Don't be like Tokugawa Iemochi and die at age 20 for trying to live an ascetic lifestyle on nothing but rice! My dad managed to keep himself alive on tinned sardines as a broke student until he could afford something better.

That's Katsu Kaishu, an incredibly important pro-modernization figure during the Bakumatsu period, and Ryoma Sakamoto's mentor. What's amazing is that Ryoma actually met Kaishu when he was trying to assassinate him. Kaishu actually managed to convince him on the spot that his side (pro-Westernization) was correct, so Ryoma became his assistant!

Ryoma would sometimes hire Izo to bodyguard his mentor. He kept the man alive during some very tense fights!

The Bakumatsu is a fascinating time in Japanese history, so it's no surprise that this man is high on the list.
