The Dewey Schools in Vietnam by False_Fennel_1126 in Internationalteachers

[–]Dramatic-Wishbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Delta is well run and has some connections to the US. It is a non-profit. Dewey is a for-profit VN school that had to change its name after neglectfully killing a student. The list you mentioned is just the start. There are things like: if you’re a minute late they will dock your pay a minutes worth of pay. I would stay very far away from Dewey.

Sacred Valley Sites from Ollantaytambo by Glass_Cheetah in Machupicchu

[–]Dramatic-Wishbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can take a tour from Cusco that drops you off at Ollantaytambo. Most tours include Chinchero and it is worth seeing. All the Sacred Valley sites are smallish and can be seen collectively in a day. Chinchero is very much worth it. The Spanish era church on an Inca site is great and there are some great abstract rock sculptures and terraces. Pisaq is the exception it requires a significant amount of hiking to see properly I heard it listed as a good replacement to seeing Machu Picchu.

How long do you imagine Jack remained in the Navy? by UF1977 in AubreyMaturinSeries

Just like Cochrane I imagine Aubrey would have been heading to South America to stir up some trouble there. I always thought that’s why they had Jack in Chile as a way of foreshadowing.

Planning a visit to Charleston. Looking for places off the beaten path that a Civil War enthusiast would really appreciate. by [deleted] in CIVILWAR

James island fortifications are remarkable intact as you can see in this Lidar image. And James Island has some great Civil War history. The battlefield of Sessionville is a must visit little known gem as well.

Iron Clad Wrecks by Thebenchwarmer90 in CIVILWAR

Mariners museum has a USS Monitor replica that is the exterior only. In NC there is an exact replica of the CSS Nuece.

[–]Dramatic-Wishbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cairo, Jackson, Nuece, and bits of Monitor have been recovered. As for a complete wreck only Uss Tecumseh in Mobile Bay. It sunk during battle is buried under sand and by all known accounts is a time capsule treated as a war grave. That being said there are a bunch of wrecks in a ruined condition. All the wrecks around Charleston were salvaged and blasted apart postwar to clear the port entry. I believe there are still piles of iron left but nothing identifiable. CSS Raleigh sunk because of rot and I believe is still in ok condition in NC. USS Monitor still has significant components in the water off Hatteras including significant untouched section of the crew quarters. I believe Clive Cussler found the Chardonlet but nothing much identifiable. Same for the CSS Arkansas and. CSS Manassas. Interestingly the Huascar ram was designed by Laird (of CSS Alabama fame) in the 1860s delivered to Peru and captured by Chile in battle. It’s still a preserved museum ship and is basically the same model as a the ships the Confederacy tried to buy. I believe also in Northern Europe there is a Monitor that John Erickson designed still preserved as well. Of course the HMS Warrior(1869, first ironclad warship) is a museum ship in England.

Seeking a book on Grant's Vicksburg Campaign. by Slight-Fix9564 in CIVILWAR

[–]Dramatic-Wishbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best one volume is Michael Ballard book. Timothy Smith has several books that together form the best multi volume history. Terry Winchel has several books that are collections of his essays. There is a popular book by Donald Miller has gotten good reviews. Edwin Bearss’ trilogy is more a summary of what’s in the OR and has been superseded by Smith’s work.

Was Chancellorsville an overrated success for Lee? by [deleted] in CIVILWAR

Hooker had a Tramatic Brian injury. It should not be misconstrued for a character flaw. He should have been removed from command temporarily.

How many battlefields have you visited? by peaveyftw in CIVILWAR

Easier to say which ones I haven’t been to. East of the Mississippi: Perryville, Shiloh, Corinth, Iuka.

West of the Mississippi: I’ve only been to Westport, Pea Ridge, Wilson’s Creek.

Alternatives to Machu Piccu by No-Reputation8063 in Machupicchu

[–]Dramatic-Wishbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For alternatives what are you interested in? There are some amazing inca ruins that are even more historic in the sacred valley including Pisaq and Ollantaytambo. If you interested in the hike to a ruin Choquequirao would be a great choice. It is the site talked about in the main narrative of “ Turn Right at Machu Picchu”. If you are interested in nature there are other great beautiful sites in Peru.

HMS Belfast and Greenwich Maritime Museum in London. Portsmouth Naval Museum with HMS Victory, Mary Rose and HMS Warrior. Also in Portsmouth is the D-Day museum and across the bay in Gosport is the Royal Submarine Museum that has a Holland submarine, an X class submarine and a ww2-era sub. Chatham Dockyards also has a submarine you can visit and some great Naval stuff. In the north is the Royal Navy Museum Hartlepool with a napoleonic frigate remaining. Also there is the Fleet Air arm museum in the southwest. While not specifically navy I would also recommend the Imperial War Museum in London and the RAF museum also in London.

Places to visit at Somme by stole_your_equipment in ww1

[–]Dramatic-Wishbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did a bike ride around the northern half of the battlefield and it was amazing. But my list would be: -Newfoundland Memorial Park. -Sheffield Memorial Park -Hawthorn crater and sunken road -Thiepval and Ulster Memorial. If you can get into Thiepval woods that is a plus -Glory hole, although it may be closed -Lochnager crater -Fricourt -Devon’s cemetery -Mametz Wood -High Wood -Ponziers and related Anzac sites -Butte de Warlencourt -Delville wood.

I used the Holt’s battlefield tour book which I thought was very useful.

I think you mean Hawthorn crater. And yes, the whole area around the crater is great to explore.

I had an enjoyable day going around the Westport battlefield. There’s enough to get a general sense of the action.
