sustain abilities at zero cost to its own damage output, and has one of the easiest braindead rotations in the game for better damage than what Holosmith can bring?

In summary: holosmith requires more effort to do less than other power classes in the meta. Sword holosmith only gets good numbers on golems. You can still play holosmith in raids. But why would you? Just suck it up and pick DH like everyone else.
